The Washington Post has created a page of all of their various "Star Wars" articles from over the years.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/artsandliving/movies/starwarssith.html

It's pretty fun, actually, to see the reactions at the time.

Here's an interesting quote from a 1983 article by Gary Arnold (then critic of "The Post" - now the critic for "The Washington Times"), and it does underscore what a liar George Lucas has been about the story - how he always had this story in mind to go like this, etc. (Just in case there is a spoiler in there for someone, I'm whiting out part of it...)
quote: Back in 1977, during an extensive interview with Rolling Stone, Lucas outlined the prospective first trilogy as follows: "It's about Ben and Luke's father and Vader when they are young Jedi knights. But Vader kills Luke's father, then Ben and Vader have a confrontation, just like they have in 'Star Wars,' and Ben almost kills Vader. As a matter of fact, he falls into a volcanic pit and gets fried and is one destroyed being." Without going into detail, suffice it to say that the completed trilogy would now require major revisions to that original concept. And the longer Lucas tries to sustain the saga, the greater the chances of being forced into tight and ultimately suffocating plot corners.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/05/04/AR2005050401540.html

THAT WAS WRITTEN 22 YEARS AGO!!!!

I have always felt that Lucas was making it up as he went along - which I wouldn't mind if he was honest about it. To later pretend that he ALWAYS thought of this or that, is just hooey - there is no way that he thought Vader was Luke's father when he made Episode 4 / and there is no way he thought that Luke & Lea were siblings when he made Episode 5. Just sloppy...

ALL OF THAT SAID - I'm still seeing this stupid movie - tonight - at the Uptown - and I'm sure I'll leave loving it and see it again this weekend - again, at the Uptown - and it won't be until I get over whatever delusion I have that I am still that 10 year old who saw it with his mother at the old State Theatre, that I may come to my senses. At this point, however, not even the Diet Pepsi, Burger King, Cell Phone, M&M's, 7-11 and a thousand other obnoxious tie-ins have killed it.

But Vader kills Luke's father, then Ben and Vader have a confrontation, just like they have in 'Star Wars,'

i'll give lucas a pass on this one, that's pretty much the version of the story that ben tell luke, that vader betrayed and murdered anakin -- not literally, and ben later explains his version ...

but, at this point it's just silly ... i had plans to see a 10:00am showing tomorrow, but i got a last minute interview ...

I'm such a geek. He
didn't quit, He came back to finish his training. Yoda said there was
nothing more to learn, but he wouldn't be a Jedi until he faced Vader.
I'm guessing this was to take place of "The Trials" which they've never
really shown or descibed. Anakin didn't go through "The Trials" since
he proved himself during the Clone Wars.

I
always saw this as lip service, Yoda was dying and too weak to train
Luke any further. He told him his training was done so that Luke could
beleive his training was done and not doubt his abilities, because he
was now "the last Jedi"

Further evidence that Luke's training
wasn't done comes in AOTC, because apparently nobody ever told him,
"When facing a Sith lord, don't throw down your lightsaber, because
it's kinda useful if he starts shooting lightning at you..."

I have always felt that
Lucas was making it up as he went along - which I wouldn't mind if he
was honest about it. To later pretend that he ALWAYS thought of this or
that, is just hooey - there is no way that he thought Vader was Luke's
father when he made Episode 4 / and there is no way he thought that
Luke & Lea were siblings when he made Episode 5. Just sloppy...

Lucas
always said he didn't understand why fans of the movies liked Boba Fett
so much, and how he always saw him as a minor character. When the new
movies came around, suddenly he's the basis of all the stormtroopers?
Yeah, this was the plan all along...

Vader being Luke's
father was seat of the pants too, Lucas wanted a big cliffhanger for
Empire, and Obi-Wan's "from a certain point of view" line in Jedi is
just another reason why that movie isn't worth a pair of fetid dingo's
kidneys

God, I watched Menace again a couple of days
ago, I don't know. looking back on it it feels like "Who Framed Roger
Rabbit" like 6-7 humans in a cartoon world. The ONLY thing I've
found interesting about these new movies is Palpatine's plot, and
acension from senator of an unregarded planet to Emperor of the Empire.
I think Anakin's path is pretty obvious and even forced. (don't get me
started on the love affair with Padme) Palpatine's change is much
deeper, and dare I say, believeable...

but yoda's so ubah, he trained his "Innate Sith lightning repellant"
skill, plus he's the only Jedi we've seen (haven't seen III yet) who
can actually do it himself

I just fond it comical, how Obi Wan just nonchellantly holds his
lightsaber in front of him to absorb the lightning, I just thought,
"oh, that was easy..."

