My father is going on 81 years old...he still drives, cuts the grass, takes care of my Mom....and loves us all!!

I ws thinking about him today because of 9/11...he was a fireman in Hunt Point in the bronx for too many years than I can remember...He used to come home exhausted and yet still have the energy to talk to me, and my brothers and sisters...

He would take my Mom shopping whenever he was off-duty, whenever she wanted...he never complained!!! He worked extra jobs just to get us new shoes and tuition for school...

He would take us to the circus when it was in town or to the dentist for our yearly visit...

When I became a cop..I had a feeling that I was a dissapointment to him because I didn't follow in his footsteps..I was the first born and it was expected that you did what your father did...

When I graduated...I made it a point to show up at his firehouse in uniform...He came to the door and showed me off to all of my "Uncles"....he was so proud of me , I almost cried..

Over the years, as my father got older, I have learned to love him more and more...I hope he knows that!!!!

What about your Dad...Is he half as good as mine???? Brag away!!!!

There is so much to be thankful for but there is this one small thing i remember that i look back on 'and in my mind' it showed that he cared for us...

he would make my 4 brothers and I eat some fruit cocktail before each meal... i believe he really thought it had a 'health' factor to it... sometimes it was peaches or pears from the can also... the pears were my favorite

Another thing was there was this one day he went out and bought a bunch of camping stuff, a 10 man tent, coleman stove, dehydrated food, 7 sleeping bags, and more. mind you he never camped in his life but it was something he probably wanted to do and figured we would enjoy it too...

The first time we went camping in Maryland when visiting a cousin and it rained cats and dogs and the tent leaked. i remember him saying he had read the instructions and it said to somehow waterproof the tent and he 'should've done it' He went ahead and fixed all the leaks after that...

Then one day he came home with this big chain ladder that hooked to the window. We lived on the 4th floor apartment and the fire escape was at one end of the apartment and he was worried if we got caught on the opposite end during a fire.
