Anyone who's in college can tell you what an absolute fucking ripoff the textbook situation is. The charge you $85 for a new book, buy it back of you for $10, and then sell it used for $50. It's bullshit, and in most cases, there is nothing that can be done about it; the university bookstore has a monopoly. Today, I scored one for us.
I had to buy a book for a class I had yesterday. The professor told us to make sure we got the 2004 version of the book, some people had bought the 2003 version, meaning that the bookstore had both. The books look exactly the same, although the 2003 version is about $20 cheaper. The wheels start to turn.
I pick up a 2004 edition and my leatherman tool. I scratch the UPC barcode on the back and bring it up to the register. When it doesn't scan, I tell the register broad that I'll go get another one. I grab the 2003 edition, remember, it looks exactly the same and bring it up to the counter. She scans it through for $20 less. I pay, grab the 2004 edition and beat feet.
Yeah it's only 20 bucks, but like all things, it's the principle. Fuck them!