Plus, Anakin may have known, but if I
remember right, they didn't know Tyrannus (Dooko, Saurman, Fu-Manchu,
Man w/ the Golden Gun, whatever) was a sith, and Anakin wasn't
expecting the lightning. Once Obi-Wan saw that power used, he knew what
to do.

Nothing proves that GL was making it up as he went along MORE than the introduction of "midichlorians" in Episode I.

The force is explained and talked about several times in the original trilogy....midif'ckingchlorians are never mentioned. ("energy field...it's all around us..binding the galaxy....")

Then, out of nowhere, Liam Neeson starts yammering about little microscopic creatures that we host within our cells and "if we quiet our minds...we can hear them communicating with us". I mean really...WHAT THE F'CK!?

It adds nothing to the overall story and I can't see how there could be a midicholorian "payoff". In fact, I don't really remember there being much midicholorian talk in EpisodeII. Which REALLY leads me to believe that GL was just kinda scripting PHANTOM while he was shooting it.

The whole midicholorian THING takes away from the religious (and "sorcery") aspect of The Force that he took SO LONG to build in the original movies.

My theory is that Lucas has planted these files just like the music files that were showing up on Kazaa a few years ago. They were the proper title & length of the real songs, and usually were the real song, but with the audio equivalent of a watermark every 20-30 seconds or so. That way you wouldn't burn them to a disc & start trading further. Just enough to get you excited about the project.

I think since this file can't be viewed until it's complete (that's an assumption, anyone know a way around this?) it was planted to keep us busy trying to steal it util the movie comes out. Then you get pissed when you can't finish downloading it & wind up so frustrated you run out to see the movie.

This is the best episode of the new trilogy and it's the 3rd best episode of the saga. In other words...it's exactly what you expect.

There are a TON of missed opportunities but, to be fair, there are quite a few scenes that are f'cking cool.

PROS:

The Vader transformation scenes do not disappoint.

Palpatine is the MAN in this movie. A real snake.

The music is better than ever. All the themes are there.

There is practically NO humor, comedy, or slapstick.

CONS:

It feels WAAAAY too video game-y at times.

The acting is as choppy and wooden as ever.

Anakins movements and mannerisms while in the Vader suit seem kinda awkward.

Plot holes here...plot holes there. (the usual stuff)

Why I did not like it:

-Why the fuck would a goddamn robot have fucking tuberculosis?

-It
was essentially the same as Attack of the Clones: an hour and a half of
boring topped off with a half hour of great, intense, fight scenes.

-"WHAT
HAVE I DONE? NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!" That should have been a defining
moment in the movie, and instead it had me laughing for 5 minutes.

-I
thought Anakin would take a more definitive step towards the dark side.
Instead, it was like he said "light side or dark side? meh......" and
all of a sudden he's off killing children.

-The first fucking
scene was the most blatant CGI showing off I have ever seen. I know
that's essentially what Lucas is doing with this trilogy, but in that
scene he took it to the point where I had no idea what was going on. He
was so concerned with getting the audience to go "WOW!" that he forgot
to add in any continuity.

-I thought I was done with the stilted
dialogue and awkward acting of the scenes between Anakin and Padme. Way
too much in this film.

-"She's losing the will to live."? Kiss my dick!

-Way
to piss away another great villian. How long was Grevious swinging
around those four sabers? 8-9 seconds before he lost one? Another 8-9
before he lost another one? That could have been a REALLY great fight
if he drew it out a bit longer. As it is, I'm not convinced Grevious
could kill any Jedi, certainly not with his emphysema.

-Really,
what the fuck was up with that? Even if he had organic parts, wouldn't
the fact that he was hacking shit up every 5 goddamned seconds impede
him a bit when he's jumping out of spaceships and twirling around 4
lightsabers?

-Who the hell was in the Darth Vader suit in that
one awkward scene? Frankenstein. I thought he was doing the robot, not
exploding with force power.

-When Yoda was trying to hang on in
the last part of his fight with Sidious, could they have used a more
unpleasant sound. I did not enjoy 8 surround sounds speakers blasting
out the sound of fingernails scratching a chalkboard.

-I could have done without R2D2's wacky hijinks in the first scene. At least they toned down C3PO.

-Awful
dialogue which was to be expected. "This is the sound of liberty dying.
Thunderous applause." Oh please, grace us with more of your cutting
political insight and sharp tongue, Mr. Lucas!

