View Full Version : Can't save for shizzle!

Man, I am completely incapable of saving money! It like I get a decent paycheck for my cost of living, and I still drain my account before the next check comes in! Partying at the bar, birthday presents, partying with friends, taking trips to softball games, DVDs, there always seems to be something! This really sucks because I want to take a trip to Italy by the middle of next year, and I don't even have any money put away for it yet!
Anyone else have this problem?

Do you have Direct Deposit? If so, you should do what I do and have them put some of your paycheck into a savings account and the rest into your checking. I don't even notice the money is gone. I've managed to save a nice chunk of change.

Contra, ya gotta have priorities, man!!! Right now, yours is in the present, not the future.
What you might want to do (emphasize MIGHT) is give the money that you earmark (if you can - a percentage of your wages per week/month/however you get paid), give it to a person that you KNOW that you can trust and have them hold it for you. I have done this for many of my friends (And yes, they all got their money back - ALL OF IT)

Alice, how do you arrange that? I have been wishing there was an option like that, and there may very well be and maybe I am not aware of it. I am not sure who to talk to about it..the payroll department?

SR71,
If you already have direct deposit...inform your pyroll department to put a certain percentage of your check into a avings account in your bank of choice...I've done that for over 20 years and crap...I have a shitload of money waiting for me when I finally retire...at least a $100...just joking!! A little bit more than that!!!

Partying at the bar, birthday presents, partying with friends, taking trips to softball games, DVDs...
Hearing this one loud and clear. What worked for me was some financial show person saying: write down what you spend every dime on for a week, or month, and just look at it. I didn't even last a week; it's amazing how our memories forget this little purchase and that little stop to the liquor store...
I also figured out my daily net pay. Meaning say as a teacher I was netting $100 a day, which was pretty close at one time. Anyway, that $500 thingy that you MUST have becomes not worth $500, but five full days of work. It seemed less 'Must Have' after that.
And credit card addicts; take your credit card and buy a nice shreader, one last purchase you dont really need, then take the credit card and shread it.

If for some reason, your payroll department will only direct deposit into one account for you, then go to the bank.
Most banks will take X number of dollars from a direct deposit and automatically place it into your savings account for you. You just need to go in and have it set up.
I know BB&T, Bank of America, SunTrust, and Wachovia all have that option. Pretty safe bet that yours does too.

100 goes into checking account for the week and the rest (which is usually 2-3 hundred bucks) goes into my savings, it really ads up.....it took me just 3 months to save up to buy my car. if i can do it, anyone can.

i hear ya brother
i have a savings account, a checking account, and now i have another account at another back where i am trying to save 1/2 of the money for a new car
i dont have direct deposit nor do i get paid with a check- straight cash under the table (i hope chris the cop doesnt see this)
i think i should start doing what TRUMP does- he actually picks up coin he sees off the street -NO LIE- he even admitted it- and try to save that BUT I HATE COIN
my checking account, however, i barely use- i am not a check person but i have a check card as well- which, AGAIN, i dont use
however i dont party of go out to where i have to pay a cover at a club and i am not much of a drinker when i go to a bar or resturant
i have lots of friends from school who go out everynight and i look at them and wonder how the hell are they able to do that- wont they go broke?!

I kind of got stuck in the same boat recntly. I make a pretty good chunk of change a week and used to spend quite frivilously. I just stopped going out for the most part and I really question myself if I need to have that certain thing. If I see sales, I will usually buy the stuff but most times I am just stashing away. it is HARD man, really a bitch to save but once you start to accumulate a little bit you'll want to see how far it can go. besides, as you get older, responsibility will kick you in the ass and you'll really need to realise that you will need to save incase something happens.
I just got cut down to part time with my job and I virtually have spent nothing in the last 4 weeks. Miraculously though, I have been able to save quite a bit and now have Octobers rent and Septembers utility bills all set aside. Fortunately full time comes back next week.

i know what you mean about the sales thing fluff.....when i see a sale (especially clearance) i just HAVE to buy that, i act like ill never see it at such low prices ever again.
i am looking to move out and when i do move out i want to have basically nothing to bring with me, that means no buying and lots of throwing out

Like MLB.com had a 25% off sale on Fitted Hats the other week so I got me a Dodgers home, Tigers road and Indians road cap for my collection. They were $18.74 a piece (compared to $25 at the mall) and I got them and the Indians hat was the wrong one so they refunded my money AND let me keep the hat. So 3 hats for $37.50. A STEAL!
I still need to find the right Indians hat though.
...and I just know when I go to Woodbridge Center today, PacSun is SO like going to have a sale on SOMETHING and I will just need to buy it cause I need shirts and they have some decent shirts there.
Sometimes when you save and save and don't spend frivilously, it is good to reward yourself cause hey, you really deserve to treat yourself once ina while and have some MAD money. Just keeping a level head about it.

Man, both my roommate and I have this problem, and we came to the realization at about the same time. Basically we figured out we're living paycheck to paycheck when we don't actually NEED to do that. We just are choosing to not stop spending on unecessary shit.
Groceries? Who needs those? Let's eat/order out every night!
A new CD out this week? Strike that, I need at least EIGHT new CD's coming out this week.
Going to the bar/club over the weekend? Let's make it Thursday, Wedensday and Tuesday, too...
Then rent/bill time comes at the end of the month and we're scrambling to pull everything together. It's a mess completely of our own making.
So we both just bit the bullet and set up savings accounts with our seperate banks, and a portion of our paycheck is direct deposited into the savings portion, enough to at least cover rent and bills each month if need be, and the rest into checking. We've only had it for two months now, but so far it's given us a LOT more breathing room. It forces you you to spend smarter, and you end up not stressing out over money as much.

Of course you're not alone! Most of us have this problem. It's all about self-discipline and how important it is to you right now. I'd give advice but I'd just be repeating everyone else. Listen to them, they're wicked smaht.

...and I just know when I go to Woodbridge Center today,
Woodbridge Mall in Jersey? Nice, I shopped there back when they had a place called World Imports and the back was one Huge Head Shop. Bongs, pipes, glass, all the stoner stuff. Good times. Still go there, whats the burger place? Johnny Rocket? Out of Pleasantville?
Big Mall. Bad traffic.

I only had a 100 dollar bill today because Dollar rental car is seriously fucked up. But that is a different story for a different time.
Anyway I go to buy gas and I hand the guy a 100. the charge was like 21 dollars or something. And he looked at me like i had 9 heads and said " i do nto have change for this"
I was like this is a fucking gas station, in america. Find change. thats all i have. he said i must have smaller bills. so i show him i do not. and i told him i do not have a credit card. he was pissed and made change from his pocket. what a dick
When you pay cash, people get started. trying doign it at like best buy on a purchase of 50 dollars or more. they never get that.
