View Full Version : Who Should Replace Howard on WJFK?

It seems pretty clear that Infinity will not be able to find a magical replacement for all of the stations Howard is currently on. Maybe they can get a big name for NY and LA, but I'm suspecting that stations in cities like Washington, Baltimore, Philly and Tampa will rely on other local talent and give them the big promotion.

So...as far as DC goes...those of you who like to ponder such nonsense...who do you think it will be?

Didnt mean to spead Faeces of your 2000th post. What I mean is I'm too busy watching what's going on in general, with the moving and shifting of the FCC, and satellite Radio Channels announcing big names. Ok a big name. Howard.

It's a good Q, I'm just wondering what the whole radio landscape will be like by then. I would say this Howard/Sirius thing is by no means a slam-dunk for the channel. Theyre essentially betteing the farm on Howard, and that his fans will plunk down the cash on what was once free, and that is yet to be determined.

=

But I'll punt and say R+F mornings would be best for them, but i gotta admit i like them on 7-11, which is radio death, competing with Prime Time and sports.

Is it who SHOULD replace him, or do you mean who we WANT to replace him? Because, selfishly, I'd want R&F at either D&M's current 3-7 spot, or to go back to 11-3 (Not gonna happen, just wishful thinking), since those are the only slots where I get to hear most of a show. I've missed WAY too many shows since they went to 7-11, either because of work or just being out, and it sucks.

Getting mornings would be a HUGE break for them, and in the end I just wanna see them get what they deserve, so despite what I want, it would be very cool of them to get that spot. Best of both worlds? D&M get mornings, giving R&F drivetime, which is a big ratings grabber and lets me listen more often.

Disclaimer: I was probably listening too closely yesterday.

Don and Mike were arguing with a female caller who during the phone scan started complaining that D&M stole all of their bits from Howard Stern. She then basically spewed forth the normal tirade that is heard each time these charges are made towards any other DJ than Howard.

She also made mention of Howard's heading to satellite and said that D&M had no ability to do so.

Somewhere in the rambling shouts back and forth - Don mentioned something along the lines of:

"Won't she be suprised to wake up one morning to hear us on at 6:30 in place of who she's currently listening to."

Now, Don tends to talk out of his ass at times, but he's also one of those who "throws back the curtain" more than others.

Is this a carrot that's been dangled in front of D&M to keep them in line? Is it something they are already been in discussions about?

Interesting note is that the woman listens to both the boys and Howard in Nevada. Which means, if Don's comment can be believed, they would potentially have mornings in syndication.

More importantly for us, this would certainly open up the afternoon drive time. What I like is that Ron and Fez's current format that is very topic/news driven lends itself more to an evening commute allowing folks in traffic to catch up on the events of the day.

You can never listen too closely.

Don does talk out of his ass - the number of things they have talked about that never came to fruition is so redundant it's almost a bit on their show.

One thing they do better than most (I'll give them credit for) is bringing out the behind the scenes dramas to the air.

Two things...

(1) Shortly after the news of Howard going to satalite radio, Ron mentioned (on the air) that Don walked past him on the way out and said "December," and Fez acted like he knew what he was talking about ("OOOOOOH!") They made it sound like there was something in the works...

(2) Stern's ratings on WJFK took a hit in the last book, as did the rest of the station - except for Don and Mike, which are once again #1 in their timeslot.

Would make sense, I suppose, to get rid of Stern a good year before he bolts, and plop on a show that they own outright, that isn't going to be leaving for competition within a year - and talking about it all the time too...

I guess if D&M went on at 6am, that would open up 3 - 7 for R&F, and then 7 - 11 for The Hideout. Hmmmmm...

That said - I guess I'm personally leaning to The Sports Junkies in the morning. I think that would be a stronger station.

Yeah - they have completely fallen into the abyss.

I do miss them at nights, tho - I still remember the night of the sniper, and them shut in at the station, about a month before they left, as being some of the best radio I've heard in awhile.

Now with the shocking announcement that WHFS is gone. I bet the Junkies come back to WJFK. I know the station loves O Rielly for some reason.

But I would like to see:

Don and Mike - 6-11
Junkies 11-3
Ron and Fez 3-7
Hideout from 7pm to 11.

What will probably happen
Don and Mike 6am -11am

I have never been really a fan of the Junkies, but I do hope they find a good station where their fans
can listen to them.