-This has more to
do with the freak sitting next to me, but when Anakin was about to kill
those children, the guy next to me had an orgasm. I mean, really. He
started shaking and slivering in his chair, giggling like he was having
his dick sucked by Scarlett Johansson.

-That "Happy Empire Day"
line wasn't in the film, or at least I don't think so. I couldn't
understand half of what the Emperor said after he turned all white.

-Hey Obi-Wan! Way to stand there while Anakin chokes Padme to death!

-It
takes them from the end of Episode 2 to Episode 4 to build the Death
Star, which is like 20+ years, and then from Episode 5 until Episode 6
which was certainly not anywhere close to 20 years, may

Too bad most other examples of technology in the later Star Wars Years don't follow this.

I'd like to second "NOOOOOOOOO!!!" as probably the worst part in the movie. When it happened, I was watching it in a packed theatre in Middlesex county, and the whole place let out a collective groan. It was REALLY bad.

Agreed.

The "NOOOOOOOOooooo!!" scene was, easily, the worst part of the movie. Maybe even the worst moment of the Saga. It didn't look, sound, or feel right.

Whenever a character is TRYING to convey sadness and the entire audience is laughing.....you know you're watching a poorly directed movie.

I enjoyed the movie, but it was more of being part of the experience
of being with the crowd at the Uptown - some of whom had been there for
two weeks in line (I found out that they took shifts, and they actually
raised money for Children's Hospital, so good for them and their
nerdling hearts).

One friend of mine in line was interviewed by
the NPR - another friend was on the local Fox station, that got picked
up across the network - heard from friends out of DC who saw him this
morning!

I don't know if I liked it because I just wanted
to like it, or if is a movie that will hold up with me - IT REALLY was
better than Episodes 1 & 2, and may even be better than the
original "Jedi."

HBox had some good points. The bit with General
Grievous walking around like a lil old lady was actually a nugget for
the hard core fans who saw the Cartoon Network "Clone Wars" series,
where the last time we see him, before he leaves with Palpatane, he is
injured by Mace Windu in an attack. There were several nods in the
movie to the cartoon, actually.

I will disagree about the
"NOOOOOOOO!" moment, however. I was really into that moment, as was the
theatre I went with. For the previous 45 minutes, for the most part,
Obi Wan has been stoic, and emotionless, even as he and Yoda are
looking at dead children. The whole point of them not getting emotional
was hammered home there. Even during the battle with Anakin he shows
very little emotion, until the battle is over and he leaves him there,
legless and slipping into the lava. I really thought that entire
sequence was very emotional and (if you are to let yourself get into
the entire story) heartbreaking.

My only real personal
quibble with it is that they really did try and cram so much into it,
that sequences that could have had more to it were given the short
shift - much like the end of Matrix 2, it was like watching a series of
montages, they kept the pace so fast. We could have seen more
with the Wookies - more with the Jedi's actually putting up a fight -
more with Obi Wan's battles - more with Jimmy Smits and his world
(finally we at least see it!) It underscores my point I've made several
times - the first movie, in the entire 6 movie series, is pointless and
did not need to be made. The elements from this movie could have been
expanded on, and (had they made Anakin Darth Vader in my alternate
reality Episode 2), not only could we have bridged some more time
before "A New Hope," but we could have had a real Darth Vader movie,
AND we would have had a movie that really would have delivered some
surprises, instead of just givinig us a scene we've known about for
almost thrity years.

Ending this movie where we basically began
30 years ago was an beautiful touch, imo, and did a lot (with me) to
bridge this trilogy with the next. At least the addressed the fact that
CSPO doesn't recognize his home planet, or have any memory of Obi Wan!

I still have doubts that all six work together - it's more like two trilogies, from two different times.

A friend of mine asked me how I would have done the "Noooooo!" scene.

My suggestion: Instead of one, long, loud, drawn out "Nooooooo!" I would have had Vader say "No" a few times, getting louder and louder, with the Force Crushing getting stronger and stronger each time.

FYI: I think the reason Obi-Wan didn't break Anakin's Force Choke on Padme is because he might have run the risk of Ani accidentally snapping Padme's neck.

You know, there's a restaurant in my town called McDonalds, maybe
you've heard of it. They sell burgers, fries, shakes, that kind of
stuff; good, old fashioned, red, white and blue, American food. I hate
it. The place sucks. The meat, if you can call it that, resembles a
flat, gray hockey puck in shape, color and consistency. I'm pretty sure
it's far below "Grade A" quality. The tomatoes are only tomatoes in the
sense that they are red and have seeds, the resemblance between them
and the actual fruit ends there. The lettuce is brown, flaccid, and
tastes more like the earth it was grown in than actual lettuce. The
condiments; ketchup, mustard, mayo, and "special sauce" all have
approximately the same taste and color. The pickels, I think, are
actually pickeled assholes, not pickeled cucumbers, and you could drive
nails with the rolls they're so Goddamn stale.

