What a game!  Pedro pitched great except for the 3 wild pitches that led to the 2 runs against him.  Mets come back to take the lead in the bottom of the 8th but Looper blows it in the top of the 9th.  Mets win it in the bottom of the 9th thanks to Victor Diaz (who always seems to be in the middle of rallies) and Ramon Castro.

Anyone puzzled by the Josh Beckett story on today's game? He was upset that Reyes swung too hard?? Wtf? isn't that part of hitting? I've never heard that before. I hope Pedro gets a crack at Beckett later in the year.

I really disagree with that. Injuries have really kept him back these
last 2 years. I think hes still capable of putting up over 25 homers
and 80 RBI...but not the type of numbers he did a few years ago. If
they can trade him for some relief or something thatd be great...

I hear its already that time of the year where they start shopping around Piazza...think theyll actually do it this season, as opposed to the last 2?It is more true this year since his contract is up, but I think it would be a mistake. They should have Piazza retire with the Mets and he is more than capable of hitting at least .290 with 25HR's and 80-90 RBI's. Those are big numbers to lose, and who will replace those numbers?? I cant think of anyone on the top of my head either. I would like to have the Mets build from the inside up, but when a good trade comes grab it. Just dont mortgage your future doing (Ahem, Scott Kazmir).Lets have at least one legend retire with the Mets. They fucked that up with Seaver, Gooden and Straw. I know the last two I shall hear some flack for, but if the Mets did some actual managing of a problem sort of the way Steinbrenner has. Steinbrenner still is a douche at times, but he does give guys second chances and they perform magnificently as a result.

Gooden was given a second and third chance by the Mets.  He was suspended in '87 and then again in '94.  After the '94 season he became a free agent and before the Mets started negotiating with him he tested positive again and was suspended for the entire 1995 season.  And Strawberry never needed a second chance from the Mets as he was never in trouble with the league until after he left.  Strawberry turned the Mets down and signed with the Dodgers because it was his hometown team and they gave him a big contract. And Steinbreener just has a hard on for the '86 Mets. <img src="http://scripts.cgispy.com/image.cgi?u=boondocksaint" border="0" />

I must admit, I was somewhat down on Pedro after his season last
year. Not to the point where I thought hed have a season like Glavine
did, his first year in NY, but I definitely didnt think hed be able to
put up the types of numbers he did 2-3 years ago...so far, Ive been
very pleasantly suprised.  Leads the league in strikeouts, an ERA in the low 2s, and gives the Mets a chance to win every time out there...

Although Matthews hadnt put up the best of numbers by far, Id rather they have sent down Aybar. I really wanna see what Ring can do. In 9 innings pitched this year in Triple A Norfolk, he's only allowed 1 run.

I think it is even more hysterical that people think he's just going to "get back" what he had in Atlanta.  His last couple years there were nothing special, and you can't "get back" 10 years on your arm.  You also can't "get back" those outside strikes he used to get, partially thanks to Maddox. Eh, no biggie, we needed at least 1 from the Braves, and I figured our best shot was Heilman stealing 1.  Glavine is 1-7 against Atlanta, and Pedro was owed 1 by the Karma police.

Your 40 year old is locked in for 3 more years at 19 million or so. We get rid of ours after this year I believe, if not, only 1 more year, and its 10-11 mill. Plus, Tom Glavine is much prettier than Randy Johnson.  Unit is one ugly motherfucker, ala Willie McGee

Another great outing by Pedro last night.  And Reyes had a great game.  Watching him score from first on a single was crazy.  Beltran hit an absolute BOMB off the scoreboard and Cliff Floyd is still one of the hottest hitters in baseball.  I wish all the games could be like that.

however, need to bitch about the schedule. A few years ago, when they
decided to weigh the schedule within the division, it seemed like a
good idea. But now it just seems like they are playing the same fucking

Is it possible to move a starter down in the rotation like how they moved piazza down because he ain't doin shit? Shockingly, Aaron Heilman should be our #2 starter right now, not counting Benson. You know, i actually felt bad for Glavine the first couple years he was here because with every loss 300 wins looked further and further away. But now? Fuck him. At least act like you're trying out there. I don't give a shit that Shea has Questec. This ain't Atlanta and you're not getting a stike called 8 inches off the plate.

