is it just me, or does every bad sci fi movie start this way? (http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/space/01/11/deep.impact/index.html)
maybe its just me, but blowing up a comet doesnt sound like a really good idea...

"The interesting part of this mission is that we don't really know what to expect," said Don Yeomans, a senior research scientist with the Deep Impact mission at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, JPL. "But no matter what happens, we'll observe the phenomena."
That troubles me.

It doesnt bother me, but Im hoping that the "football stadium" size blast crater doesnt shatter the comet so that on its next pass around the sun, and doesnt increase the possibility that fragments of it are altered or which could increase the odds of a collision with the Earth. From what I gather about how comets are likely composed, its likely a large rock with an icy covering of frozen gasses, as opposed to a solid ball of ice as some use to suspect. Im assuming that they are intending to blow some of the icy gasses off it and view the material below to confirm that with this mission. Wheres Mike Teacher? This is his sort of topic!

If all goes well, the mission's two spacecraft will tag team Comet Tempel 1 on July 4, with Impactor set to slam into the icy wanderer while Flyby looks on.
So fucking hot!