For whatever
reason though, the place is really, really popular. They've served
somewhere in the neighborhood of 18 bazillion burgers or something like
that. What I can't figure out, though, is why I continue to go there. I
mean, I literally hate the place. I loathe it. I want nothing to do
with it, and yet I'm compelled to eat there. I know walking in that I'm
not going to have a satisfying meal. I'm going to sit there just like
all the other sheep and hype believing morons and eat my crap burger,
having to force down every swallow, and I'm not going to stop. Every
time they bring out a new sandwhich or a new burger, I'll be among the
first to eat one. All the while knowing that I'm not going to like it.
I'll pony up my hard-earned money for a value meal, I'll super size it,
and I'll line the pockets of the fat bastards running the show. And
then when I'm done, I'll complain.

That's it. That's my hook.
That's why I go back. I get to complain. I get to tell all the people
that obviously like the food that it sucks. I get to give them, via the
internet, my unvarnished opinion, in all its glory, of their food of
choice. Instead of doing that which a normal, well-adjusted, socially
functional human being would do and just not eat food that disgusts me,
I go, and sit with this rabble, choke down bite after bite of this
vile, so-called sustenance, regardless of whether or not I like it, all
so I can write my, if I do say so myself, brilliantly scathing
commentary on a message board somewhere and tell all my friends how
much I thought the food sucked. I'm thinking that it's kinda sad
though. Maybe if I don't like the food, I just shouldn't eat it.

That's true.

I saw the first one day it came out, and got so goddamned burned I didn't have think about seeing the second one once the trailers for that one started airing and it looked equally as mind-numbing. I finally saw it when it premiered on HBO, and even then felt kind of ripped off.

I'll admit, a lot of the action clips for this new one have looked damn cool, so maybe I wanted to check it out...hence downloading it first (there are finally COMPLETE files out there now)...and yeah, the action sequences were righteous, but the rest of it was just as awkward and tedious as the last two movies.

No money for you, George! And yeah, I've gone out of my way to not buy any tie-in product these days...not that the money-machine will notice, but it makes me feel better.

Anakin's scenes with Kenobi & Palpatine, etc., were very good, but his scenes with the woman who was supposed to be the love of his life seemed so forced & uncomfortable it was unbelievable.

Christensen's obviously not that bad an actor with the way he performed some of his other scenes in this movie. I've loved Portman in a couple of other movies already. How could they be that bad together?

SOME OF THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS, SO IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE, YOU MAY NOT WANT TO READ ON
Saw it last night at midnight in Times Square. First half was kinda weak, and some things were just plain wacky... especially with R2-D2... But DAMN that movie finished strong. Made me forget about anything wrong with the first half. The last hour is some of the most intense drama of all 6 movies. From Mace Windu's death on, the movie really took an amazing turn. Between Anakin killing children and the fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan, I was in awe at how dark a turn the movie had taken. Anakin laying on the ground, helpless and being burned alive was fucking INTENSE. That familiar first breath from Darth Vader's mask sent chills down my spine. I loved seeing the inside of the Rebel Blockade Runner, the appearance of Wedge Antilles, and the sight of the Death Star under construction. And I damn near cried during the last scene on Tatooine, with that famous shot of the two suns setting.

The last hour or so of this movie is the closest thing to the original Star Wars as the new Star Wars will ever get.

I'm gonna go see it 8 more times.

I have always since the release of Episode I wanted to see how the
story would play out. How everything came and took us to the beginning
of A New Hope. I am happy with how eveything has played out. I tried to
take each film as a part of the grand story. At least with the recent
Trilogy.

I felt quite empty leaving Episode III this afternoon
because as far as the story knows, you kind of had a jist of what was
going to happen. You HAD to know. The execution even was not all that
bad. I was cursing George Lucas after the film though cause i remember
the wonder and amazement in seeing what would happen next in Jedi and
Empire and you really didn't knopw. Maybe it is cause I was a naive
little kid and it just gripped me. I almost wish that Episodes I - III
would have come out in the 70's - 80's and then IV - VI would have come
out today. I understand how Lucas wanted to have the story play out but
I wish I would have had the anticipation build with each movie instead
of piecing each film together to get back to square one.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the prequel trilogy:

The Pod Race

Darth Maul-Obi-Wan-Qui Gon fight

The Padme-Anakin-Obi-Wan Arena fight.