Floyd has been fuckin incredible this year. I kinda feel bad for
wanting him gone this winter. Hes playin the best baseball of his
career and is on pace to have an MVP year...then again, ARod is on pace
to hit 60 homers and drive in 165...

Mets playing competitive ball and the yankees just pile up the losses. Another thing that makes me smile is all these "younger" yankee fans (bandwagon jummpers, post 96 era) can't believe the team is this bad. This is the first dose of reality these fans have had in over 10 years. I guess Looper blowing that save on opening day isn't so funny anymore is it?

reyes either. i'll trade him in 1 second for soriano. and am i the only

Johnson just doesnt scare me as much as he did last year. When he was
in Arizona last season he was absolutely dominating. This year, he
simply hasnt been the same pitcher. I mean, he lost to fuckin Tampa Bay
this year...gave up 6 runs...I mean, Im not saying he isnt good
anymore. In his last 4 starts he hasnt allowed more than 3 runs. Im
just saying I think the Mets can beat him, especially with Benson on
the mound today. GO METS GO!

Every time we bring in somebody big, free agent or trade, they struggle for a while when they get here. Trade-Clemens/Big Unit/A-Rod/Knoblauch Free agents-Giambi/Matsui/Mussina I still think Randy Johnson will be fine. He just needs to relax.

From what I gathered from mets.com, Matsui hurt his neck sleeping and

He playing great in the outfield, is batting .300 with 6 HRs and  26 RBIs.  Not MVP caliber, but surely better than almost all of the other Met signings of the past.  Plus this is a very young team.  Have a little fucking patience as they mesh.

One of the best pitchers who ever lived. Look up his #s, they're all
off the charts. Has better career #'s than Seaver, Bob Gibson, Greg
Maddux, etc. Compares favorably with Kofax, Clemens, Randy Johnson in
their primes. Plus, he's done it all in the Steroid/offensive explosion
era. Amazing.

so i have to watch ishii, and zambrano basically because the front office is too fucking hard headed to admit they made a mistake with kazmir for zambrano. and the zenmaster peterson thinks heilman should still be in AAA. I still really like Randolph. I still love Peterson. And while I
hated the Zambrano move, Kazmir is  2-5 with a  4.69 ERA and
leads the league in walks. I think they need to send Ishii to the pen,
or better yet to Norfolk and put Heilman into the rotation, at least
until Trachsel comes back.  When is Fortunato going to be able to come back?

yeaar hes just been a .230 hitter with some pop, losing him isnt that
bad when you got Brian Daubach and Chris Woodward there to back him up.

It's funny, Kazmir is pitching perhaps his best game as a pro, and Zambrano is leading/pitching well against Philly.  Only the six though for Kaz and he hasn't been throwing a lot of strikes.  But against the swing happy Jays you don't have to.

It doesnt matter how theyre doing. Fact of the matter is, if Kazmir
were here, a) he'd be kicking ass with Rick Peterson as his pitching
coach, and b) I wouldnt have to hear him brought up everytime someone
mentions Victor Zambrano. Let it go. Theyve also traded away A.J.
Burnett, Preston Wilson, Jeff Kent, and Melvin Mora. Get over it
already. Zamrano has been terrific and has really exceeded my
expectations. He should probably have about 12 wins right now but the
Mets never score when hes on the mound.

You're right Snoogs, Kaz is young but UNPROVEN.  As it pans out right now, Zambrano was worth it.  Revisit the trade a few years later to see who really got the best of the trade.  But as it stands now, advantage Mets.  It's amazing how much the Met fans talk like Kaz is a god and Zambrano walks sooo many batters and has zero control.  Now we look at the stats after half a year and it looks like Kaz walks more than Zambrao hands down.  Sure, I know, he's young.  But most prospects turn into mid to shit level players more often than the stud everyone makes Kaz out to be without any reasons, yet.  Being a lefty in this league makes a lot of scouts salivate way too early.

What a great sweep for the Mets. Took out the first place Padres and
now they move on to 2 considerably worse teams in the Dodgers and the

Great win today. Got a couple of tought series on the road. Rockies,
though not a great team by any stretch, are tough at home and have an
awful ballpark to pitch in. Plus with the Mets and their "small ball"
type system, arent exactly fit for Coors field. The Astros have been
playing some solid baseball and have 2 of the best pitchers in the
league. Figure if we can win 4 of the next 7 games thatd be great.

