I was just thinking about what our Forefathers must have put up with to rebel against Great Britain! How bad were their conditions? Were the taxes that bad that they had to fight over them??? I was watching the "Patriot" tonight and it got me thinking...What would it take for me to take up arms against my government!!! What would make me fight for my rights as an American????? I 'm starting to get at that point!!!!

What is your opnion???

the first thing that came to my mind as i read your thread was it wasn't the taxes at all, they wanted to be 'owners' of the new land. they may have taken a lucky guess and figured Britain would give up on it eventually... Then you have the freedom to basically make the rules

considering how the American Indian got screwed over "for the land' there may be something to it...

The British were idiots...if they had managed the colonies more effectively we'd all be British today...

it wasn't just taxation...imho had the British spent more time trying to understand the american mindset things would have been different...

here's some background for you reeshy..

Here are a number of resources that document the American Revolution. There were definitely more contributing factors to the revolution besides taxation.

The War of Independence (http://odur.let.rug.nl/~usa/H/1990/ch2_p1.htm)

It seems to boil down to:

* Colonists feeling that they weren't receiving the rights due a British Citizen (including representation in parliament)

* Britain feeling that the Colonists were receiving their rights and representation.

Taxation was only a component of it. In fact, the taxation that supposedly sparked the revolution, had been on the books for years. Britain just hadn't been enforcing it.

Sort of like being allowed to park illegally for a year outside your place of business and then suddenly coming out from work one day to find a ticket on your car.

Imagine if Britain would of won the war?.. I think that the US map would look very interesting.. I picture this.. the New England portion staying as New England (colony of UK for a lonngg time), Southeastern US being divided between the Spanish & French.. Mountain + West Coast US belonging to Mexico, but eventually being conquered by Britain + France.. Then being split up by the countries due to wars... I see the Spanish having some stronghold in the Southern Mountain + West Coast.. :|

What would it take for me to take up arms against my government!!!

I've been hearing this a lot lately, mostly on C-Span and what have you, over the whole gun ownership thing....

I can't understand why anyone would think they could accomplish something with some kind of Mexican standoff against the government.... after all, they have, well, tanks....

and it didn't work out to well for Koresh, did it?

Not a dig at you, Reesh, just a response to all the "we need our guns to stand up to the governement" argument I've been hearing a lot of lately.

Thanks, FMJeff for the info ..already knew that though...I ws thinking more on the lines of what would take the AMerican public to have another Revolution...how far can the AMerican public be pushed by Big Government??????....and gun-control doesn;t come into my argument!!!!!

Thomas Jefferson once stated that America should experience a revolution every 20 years!!!!! Just to keep the country alive, vibrant and growing!!!!

i am completely serious when I say that I would revolt against this country if I knew that there would at least be other people fighting alongside me. Like maybe 10,000 people. I honestly believe that revolution wouldn't be that bad a thing to die for even if it were unsuccessful. Not even like i neccessarilly dislike the country, just because i think revolution really IS needed in every country in order to keep one's rulers in check and at leats know that there are large groups that are willing to fight for their rights.

I completely disagree with this thinking. I believe the purpose of our electoral system by the nations forefathers was put in place to avoid having violent revolutions. The purpose of electing people to office to run the country is in itself the revolution. It's a peaceful way to make change.

Granted in todays America with blurred political lines and payoffs and everything sneaky and dishonest that you could imagine that has been happening in our goverment over the past one hundred or so years that it sometimes seems that it may be a matter of time before people take to arms. Though I think that militias are the closest thing in this country to doing something like that, I don't how big their presence here is though.

i personally believe that the Constitution was way too Federalist dominated and therefore was shaped by guys who just overthrew a monarchy but still kinda wanted one. I don't find our forefathers infallible.

I just think that government can become really manipulative when there's nothing better to do (the Cold War's over, we need a new enemy to fight, make people think outsiders are bad/weak). That type of shit just doesn't seem right. It's even worse that people buy it. Revolution can raise awareness of other ideas not only for government but for the people.