Mace Windu's Jedi Assault.

The Clone attack.

The Obi-Wan-Anakin-Dooku-Yoda fight.

Everying in "Sith" after Mace Windu confronts Sidious.

That's it. Nothing else happened. You hear me! NOTHING....... ELSE........ HAPPENED.

I already saw it twice. I thought it was easily the best of the trilogy. I was hoping it would be good and wasn't disappointed. In my opinion I think Lucas gave the fans what we want. Hey it's only a movie, and I was entertained. What more can you expect.

Question:

Exactly HOW does Vader know (in Episode V) that Luke is his son? When Vader was "born"...the Emperor tells him that Padme is dead. There is no reason for Anakin to think that the children survived.

Does he just "sense" that Luke is his son? If so...why doesn't he sense that Leia is his daughter?

Am I overlooking something really really obvious?

All right - I apologize up front if this officially pushes this past the point of no return into ner-dom, but here are some photos from Wednesday's Star Wars Block Gathering (aka: The Line) in front of DC's fabled Uptown Theatre...I officially dub this exhibition "The Mojo Nightmare"

Here is the start of the midnight movie line. The people who were blocked off over there had been there for about two weeks. They took turns in line, and raised money for Children's Hospital and the Capital Area food banks.

At this point in the line, people were here between noon and 2pm. The blond woman was actually in line for her 17 year old son, who was an odd kid - half geek and half jock. Mom left when he arrived, and later his sister and brother showed up. At different times during the day all four of them were interviewed by different people in the media.

The hard core people had tables, games, chairs - one person had a lay-z-boy. Then there was the television, which people huddled around to watch all the movies, the holiday special, and the Clone Wars cartoons, which were very popular.

Eventually a second line began to form. This was for a 7pm screening for three radio stations, and members of the media not cool enough to have seen it earlier in the week. At one point there were about 1000 people out and about, between the two lines, the gawkers and the press.

The two lines slowly come together - it is about 4pm about now.

Eventually, you knew, the costumes would have to come out!

If you look behind the news truck in the second image, you will see the 7pm line has gone to the end of the block, and is now snaking up the hill.

The Yoda is actually a "Shrek" plush doll - that actually cracked me up.

There...it was like you were there, but without the smell, and the nausia of seeing grown men hit each other with plastic flash lights.

Very dissapointing, A few cool things can not overcome the bad acting, bad direction and superflous storytelling, Its slightly better then Episode 1 and about the same as Episode 2

Another plot problem right out of Revenge of the Sith

So end of the movie Yoda tells obi won to learn how to join the force after you die, now que ahead to Return of the Jedi, end of movie who standing there Yoda, Obi and frickin Anakin (dont get me started how GL put the kid in and took out the original guy) so when did Vader have time to learn this new power, It seems to Yoda and Obi won a few years to learn it and didnt seem like a priority for the Sith.

What the real problem is that its just another thing that didnt need to be in the movies,

examples

Midchlorians, Dexs Diner, C3po being built by anakin, Chewbacca, Jango Fett, Shes Lost the will to live, Nooooooo!!!!

The Padme/Anakin scenes were pretty bad, but most of them could have been forgiven - there were scenes within scenes, however, that should have been edited out completely, the worst being, "I'm so in love." "No I'm more in love." "No, you are more beautiful because I'm in love."
SHAT UP ALREADY! However, as much as the yacking between Ani & Padme annoyed me, I really, really liked the scenes with the Palpatane. In a perfect world, these scenes could have been played out over the course of two movies instead of cramming them into one.
The "NOOOOO!" thing still doesn't bother me (and none of the audiences I saw it with chuckled at it); it really came across to me as a classic homage to the old Universal Monster movies, and puts a whole different spin of what we always thought why Darth Vader became Darth Vader. Everything was done and corrupted for a forbidden love (and now we know why Jedi loven is forbidden), and after he literally escapes hell, he learns it was all for nothing.
I did catch another glitch with the movie, however...
* Obi Wan and Yoda decide to go to the Jedi temple to find out what's happened; they choose a time when they know it will be empty, because the Senate will be in session. It is during this session that Palpatane announces the formation of an "Empire." HOWEVER, during what we are supposed to believe is the same time, Yoda and Obi Wan are already referencing him as "The Emperor." AND...in the next scene with Obi Wan and Padme, he reverts back and is calling Palpatane the "Chancellor."
Seeing it more than once, however, I did catch a shot of the Millennium Falcon, docking at the big space port, the same time Anakin and Obi Wan were landing (at the start of the film). Hard to catch, unless you see it on a big screen, and know where to look. Made me chuckle.

