View Full Version : My Hands Actually Froze Today

That's right, froze. Not like they were so cold that they went numb, that would have been a relief. Nope, my hand were actually frozen.

You see before leaving the office today my boss recommended I wear a pair of latex gloves under my single layered cloth gloves. She told me it was a little trick to keep them warm. Oh how wrong she was.

So I went out with the latex gloves under my little cloth gloves and at first I was glad to have them on. Well after about 20 minutes with the latex gloves on my hands started to sweat, about 20 minutes after that...the sweat started to freeze! Leaving my hands frozen in a thin layer of ice. I had to move my hand to break the ice layer and remove the glove. The rest of my day was filled with ways of trying to get feeling back into my finger tips as I walked in 10 degrees of hell. At one point I went into a store and got 6 packs of matches and made a small fire in the relay box to warm myself up.

It's fucking COLD outside!!!

glad to hear it's nothing too serious. you would think the sweat wouldn't freeze due to the salt but then again i'm no fucking scientist

this reminds me of an 'expedition' documentary i saw fascinated me to no end and continues to do so

sad to say these guys didn't make it back. they had to walk 800 miles, dragging sleighs up and down ice hills that 'due to the conditions' was like dragging the sleighs through sand, in -40 degree temperatures

You know, Pants, I was thinking about you today, when I went down the block to pick up my Meatball Parm.

I was thinkin' * Damn, what a horrible-ass day to be a fucking letter carrier.*

And now for a patented PanterA's God-Hates-Me story.

Monday, I took the wife's van in to the shop for a scheduled motor-mount replacement.
Had the job done, paid over $150 for the privilege.

Brought the van home (luckily no school) Started my Cadillac for the first time in three days, parked the van behind the Caddy, and went about my nightly routine.
This morning; ran the Caddy again, just because it doesn't respond well when the freakin' temperature is 2!!

Started the van, and there was no fucking steering.
I muscled it into the street and saw a pond of steering fluid in my driveway. (motor-mount and steeering fluid hose connection, another story for another day)
Well, I drove the bitch to the station with no steering (luckily only about 2 miles).

My mechanic orders a new sterring line from Ford.
Buys some kind of flanging tool to do the job "right".
I get home from the office at 4:30 with the wife's van.
She gets in said van at 4:40 to leave for work and screams "I can't steer the Fucking thing!"
I check the driveway again, and there is another gallon of fluid spilled all over.
So now, the van is parked in the street with no steering ability, the wife has my 42 year old Cadillac, which doesn't like sub-freezing temps, at her job(she is going to call me on how to get it started when the temp. is FUCKING 2)

Now, I have to drive the van back to the shop, with no steering in the AM, have her take the kids to school in the Caddy(which also has steering issues)

don't mean to step on your thread, dude.
But you have enough tales of woe.

Time for hottub to vent!!!

I take it that it's not a good time of year to be a mailman. The moment I read you say you were going to put latex gloves on I began to cringe. I just knew your hands would sweat and then you'd be in trouble. That's some trick alright.

Not only that, but ice-covered trash cans are even MORE painful when they slam into you, frozen banana peels are even MORE slippery, and teenage joyriders driving on frozen roads are even MORE likely to hit you!

My advice?

Hibernate.

QUICKLY.

she has to be the dumbest person ever. NEVER wear more than one pair of gloves or socks. the extra one makes it tighter, allowing less circulation the hands or feet, actually making them colder

Liners are fine if you size them properly, and latex actually would work to keep you warm so long as it's not too tight and your gloves are warm enough to keep the sweat that is going to collect inside from freezing. It's kind of the point of wearing something non-breathable. Mountaineers do it a lot with VBL (vapor barrier liner) socks, or if you're doing the ghetto version, bread bags on your feet. However if you do it too much and your feet stay damp too long (from the sweat), you'll get trench foot. yum!

Bobby, Id look into getting a pair of these..

http://www.wesellcrewsaver.co.uk/product-pages/product-pics/superstretch.jpg

They are neoprene "ice fishing" gloves. They have them in Walmart near the hunting/fishing section and they are like $10. Theyll keep you warm, have great grip, and are waterproof. When I was a meter reader, guys would wear them while walking their books and we had to brish snow off meters and reach inside snow covered bushes and shit. They are cheap enough that you can get a bunch and keep them in different places so youll always have a pair.

Blackbird, I have gloves, I just have to wear thin ones for when I'm working cause I need to go through mail. Those seem a bit thick.

BTW today was a shitty day to be outside. You breath in and the air is like freezing your trachea causing it to close up on you. It was a really shitty day today.