Currently the line-up on WJFK should be

Howard Stern 6-11am
Out to Lunch 11-3pm
Don and Mike 3-7pm
Ron and Fez 7-11pm
The Hideout 11-1am

When Howard does leave for Satellite radio, the best WJFK line-up would be

Don and Mike 7-11am
Out to Lunch 11-3pm
Ron and Fez 3-7pm
The Hideout 7-11pm
News and or Music 11pm-7am

Syndicate the above line-up across the country. Ron and Fez will be heard live again in New York,
and new listeners will discover them in other areas.

Another option would be

Don and Mike 6-10am
Out to Lunch 10-2pm
Ron and Fez 2-6pm
The Hideout 6-10pm
The Stacy Show or The Cosmic Circus 10 pm-1am
News and or Music 1-6am

Since everyone (well, almost everyone...ok...only two people) are playing arm-chair PD, here's my take on things; how I think things will go (not how I would do it).

6-11 - Stern
11-3 - The Junkies
3-7- Don and Mike
7-11 - Ron and Fez
11-1 - The Hideout
1-3 - Loveline (another HFS Refugee) - but live
3-6 - Bill O'Reilly (tape delayed)

AFTER Stern leaves...

6-11 - Don and Mike
11-3 - The Sports Junkies
3-7- Ron and Fez
7-11 - Miles & Thrill (Baltimore's "Out to Lunch")
11-1 - The Hideout
1-3 - Loveline (another HFS Refugee) - but live
3-6 - Bill O'Reilly (tape delayed)

Or some combination. I just hope R&F don't get screwed.

Someone sent me a clip from the last five minutes of the Don and Mike Show, where Don went on and on talking about what a cluster fuck the whole thing is, and how Fez was nervous, and how the station needs to get rid of O'Reilly and make up its mind about Howard and stop making people wonder what the hell is going on.

This thread should be locked. It's not about Ron and Fez.

Hmmmmm...really? Even though it has direct implications on them and their careers?

Hopefully this sets R&F to step up and get the 3-7 spot when D&M move to mornings to take over for Howard when he bails.

Or will R&F get the shaft, and get dropped into middays and the Junkies are shifted into D&M's current time?

Damn...they would rather keep a shitty show tape delayed than something new that could be developed to be plopped in once the station makes the big switch - unless, of course, D&M get passed over for a new flavor of the month that Infinity is hard for, and insist on putting in the AM when Stern leaves.

And as far as Zappa - HA! Whatever. He reminds me of those mindless Stern hating zombies out there who don't know what to do with themselves knowing that soon they won't be able to hear him to hear what he is saying for them to supposedly goof on. They will be out of their minds not knowing where to channel their indignation.

Ah, well...as Mikeyboy posted elsewhere, at least Fidel...I mean, ZAPPA now has Giant Brian.

I am thrilled about O'Reilly. Great, great news.

Man...JFK came so close to getting this right.

Don't be surprised if O&A replace howard on alot of his stations. It already happened in syracuse as a trial run. They still have a whole year to work out the glitches and see if it works to syndicate their show to regular radio. I just wish some one would hear my prayer and syndicate ron and fez to XM radio. A guy can dream.

I'd be very surprised. It's happened on a Citadel station, so it might happen on a few more Citadel station, but there's no indication that Clear Channel or Infinity (especially not Infinity) have any intention to follow suit. Also, I'm sceptical that airing a heavily edited day-old show is a long term solution for AM drive in multiple markets.

The Hideout got screwed in this deal. I went to the station last night to talk to Dubs and Jefe and they got the shaft. I wish JFK would have left them in their time slot and put O'Reilly on afterwards. Hopefully O'Reilly will just leave now that no one will listen at that time and he will not have any DC callers to his show. Let's pray he moves to 570 am. and WJFK can bring back Jefe and Dubs. Those guys have worked their asses off for the station get zero money and this is the thanks that they get. Cameron thanks for supporting the boys hopefully you can get them back in the line up.

For now there is no long term solution however joel hollander is quoted as saying it's going to cost alot of money to get a replacement for howard and they have no intention of pulling him off the air to collect all the money his show does generate. That sounds like to me at least they are going to go looking for a replacement not just move on air talent they already have into his AM slot.

Infinity will not put on O&A, especially in Washington, Baltimore or Tampa. They lost a lot of money on them when they went off the air - lost more when they were on WJFK and #1 timeslot became 18th - and they have have no history w/ Balmer or Tampa.

And please don't read into this as "another biased Curtoid O&A Slam" - I do think it would be funny if O&A replaced Stern, but it's a slim chance it will happen on Infinity run stations, and a zero chance it will happen on WJFK, Live 105 or The Buzz.