As far as $$ goes, it made more in it's opening weekend than the last two made combined their opening weekends, and both of those went on to out-gross "Empire" and "Jedi." Worldwide, "Phantom Menace," however, has actually made more money than the original film.

i also liked it. i like Star Wars, but not as much as you guys seem to. i didn't go into the movie expecting award winning acting or dialogue. thats not the reason i enjoyed the original trilogy and i didn't expect it in the new ones...its Star Wars. in fact i wish the special effects were more like the original ones. some of the stuff is cool, but at times there is just to much of it.

Obi Wan and Yoda watch the hologram of Palpatine telling Anakin
about the new Empire. They knew Bail was called to an emergency
Senate meeting, so they can assume that the meeting was to unveil the

would. Maybe he reverted back to Chancellor to appeal to Anakin
and not give Palpatine additional power in this conversation.

Not sure if this is true or not, but someone at work told me that he heard the movies following Jedi will be ALL computer animated and no actors. I haven't heard that anywhere, though if that's the case, then it will suck. I won't go to see that and I think it would kill the whole series.

I haven't heard much about Episode III

For Episode II Lucas made a few small editing changes to the film after they were sent off to make film prints. Since the digital ones didn't need as much time he had a few more days to make small changes (Like Padme holding Anakin's mecha-hand at the end which she didn't on the film version) These changes made it to the DVD.

I don't think he was editing right up to the last minute with Episode III, so there may not be any differences.

I don't think The Falcon was supposed to be "hidden".

The YT-1300 class of freighter is about as common in the Star Wars Universe as Saturns are in the United States. You see one everywhere. So for people to clap at it makes them really gay. Although the showing I went to their was a guy in a full Stormtrooper outfit and when the opening credits rolled some jerk off lit up one of those Sharper Image lightsabers. I screamed at him that he should go on a fishing trip with Scott Peterson.

I liked the movie, although having read the book first, there were some things that made the book better. For example in the book, Yoda has an actual conversation with Qui-Gon and he tells how they actually can live forever in the force, and not just a quick reference to the whole concept. Also the book doesnt make Grievous a pussy who coughs. I have to admit I was totally disappointed with how Lucas screwed the character up. Overall it was a good ending to the saga, but I do have to agree the whole "Noooooooooooo!!" sequence was retarded. Baddest mother fucker in the universe screams like corky after he dropped one his two scoops of ice cream on the ground. Come on!

As for the whole saga of what happens after Return of the Jedi, there are some great books out there that show the rebuilding of the New Republic. Some books to contradict one another and the films. The most notorious of the lot is the Jedi Academy Trilogy, which tries to contradict Lucas on when the Death Star was first built. I recommend starting off with Timothy Zahn's Trilogy first (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and Last Command) they kicked ass and were more in the spirit of the original films. Stackpole's X-Wing series follows the exploits of Wedge Antilles as he tries to rebuild Rogue Squadron and how they fight battles that help the New Republic gain ground in the galaxy. Great reads.

That is my nerdcast of the day.

Here's the best answer I found so far:

Obi-Wan & Yoda...both Jedi MASTERS. They were one with the force after years of training. Qui-Gon, while being a really spiffy guy...was only a Jedi-Knight. He lacked the skill to become one with the force. It could also be argued, that to "vanish" it takes a bit of preparation...Obi-Wan pauses before being struck down...Yoda had plenty of time, but Qui-Gon got mowed down, and had no time to prepare.

Also Qui-Gon's midichlorian level may have been low. He needed midichlorian replacement tharapy.

In part lV (when Darth Vader is choking the general at the table) why would ANY general give Vader ANY shit about the force. Given the history of the Sith and the force, was this general just out of the loop? And who is second in command, Vader or Tarkin?

You become a Knight first but once you begin to train another jedi, you are a master.

Yoda was Dooku's master, Dooku was Qui-Gon's Master, Qui-Gon was Obi-Wan's master, Obi-Wan was Anakin's Master. Yoda was also Luke's master and I guess Luke becomes a Master after ROTJ in those books when he rebuilds the Jedi Order.

There was no evidence that Qui-Gon's midichlorian level was low.

