View Full Version : Why is the Spongebob Movie Rated PG?!

From the Washington Post reviews they list why certain movies have their ratings - here's what they said about The Spongebob Squarepants Movie:

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (88 minutes, at area theaters) is rated PG for some cartoon violence.

Contains cartoon butts, fart and burp humor, an extremely mild obscenity and underwear tug-downs

WTF?

How can we live in a world where a Spongebob movie gets a PG rating?

Probably because David Hasselhoff has a topless scene.

My guess: they through in enough adult references a la Shrek and other 'movies for kids' that zing right past them, but make a parent laugh. Hell some of these movies the adult references are the best part, seeing what pop culture refs they slip in.

Also: Maybe 'G' has a stigma such that the cool kids wont go see it. Probably a weak reason, but...

=

Or, maybe Spongbob lets loose with a couple of "Yo! Asshole!"s in the dialouge.

Because if you watch the movie upside down you'll see Sponge Bob's penis. Damn religious zealots.

Because PG sells more tickets than G. Seriously. I've seen a number of otherwise tame kids movies that will stick in a single curse word or crude act just to get a PG.

Yeah, I know. I blame Spielberg for making ET a "PG" movie by inserting the line "Penis Breath" for no reason other than bumping the rating up.

It just seems wrong that they can't make a cool movie just for kids. One of the cool things about Spongebob is that it's subversivce enough for adults without pandering to adults. It's always been nutty and nutty enough that some parents just don't get it, which the kids love - it's been a show just for them.

The thing is - the movie would still do huge box office had it been G. The marketing campaign has been terrific.

Part of the problem is the ratings board getting more and more conservative over the years - there are G rated movies from the 1970s that could not be made today.

On the flip side - I think it's just as wrong that they won't make movies just for adults - that filmmakers are so scared of making something NC17 that they cave in - only to later release a more explicit product months later on DVD.

Don't forget, E.T. also had the word "shit" in it. The older brother says in midway through.

If you think about it, it's correct. Kids that watch Sponge Bob can't go out on their own. And if the parents leave them in the movie theatre by themselves, isn't that child neglect?

Besides, the movie people want the parents to buy the full admission to increase their profits.

Also, regarding E.T., as the kids are biking away, Tyler says, "We made it! Oh shit."

I can't tell whether you don't understand what the PG rating means or you're making a really stupid joke.

Wow - blocked all of that out.

I'm still not sure it was needed in what should have been a children's movie. Of course, the same time ET came out, the Spielberg produced POLTERGEIST was out, and THAT movie should have been R.

I think it was the following year that Spielberg hit us with the 2nd Indiana Jones and the 1st GREMLINS, which both freaked people out so much that they created the PG-13 rating.

I think that's a testament to the quality of writing in E.T. The dialogue was so well done that if it feels right you don't notice the swearing.

I'm not sure if Poltergeist should have been R. It was sort of a family movie, just a horror one (definitely not for little kids, but okay for 13 and older) but despite the gratuitous face-getting-ripped-off-in-the-mirror scene no one in the movie dies or suffers any kind of real violence. It's mostly just spooky imagery.

Ok...saw the movie. I can sort of understand why it was "PG," but I still believe if the same movie had been made 20 or even 10 years ago it still would have gotten a "G."

And - I stand corrected about my "pandering to adults" comment. The entire final 15 minutes is really for anyone who grew up in the 1980s. From David Hasselhoff, to the musical montage, it was pure fodder for all of the parents who sat through the flick.

FLUFF - check out the closing credit music; Ween's "Ocean Man." I felt like buying a car.

I guess what I meant was that it has all of the elements to be an "R" if they had just gone the extra mile, which they should have. It was definately a good excuse for a "PG-13" though.

This movie looks like the equivalent of a dozen screaming children made of flashlights jumping on my head for two hours.

Why don't they consider squidward nudity? I mean, its practially a pair of balls, with a droopy cock, and some repulsive taint seam on the bottom thats suppose to be his mouth.
