View Full Version : Back Surgery Anyone?

Does anyone know of a good procedure to fix a degenerated disc AND a herniation. I was told by a Dr. Steinberger (who is very reputable) that fusion of the vertebr‘ with pins and screws was standard procedure. I'm going for a second opinion and I am open to ALL options and suggestions. I heard from a friend that there was a spongey material that they could replace the disc with, but I have no leads on that material as of yet. Who is a good surgeon in NJ/NY and what is a good procedure? (What do the athletes do?)

Before you answer with a smart-assed remark, please know that as of right now, I take back every bad thing I ever said about anyone, and all the shit jokes and all the gross stories too. I TAKE IT ALL BACK!!! If you help me, I promise to leave you out of my sick board fantasies too.For one week!!!

[Edit:] Vertebr‘!

My Dad had the same problems as you, and he refused to get the operation done because of the great risks involved. Definately get a second opinion. You know what a happy person my father is today. Hahahaha!

be careful about going for surgery.. back surgery is 50/50... you never know if youre gonna turn out worse or better then when u went in.. i had 2 herniated discs in my lower back a few years ago... surgery was an option, but i chose not to get it... make your choice but choose wisely.. good luck...

Read this book before you make a decision:

Healing Back Pain by John Sarno (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0446392308/qid=1091041135/sr=8-2/ref=pd_ka_2/102-8382351-0820956?v=glance&s=books&n=507846)

I know personally three people, and heard of many more, who were told they needed surgery who read this book and have been pain-free ever since. None of them believed in it until they read it and found to their surprise that it worked. Anwyay, won't hurt to give it a read and then make a decision about surgery.

I hardly ever post. When I do it's when I feel I have something important to say. This is one of those times. And don't take back the shit jokes and gross stories. I like them.

Here is a third person account of what happened to my back:

Date: December 16, 2003

Time: Mid morning

The Playas:
*Evel Ed (union worker / crew clown)
*Wally (union lead person / Italian immigrant straight off the boat with a bad accent / a real asshole)
*Kevin (union worker, nicest guy in the world but for the purposes of this story, he will be known as: "The Deaf Black Guy")

*Ed and Kevin are rolling a metal desk down to the junk trailer*

*Here comes fat little fireplug Wally*

Wally: "Hey ED! WHATSAMATTAYOUUUU?!?!?!"

EvelEd: "What NOW?"

Wally: "Whera the fucka were youaa huh???"

EvelEd: "I was IN THE BATHROOM!!!"

Wally: "You a gotta a tell a me whena you goa to the bathrooma, we a worka togeta, we a breaka togeta, we eata togeta, we shita togeta, WE A DO A EVERY TING TOGETA!!"

EvelEd: "Are you going to wipe my ass too?"

Wally: "IMA THE FUCKING LEAD MAN!!! I AM THE FUCKING BOSS, YOU GOTTA DA PROBLEM YOU GO TALKA TO JOE (the REAL boss)"

EvelEd: I will, but first I'm gonna have a smoke"

*Ed pulls out 15 inch cigar*

Wally: "Sonofa @$#%&!a !$#%&a #!$%&!a"

EvelEd: "C'mon Kevin, let's go get this shit done"

Deaf Black Guy: "Muuuhhh Fuuuhhhk" (Kevin hates Wally more than anyone because Kevin knows when Wally is giving him the shit jobs and calls him a "darkie" and "nigga with the r" (racist fucker))

EvelEd: "Let's get this desk over to the junk trailer...That Wally is something else huh?

Deaf Black Guy: "Walla Ahoe Ahoe Walla Ahoe"

EvelEd: "Yes indeed, Wally certainly is an Ahoe"

*Deaf Black Guy makes the sign for bullshit which is crossing the arms, one hand making horns and the other hand flapping*

Deaf Black Guy: "HA HA BUSHI BUSHI HA HA"

EvelEd: "HAW HAW!!!"

*Evel Ed makes the sign for shit which is making a half a fist and moving a couple of fingers down the palm, then signing diarrhea (many fingers wiggling)

Deaf Black Guy: "HAA HAA SHI SHI HAA HAA"

EvelEd: "Ho Ho Ho......Heh Heh Heh......ahhhhh........ohh..........whew........OK ...... here we are, the big trailer of junk"

*Kevin & Ed push the desk across the dock and over the ramp into trailer*

EvelEd: "WHUP! WHOAAAAAAAaaaaaaaa!!!!!!"

*Ed slips on ice that was formed on the floor of the trailer by a roof that had holes and was leaking water. (I have pictures ;p )

*****************WHAM!!!!****************

EvelEd hits the ground like Mike Sharpe slammed him and lays motionless for 5 minutes*

EvelEd: "Uhhhhhh"

Deaf Black Guy: "U auwi u auwi? Fukd dup! Fukd dup!"

*Kevin makes the sign for fucked up which is putting your middle finger and your index finger together and twisting them up*

EvelEd: "Uhhhhhhhh"

Deaf Black Guy: "Fukd dup"

Ilke I lot of people, I agree back surgery is a real gamble (i've seen cousins both do well and poorly with surgery). Iwould get as many opinions as I can, but also look into physical therapy, that may be beneficial as well to you

I hurt my back carring drum equipment a couple of years ago. I couldnt walk. I needed a cane to move. I went on disabilty for a year to rehab it because I wanted to avoid surgery. It got worse so I finally had surgery.

I had a Microdiscectomy done on my L4-5 and L5-S1 discs, they basically go through the spine and shave off the part of the disk that is compressing the spinal cord. It was the best decision I ever made. Im back working pain free and playing drums every week.

They need to remove the disc totally so I'm looking into the artificial disc replacement, but I don't think they do that procedure in the USA as of yet. Physical therapy has not had any long term benefit although the electric stim and ultra sound feel great while they're on. I do alot of stretching and take percoset & valium to relieve the pain. The surgeon wants to remove the disc and put pins & screws in my fused vertebr‘. Second opinion time...