Lucas said the dissaperaing jedi thing would be explained and it wasn't. There is a deleted scene were Qui-Gon speaks to Yoda in ROTS and that started to explain things. I think you are correct about having time to prepare. Qui-Gon becomes one with the force after dying. Obi-Wan and Yoda start to become one with the force beforehand. Qui-Gon is the one who shares this knowledge with Yoda and Obi-Wan. He did not lack any skills and it indeed very spiffy.

I think Tarkin was meant to be in charge when they made that first movie, Vader's role in the Empire expanded once he became a more popular character (And Tarkin died) but he does seem to take orders from Tarkin, and Leai seems to know this too (the "Holding Vader's leash" comment)

droids were very common and not unique. (Same holds true for the model of protocol droid that C3PO was). Also, droids werent
looked on as pets, more like slaves. Obi Wan didnt really care much
when his R3 droid got ripped apart on his Jedi star fighter. They were
also often given memory wipes. (its explained in the books that they go
unstable if their memories arent wiped periodically). In fact we see
that C3PO's memory was to be wiped at the end of EPIII. Clearly R2s
memory wipe wasnt written into the story so that R2 could remeber Obi
Wan.

I think lower tech special effects explains why R2 doesnt do as cool stuff in the later movies...
And why in the later trilogy does R2 appear to have lost the abbility to catch things and leap frisklly out of spaceships?

Yes - questions that will always follow these movies, now that he did the prequels. Some answers, however...

1. Obi Wan is 25 in EPISODE 1 / He is 35 in EPISODE 2 / He is 40 in EPISODE 3. This would make the character of Obi Wan about 60 in time for "A New Hope." The actors who played Obi Wan are a different story - Ewen McGregor was 33 when he made Episode 3 / Alec Guiness was only 62 when he made the original "Star Wars," so there is around a 10 year age difference in the actors.

Ben & Beru were supposed to be in their early 20s in Episode 2, which would make them in their mid 40s in the original "Star Wars." The actors, however, were in their 50s & 60s, so - yeah - they should have done better with that. What I don't get is why Ben doesn't recognize C3PO

2. Everyone has brought that up, and supposedly the only thing we can come up with is that (a) they figured out what they were doing and worked really fast, (b) is it only 4 years difference between Episodes 4 & 6 - what if it's closer to 10 or 15 years, and we've just been p'nked all these years, (c) that shot in "Sith" was actually out of continuity and it was a fast forward a few years, or (d) they were already working on the 2nd one, as a back up, and just didn't tell anyone. NONE OF WHICH make any sense.

4. I guess we are supposed to assume that Obi Wan is just a lying sack of crap - I mean, after what he did with Luke about telling him with Vader, etc. He's just playing a game there.

And as far as R2D2, again, I guess we are to assume that all the wear and tear the lil droid has had in the years between Episode 3 & 4 that he lost that ability. Lame.

I go back to what Ron said about a month ago, however - why is it left to the fans to make excuses?!?! Peter Jackson, by contrast, spent time to develop a complete project that doesn't leave unbelievable holes for fans to have to create reasons why this or that didn't happen. It's just so damn frustrating, if you pay attention to this.

Jackson just had to adapt it to the screen and still have it make sense (which he did very well, It would be impossible to translate EVERYTHING from that book into 3 movies)

But that is a good point, George Lucas is a Film Maker and should have created these series of films so that everything you need to understand the story is contained in the film.

Things like the ages of characters isn't important (unless it's mentioned specifically and key to the plot) and other things are easily answered:

The First Death Star Contruction may not have been at the same pace as the Second's (They may have stopped contruction for some other major event during those 20 years. Perhaps a group of surviving Jedi gathered without Obi-Wan and Yoda; Vader and Palpatine may have had to deal with them for a bit, or there may have been a Workers Strike!)

The Second could have been started just a few short years after the first (as mentioned before)

Perhaps the Death Star we see in Episode III isn't the same one we see in Episode IV, it could be a prototype, or just one that was destroyed before Episode IV (This wouldn't be a great idea, since the whole reason of having that Episode III Deathstar was to connect that movie to Episode IV)

George Lucas had plenty of time to make sure nothing from Episodes I-III contradicted what was in Episode IV-VI. It's a very simple story, and he could hire a bunch of Star Wars Fan-Boys to go over the plot and make sure nothing fell to far from the events to take place after these newer films.

He's just a lazy story teller, I get sick when people say he's a master story teller, He a great film maker but only on the technical side of things.

It's not the workprint that was leaked right when the movie opened (the one with the time code on the top) and it's not even using some kind of recent P2P program (Kazaa or Bittorrent) It using a technology created in 1979 and not known by most people who use computers everyday!

