View Full Version : Case closed for Scott Peterson?

So far, I'm not impressed with the evidence presented by the prosecution. Yes there's plenty of circumstantial evidence, but nothing really concrete (no pun intended) to convict him of the charges. It's a shame because I do feel that he's guilty as sin, but it just seems that they let the defense have it easy. What I think would have been great to have seen would be Court TV's anchorwoman, Nancy Grace, against Scott Peterson. From what I've read, she has a perfect record of nearly 100 felony convictions at trial - and no losses while she worked as a prosecutor in Atlanta.

What does everyone here think? Do you think we'll have yet another killer walking free?

Court TV gives the most extensive trial coverage during the day, but I'm at work until 6pm usually. From what I hear though, during the closing arguments (which start on Monday, 11/1) they are going to give Nancy Grace her own 2-hour show from 6pm-8pm to review that day's events. That kind of works perfectly for me, and hopefully will give us some insite on what's going on that courtroom.

Speaking as honestly as I can, this is something that really bothers me. Nobody can prove this man killed his wife, yet it's written all over his face. He's going to walk and I don't know who/what to blame because of it.

Yea there's no DNA evidence, but a MOUNTAIN of circumstantial evidence. I really hope to God the jury understands the astronomical odds of a woman disappearing and washing up the same place where the suspect was "fishing" on the day she disappeared (which was Christmas Eve, I think). That alone is pretty damning. Let alone the mistress, plans to flee to Mexico, and drastic change in physical appearance.

Is it better for the family to have him fry or rot in jail for the rest of his natural life?

On the one hand, death is too easy - but the family knows he is off the planet.

on the other - he can get raped and rot in jail, and rot, but the family has to know he lives while their daughter is gone.

dunno.

Saying the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy (tm) wants to hatch a dastardly plan in San Francisco is akin to Yankee fans wondering if they could ask Mayor Menino if they could put a statue of Derek Jeter outside of Fanueil Hall.

Why this case is getting so much press: Scott was good looking, Laci was hot, he was cheating, etc. etc.

Missy hit it right on the head: Peterson would have gotten off if he didn't flee. That's what sealed his fate; all the evidence wasn't airtight at ALL and his run to Mexico is what did him in.

California has only had 10 death sentences carried out since the state resumed executions in 1992. The last man executed, Stephen Wayne Anderson, had been on death row for 20 years before his 2002 death.

I know we draw paralells between this and OJ, and we all know in our hearts that OJ did it. I think its a good sign that these high profile cases work out like that, it sends a message that the rich, famous or attractive people are subject to the same laws as the rest of us and they shouldnt be entitled to any special privelages.

Ron was bringing up the idea of "Circumstantial Evidence" as insufficient, or lacking; this is a misinterpretation of what CE is.

Real Evidence is physical. Weapons, notes, fingerprints...

Direct Evidence is, if believed my the jury, proves a fact without needing to draw inferences. Photographs and Videotape can be two. Eyewitness testimony is a form of direct evidence.

CE requires a jury to make inferences and/or draw conclusions. CE is indeed suffiecient to produce a verdict and conviction in a crim trial. Some attorneys will say they prefer working with CE, to weave a story of the criminal act to the jury.

Really bad example: You go to bed, and you wake up, and theres a foot of snow on the ground. For you, the only evidence that it snowed is circumstantial. There are several other ways the snow could have gotten there.

Enter Occam's Razor: Which scenario takes the least amout of leaps of faith? The neightbors could be elaborately pranking you, aliend could have made it snow, who know? You didnt witness a thing, but there it is, how did it get there? Which of the endless possibilities?

CE can be very very very good evidence.
