View Full Version : I felt good for the Red Sox fans...

There are two parts to this story.

First, on a unusually cold fall night, a Saturday night back in 1986, I remember sitting on the first base line in Shea Stadium. My brother and I were Yankee fans, but we were brought to Shea by my father, who grew up in Long Island. My father had gotten the tickets from a good friend of his, the contractor building our deck, and he couldn't make the game due to a prior engagement.

Even though by brother and I were Yankee fans, we both got swept up by the game.

When that ball rolled through Buckner's legs, I just felt AWFUL. It was a horrible feeling. E-3. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. It was a great game, but the guilt and embarassment of that happening stuck with me for a long time.

Fast forward eight years later. One of the best memories I have growing up is the night the Rangers won the Stanley Cup in 1994.

It was the last time that I hung out with my core group of friends in high school.

We had one last blast, watching the game, and staying up all night, drinking, talking, reminiscing, and then finally leaving one-by-one, like the end of Ocean's 11.

Even though I'm a Yankees fan and I have a great animosity towards the Red Sox, last night gave me the warm feeling that you get, knowing how good some people feel right now. It's something to be savored.

Don't question my fandom for the Yankees because of this; it makes me feel good when people can truly relish a win. Red Sox fans are obnoxious, cruel, and hateful - but they are also passionate, and that's something that can be respected. No other fans who have won the championship in the last 10 years are as passionate as Yankee and Red Sox fans.

So I tip my cap to the Red Sox Nation. But it's the last time it'll happen for a very, very long time.

you aren't a yankees fan if you felt warm last night when the sox won, its that simple. but i know what you're saying about tipping your cap to them, that I most certainly do as well because you have to, they deserved what they got. I'm not attacking your fandom because I know what you feel is more towrds the fans of the sox than the sox themselves, I'm just saying that there's a line between tipping your cap to the better team and feeling warm about them winning.

epsecially after 75% of them bailed after game 3 vs the Yanks...all you heard from them was about the Patriots streak.

Its about intelligence as a fan. When you are beaten, there's nothing wrong with tipping your cap to the other team. In fact, there IS something wrong with NOT tipping your cap. It shows pettiness, ignorance, and makes it seem you feel like because you're Yankee fans, you deserve to win. Which, obviously, you don't.

where did i say we deserved to win. if the Yankees sucked and didn't make the playoffs and i knew they didn't deserve to win anything...i still wouldn't 'tip my cap' to the Red Sox. i just choose not to do it. but if you want to feel like a better person for doing so, then i won't tell you your not.

oh and if by some miracle the Raiders or Broncos win the Superbowl, as a Chiefs fan I won't tip my cap to them either.

maybe i am...but thats why i love sports. i love to hate the other team and really dislike when any team i don't like does good.

its easier for non Yankee fans not to tip their caps when the Yankees win, because they all just fall back on the 'they bought that championship' crap. they never seem to deserve success they only seem to buy success to the Yankee haters.

I think I'm in love with the schedule makers. Is there anything sweeter than Boston unveiling their 2004 WS Champ banner in front of the Yanks? I think not.

Don't question my fandom for the Yankees because of this;

When you post THIS..........
When that ball rolled through Buckner's legs, I just felt AWFUL. It was a horrible feeling. E-3. I wouldn't wish that on anyone

...how can I NOT???

When Buckner lost that ball I was laughing my ass off. Those are the moments Yankee fans love. That Red Sox team had two of the most hated Yankee Rivals at the time...Boggs and Clemens. Granted they were outstanding players but come on! The only way I would feel bad for a Red Sox player would be if their child/spose/family memebr died or came down with some horrible disease. Then I would feel bad and send my sympathy On the field it's war brother.

ok maybe I am not questioning your yankee fandom but I am still scratching my head over this one.

And I am with WJ on this....I love baseball but being a Yankees fan if it is not the Yankees who are in the Series then GO NATIONAL LEAGUE!

I take it you're the type that laughs hysterically whenever you see Theismann's leg collapse under LT.

If you're going to lose, lose like you did to Aaron Boone and Bucky Dent. If you're going to lose, lose in a team effort like The Choke.

Nobody should ever lose a game like that on a mistake that can pinned down to one person, one event. Even though for some fucking reason, Calvin Schilraldi gets a pass for the wild pitch that allowed the Mets to tie the game in the first place.

im a HUGE giants fan, but ya know what, i have always loved McNabb, and right now, id have to tip my cap to him for the ball him and his team are playing.
You may hate the red sox WJ, and thats fine, but anyone with respect for a game has respect for its players, no matter what team they are, and a tip of the cap is respect.
We like boston, we HATE the yankees, but not a one of us doesnt respect what a guy like jeter does, and so when he needs, most of the baseball knowing sox fans would acknowledge it

And there is a HUGE difference between a botched play and an accident that ends a guys career.

i never said i don't respect what these guys do or don't respect them. what i'm saying is as long as they are on a team i strongly dislike (Red Sox/Broncos/Raiders) i choose never to give them a tip of the cap. i know what they did and thats fine, i just feel i don't need to acknowledge it.

if pedro ends up a yankee, unless he is pitching against us, im not gonna be able to wish him bad, i like him, and i love what he did here.
what i was basically sayin is, in this day of sports, its getting harder to hate a whole team because they probably have a few guys that you like. like me, i also pull for atlanta, and i love gary sheffield, and aside from games against boston, was glad to see him doin well.

how can you not wanna see teams led by guys like that do well

and my point, say bernie had ended up with the sox a few years back, would you have automatically started wishing him bad, i doubt it.
Not to jump into this argument midstream, but that might have been bad example. Simply for the fact that the way Bernie handled that contract negotiation from the start was so awful (with the help of that motherf'er Scott Boras) that I, as well as most Yankees fans, were ready to burn Williams at the fucking stake. I was almost disappointed that he made that last minute phonecall to George & the Big Stein ponied up with the cash because I had spent all week preparing myself to hate Bernie more than I hate cancer.

That being said, I agree with your sentiment. You can hate them all you want, but there's no denying how well that played & how much they deserved that Series. You can hate BoyWonder Epstein for winning a World Series before sprouting his first nad-hair, you can hate Lucchino for often acting like a horses ass when it come to the Yankees, you can hate the owner, the organization, etc. But even if it makes your gag reflex kick in immediately, you have to give the Sawx the tip of the cap.

Wow, that hurt.

OK, now I can go back to wishing evil things on them, right?
