There are several criteria, which must be met for a diagnosis of Social Phobia or Social Anxiety Disorder. I'll list them for you, and I'll be happy to discuss them, but if you feel that this describes you I strongly suggest that you see a mental health care professional. Anxiety disorders are very responsive to many treatments.

A diagnosis may be made if all these criteria are met:

A. Marked and persistent fear of social or performance situations where embarrassment may occur.

B. Exposure to the social or performance situation almost always provokes anxiety (such as, palpitations, sweating, diarrhea, stomach ache, blushing, confusion, etc).

C. Awareness that the fear is excessive or unreasonable.

D. Feared social or performance situation is avoided or is endured with intense anxiety and distress

E. The avoidance, anticipation or distress in the feared social situation significantly interferes with the person's daily routine, job, academic ability, or social life, or if the person is markedly distressed about having the phobia

F. If the person is under 18, symptoms have to have existed for at least 6 months

G. Fear or avoidance isn't due to direct effects of substance (a drug) or a general medical condition or is not better accounted for by another psychiatric condition (for example, Panic Disorder, Separation Anxiety, Schizoid Personality Disorder)

H. If a general medical condition or another mental disorder is present, the fear or avoidance is not related to it.