I'm watching it now and it looks great, it's on DVD (so I don't have to watch it on a PC, I can watch it in my Den!) and it even has a nice menu and subtitles! The offical DVD will look better and have better sound (this is only 2.0 stero, it wasn't professionally mixed in 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS) but it still looks so much better than VHS/LD and for most people this will look like a professional studio produced DVD!

Hollywood/Movie Theater Owners had better start making changes.
The more I watch this movie the more pissed off I get at it. I have to say that the overall story is not that bad. It is not that great either, just ruined by a director who doesnt know what the fuck he is doing. I reread the novel for the movie again and the fucking book rocks. There are so many key elements they left out in the movie. Such as Yoda's convo with Qui-Gon, which was just quickly alluded to at the end of III. Just awful. The other thing they went into more depth was Anakin killing the children and the Jedi Masters, fucking well done in the book. Butchered on film. Even the video games (Ep III for PS2 or XBox, Battlefront II, etc) had better scenes in them regarding the whole temple massacre scene.

And also, did anyone else notice the Bill Shatner school of acting throughout this debacle. Mace Windu finds out that their most dreadful enemy is in charge of the Galactic Republic, and he is just like "A...sith...lord." Ugggghhhh.

I know I am rehashing old shit that I never got a chance to vent the first time around, but just some thoughts that I wanted to share regarding this debacle of a film. Totally destroyed the integrity of the saga, and just pisses me off the more that I see it. Lucas should have of done with these films, that he did with Empire and Jedi. Let someone else direct and write the screenplay. Ohhh well.

I hate the new trology. Hate.

There is one thing in particlular that turns me off to the prequels, and that's: midicholorians.

First and foremost- IT'S TOTALLY NOT NECESSARY. Not even a little. The audience understood and accepted that The Force is an energy field that can be LEARNED to be manipulated. Some people are better at this than others. This energy field is created by all living things. We get that too. We understood it. You know WHY we understood it? BECAUSE IT WAS EXPLAINED TO US TWICE! Obi and Yoda BOTH explain/define the force to Luke and they make no mention little microscopic creatures that live in our bloodstream. Why in the fuck would Lucas feel the need re-define it? It really just doesn't make sense on any level.

SECOND: is it me or...is the whole "the more little tiny aliens you have in your bloodstream, the more powerful you are" concept just a tad too close to Scientology??

What is it about Star Wars that people are actually personally offended when the movies aren't that good?

Im a fairly die hard SW fan (read the books, play the games, etc etc) and I liked the 2nd and 3rd prequals. However, one thing I wish Lucas did was make the first prequal start later in Anakins life. Something to make the first movie interesting, its the only one I wont sit and watch if I catch on the tube.

i know it was probably posted somewhere in this thread before but

i hate how obi won says luke is our last hope and then yoda counters with there is another when at the end of ep 3 we clearly see obi won and yoda both at the birth

also why did they use hayden christensen at the end of jedi for the celebration but still use the old man's face when luke takes off the visor ???

also what exactly kills darth vader, was it from picking up the emperor while he was shooting the lightning ??? was the emperor and his hatred keeping him alive ???

One thing that has really annoyed me about the 3 newest movies is how pussified the Jedis are.

I mean both ObiWan and the other guy fight Darth Maul 2 on 1.

What kinda hero fights a bad guy with another guy ?

Usually its 2 on 1 with the bad guys taking advantage.

Pussies.

Then isnt it kinda cruel for ObiWan to leave Anakin lying there on fire ?

Lost his legs, on fire and the guy just leaves him ?

How about at least pulling him to safety.

Kinda not a nice thing regardless of how bad he is.

think about luke though

he never finishes training but at the beginning of return of the jedi he has control of his powers a lot better than at the end of empire

then he goes to complete his training with yoda but yoda dies so at best he should be like half a jedi

We don't know how much time passed during the movies, and Luke could have grown in the Force during that time, even though he didn't receive training. There's a decent book called Shadows of the Empire which provides a story for that time, and discusses this.

The thing that really bugs me is the time Luke was training during Empire. Given the Han/Leia/Bespin City side story, how long could Luke have been with Yoda. One week, maybe two? How much training could Luke get during that time?

"there is still good in him" is what lets anakin choose to save luke when the emperor is attcking him. this brings him back to the good side of the force. since he spiritually died & went to the darkside, the spiritual form of anakin reverts to the jedi form when the physical part dies.

i admit this a bit of a stretch but i can see his thinking on it.