The conventional wisdom is that Don and Mike will get those markets, and a few others; Stern's empire will be divided up by talkers that already do well in their markets, and the grand experiment of a national morning show on broadcast radio will be done.

Then there is the chance that Inifinity gets into bed with Sirius to let Stern out early of his contract - and then rip off the Citadel/O&A market and run day old Howard on the stations he is always on.

Those guys have worked their asses off for the station get zero money and this is the thanks that they get. Cameron thanks for supporting the boys hopefully you can get them back in the line up.

No shit. 12-14 hour days. For the last few months Dubs would work on D&M & R&F (or earlie), then do his show at 11pm, while Jefe would show up at the station at 11pm and then work the boards overnight. And, on top of that, they put on a really fun, original show.

Man...all of that wishing O'Reilly would be gone from middays, I never (in a million years) thought they would abandon The Hideout like that for a tape delayed O'Loser.

So close to getting it right...

I can't imagine this considered as a "slam" especially considering O&A's infinity history. There is ZERO chance that O&A will show up on Infinty.

As far as repeats of O'Reilly go... I can't imagine a bigger slam to phne sex bill than being on taped at 11pm in the nations 8th largest market. My guess and I have no support of this is that O'Reilly's continued presence on JFK it is more a contractual obligation than a programming decision.

I am really gonna miss "Who's weekend was it?"

Given the source, there are people here who might chalk it up to bias. He's absolutely right, though.

On the Junkies site it says that they have OA/dukes (?) backs. "They will land on thier feet." I've never listened to thier show but Chad Dukes is an annoying NO TALENT! Refferring to yourself in the first person, real origional dumbass. This is a bad move for JFK if true.-Mike

So far 2005 has brought Washingtonians the death of WHFS after 35+ years, the closing of Movie Madness in Georgetown (after 20 years) and Cowboy Cafe on Columbia Pike, a GW Bush 2nd term, and the end of The Hideout - and it's only January. In exchange, we have the Nationals.

The grapevine reports Big O & Dukes will be doing overnights on WJFK - 1am-5am. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

While I suppose it's not a bad idea doing something original for overnights, it's hard to be excited about it now that The Hideout is no more, in exchange for tape delayed O'Speedbump.

As much as they were their own, very original show, in many ways Jefe & Dubs also provided an almost extended version of R&F.

Pfffft.

New Article from Billboard (http://billboardradiomonitor.com/radiomonitor/news/business/net_syn/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000760517)

Interesting article that breaks down the problems facing stations that carry Stern. I think I would be ill if Infinity picked "Mancow" as their next flavor of the month; I really hope they leave the chosing up to the individual stations.

From DCRTV:

Stern Acknowledges D&M Could Be Replacement - 5/23 - We didn't hear it. But a DCRTVer tells us that Howard Stern came close to endorsing WJFK-FM afternoon guys Don and Mike as his replacement when he moves to Sirius Satellite Radio in 2006. The King Of All Media allegedly said such at 7:10 AM Monday. Another DCRTVer says that Stern sidekick Gary Dell'Abate mentioned that D&M might be replacing Stern nationwide. Stern remarked that it was possible for Washington, but he wasn't sure if it would apply to all markets. More as we hear it. Hmmm.....

Between this & the recent announcement that Infinity is finally going to allow steaming of shows (D&M, being the first and only one right now), it does seem that Don and Mike are once again in good standing with the company. I never thought of them as being the national replacement; I could see DC, Baltimore, Tampa and a few of the other markets that they share, but they are setting themselves up for a shit storm if they are put on in NY and Philly again.

The best thing that could happen for R&F if they stay on at Infinity is if D&M move timeslots, and things open up during the earlier part of the day (as D&M hinted R&F wanted last week).

I just picture most of the Stern affiliates looking to nab other local personalities, or flipping formats, instead of plugging in another national show from another market.

I would bet that the junkies (who were on mornings before WHFS got switched) will replace Stern. Don and Mike would make no sense as they have alot of live feeds on teh West Coast.

Doesn't it just seem logical that someone with Stern's ego would want someone like Don & Mike to replace him, after showing they couldn't pull #'s in major cities andd top markets. It would just make howard look all that much better....allegedly

It's all an ego thing for Howard I would bet....what does he care what happens with Infinity after he leaves, plus D & N M pose much less competition for him...Stern or Don and Mike (Leaving ONA out just for the sakeof this argument, cause they win hands down)

Staples
