Since XM is in money-saving mode, I could see that Steve would become the Executive producer with a bump in pay, and everyone gets more responsibility with the "Elimination of the position".

Speculation on my part, purely.

I don't think Rick will come back, as the money in San Francisco is probably too good, and he's also got a past history with Opie.

Don and Mike have gone through many a staff person on the air, and with the exception of their last producer (B.A.) they have always rolled with never mentioning it ever again. If the person is brought up by a caller they address the person isn't there and move on, and maybe throw in a sly dig, but most long time listeners know that if someone isn't mentioned, it's for a reason - and the reason isn't because they split on good terms.

The reason this is all relevant to this is that recently they mentioned - not by name, but everyone know who they were talking about - two producers who tenure with them did result in litigation with them and the station. While they said they can't legally talk about it, they were able to talk about what happens when soemone who works for you shits on you, blames you and sues you. To people who knew who they were talking about, it made for interesting radio, because one of the people had been with the show for at least 15 years (right out of high school), and the other person got married to the other one.

Ultimately, though, it doesn't matter - it's The Don and Mike Show - like it's the Opie and Anthony Show - like it's the Ron and Fez Show - like it's the Howard Stern Show. Beyond the names before "Show," no one person on staff should be considered unexpendable, and people should realize that there will be lots of things that hosts as employers will not share with the audience when they are in the role as simply hosts. I don't think it makes any of them hypocites.

Curt brings up an interesting point. Another reason (and the actual REAL reason why Spaz has been banned from Wackbag discussions) is because Kevin allegedly threatened litigation against the show.

So even though it's salacious reasons people want to believe why he's not mentioned, the alleged legitimate reason is because O&A don't want the headache. It's probably the reason why you don't hear Spaz bits on best-of, and don't use the Spaz drops. Not because of Ant's ego.

Good point about steve becoming the exec producer. That would have to be temporary though, because does steve really have the connections to book guests?

You know who would be a good choice, Rory. I know he is with Sirius, but that could be cool. Maybe he would want to come to XM.

It makes sense that he would quit over money. I think he saw O&A and Jimmy making more and more as they resigned with XM and then the CBS deal and maybe he felt like he was not properly compensated. He did have it out with Jim over Jimmy constanlty joking he was a millionare. That seemed to really get to Ben. Opie for about a week was on a tear about how the guys all said they were underpaid. He kept saying "well just quit and try to get a new job to see what you are really worth". Maybe Ben took his advice. If he left on his own, I wish him the best of luck. If he was fired for the incident, well then that just sucks.

And when somone was in there were 3 defined people: opie, anthony and whomever, now that jimmy is on all the time its like 3 jimmy's especially with anthony he acts just like jimmy and almost tries to impress jimmy. All the bad shit they say about people being "too cool for the room" they are exactly like that with radio and want people to act just like them or they're not funny. I still listen to the show not as much as i used to, i guess for all the audio which is like the 85% of the show anymore.

The gentleman's name is David Draiman. He's probably upset because nu-metal has been done since 2002, and Disturbed's subsequent albums have all sucked.

And for the record, I wasn't attacking Jimmy for Christ's sake. Settle down. I was just saying their show is just as funny when he's not on. It's also a very different show.

I turned it off too. There's something to be said for a pre-interview. When they do real interviews, not aimed at eventually ripping on the person, it can be very cringe-inducing. The exceptions are comedians, with whom they always tend to do a good job, and anyone with whom they are famaliar (Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs comes to mind).

I thought it was a little akward at first because Opie kept trying to jump in and got talked over and then just made wacky voices, but Anthony killed w/ his howard impersonation. The morse code line was great. I know I've heard it all before, but they said on the show yesterday that regular listeners would know most of what they were going to discuss on the show. The interview was to expose them to people that don't listen to the show.

And yea, they looked hella nervous

just thought Opie didn't talk

That made the interview great. Anthony is the personality/storyteller...

Because of time constraints, one person needed to be the real voice for the two of them - I wouldn't be surprised if this was discussed before-hand with them. I thought they did fine - it was a nice primer to refresh people's memories why they should or might know them (fired, sex in church, satellite, back to terestrial, hate Howard Stern). If there are future appearances, they can actually be more relaxed and do stuff that fans of the show aren't sick of hearing repeated.

Ant's Howard impression may have been the biggest pop last night to someone seeing them for the first time (all the fans are so use to they forget how effective that little bit is when you first hear it - it is, after all, one of the things that ultimately convinced a lot of old Stern fans to turn on him at one point or another (imo)). The fact that Dave laughed several times made it more comfortable - it wasn't a hostile environment, although everyone knows it is (and always will be) a very pro-Howard show, and that made it better.

It's good for them that they were on - ultimately, I don't know if it pursueded too many new people, or became the talk around the old water cooler with people seeing them for the first time. If all you knew of them were that they were outrageous and they got fired from places, seeing them come on and not bring anything more outrageous than just bash Howard, unfortunately also might reinforce what Stern says about all other radio shows. And regardless of how much they insist that they really do hate Howard, to most people who don't give a shit it all might just come across as more "carney talk."

CBS needs O&A to do tremedous, and Letterman is a company man, but bottom line is Howard has been doing Dave's show for over 20 years at this point - Letterman gave Howard his first national break. Dave also appeared as himself in "Private Parts" (something Stern forgot about the last time he was on, which was very funny). The last time he was on he was given three segments (something only an Oprah or a Bill Clinton gets). I still think their biggest edge is to cultivate Conan.

Dave's whole "defense of howard" bit was kind of tiresome. It was unecessary and felt like Dave was just trying to cover his ass for the next time he has to see Howard. O&A were probably forced on Letterman. It could have been contentious (Dave's pooh-poohing satellite, the howie stuff) but O&A were gentlemen.

UnknownPD wrote:
Dave's whole "defense of howard" bit was kind of tiresome.
Why?!

If you watch Dave long enough that he doesn't even give people he likes a free pass to say things unchallenged (look back at Stern's last appearance when he railed against Les Moonves - Dave didn't let that go). O&A attached themselves to Howard in the public (not the other way around), through their talks, attacks and fans stalking the studio - all Letterman did last night was attempt to see how much of a bit this really was, he got his answer, and he made it known his respect for the man - at the same time, he didn't show any disrespect to O&A - it wasn't the awkwardness that happened the times he's had on Bill O'Reilly or that one time Rush Limbaugh was on - and that speaks volumes to O&A and their ability to rise up and make it a comfortable, funny bit, as it does to Dave who seemed to enjoy their appearance. It really could have gone wrong, but both camps knew the roles that was expected and they did. Next time out, unless there is something specific to address, I doubt Howard is even brought up.

I think a lot of it had to do with Opie being easy to dislike when you first hear him speak... I know when I first listened to the show, I hated to hear Opie speak, until I understood the role that he plays. Now, I think they would be hard pressed to have a show without each other. I think having Anthony handle the questions was the right move, he seems to express his thoughts better and he has more couth when addressing certain subjects (all of which were that type of subject discussed on the show). I think they did a great job marketing the show on both platforms. Ant really summed it up well about the differences between the FM show and the XM show. I think it was a great first time.