Mets.com is reporting that the Mets are interested in trading for Jeff
Kent. Aquiring a guy like that to play second and possibly occasionally
at first would be huge. I would imagine Braden Looper would be involved
in a trade like that. Of course this is just a rumor even if mets.com
is reporting it. Its a week before the deadline so these things are a
dime a dozen at this point...

Thats because hes a ginormous asshole and everyone dislikes him. Still,
the numbers are there and they werent in his first go around with the
Mets, just like Melvin Mora. Hed be a huge boost for the offense which
is definitely lackluster at times. Small ball is great and all but you
need a big RBI guy with pop in his bat. Beltran aint doin it, Floyd
seems to be coolin down, Wright is streaky...

As much as Id love to have Soriano, pitching wins championships.
Zambrano has been very solid this year and Heilman has been terrific.
If you trade them 2, you're stuck with Ishii as your number 4 guy and a
choice of calling up Seo or going with 4 starters until Trachsel gets
back. Also recalling an inexperienced Bell or Ring and giving Graves a
bigger role. Minaya knows what hes doing though, I trust he'll make the
right move, whatever it may be.

this is what I hate about being a mets fanwe sweep the 1st place padres, win 2 out of 3 from a mediocre dodger team and lose 2 out of 3 to the rockies the worst team in the NL and only 2 losses away from being the worst team in baseball.as for the soriano trade it's being reported that the rangers won't even think about trading him to the mets without reyes being part of the deal with at least lastings milledge and others (heilman, zambrano).A few years ago they wanted reyes in any soriano deal, i'm glad they didn't do it then and I hope they don't do it now.

contract. The Red Sox wanted more and more and as far as prospects go
the Mets werent willing to give up more than Midledge and the kid from

deadline's over and no trade but the deal could still go through if all players involved clear waivers, but that's unlikely to happen as I'm sure someone would pick up Baez or even Cameron.I would have loved to have manny, but he might not be as good in the outfield and his production might be less in a pitcher's park like shea.

well i would have to root for the nationals because we are 3 games behind houston and 1 behind the nationals if houston wins and we win then we would move ahead of them(the nats) but houston would still be 3 ahead of us butif the nats win we stay even with them if we win and the astros will be closer and we also have 9 games left against the nats and we won't see the astros again this year unless we both make the playoffs

I heard about it so I was pretty much prepared for it watching the game
replay but that was absolutely brutal. I dont think Id ever seen
anything quite like that. Watching it again Id have thought that
Beltran would come out the worst because Cameron is bigger and appeared
to be going at full speed, and at the point of collision Beltrans head
snapped to one side and I thought that was it. Cameron broke his nose
and both cheek bones as well as a concussion. As far as I know Beltran
only came out with facial abrasions and a sore shoulder. I doubt
Beltran will miss more than a few games. From a fans perspective Im not
upset about losing Cameron cause you got Diaz just waiting for another
shot. But from a human perspective I really feel bad for the guy. You
hate to see that happen to anyone, especially on a baseball field where
its more unexpected as opposed to football or actual "contact" sports.

Absolutely.  The centerfielder always gets priority on all plays in the outfield so even if Beltran didn't call off Cameron, Cameron should have given way and backed up the play.  This is stuff you learn in Little League.  I'm tired of seeing too many Major League players get injured or make the blooper reel because they forget the basics of the game.

Theres no way they can do that. Actually, with the success that Seo has
had, and the type of manager Randolph is I think theyre gonna go with a
6 man rotation, at least for the time being. I also wouldnt be suprised
if its Zambrano that gets knocked out of the rotation later because hes
just not looking as good as he had been. Or maybe Trachsel, who the
hell knows really. Seo has been unbeliavably good this year. Kudos to
Peterson for finally convincing him to addthat curveball to his
repetoire, it was killer tonight.

i said it in another thread and I'll say it again hereif the team that just won the world series with you as their closer (marlins 03) doesnt want you back that should tell you to stay away.I know franco and benetiez were heart attack closers but for some reasonlooper seems worse and blows more saves

.5 back. and from here on out randolph should pinch hit for floyd everytime he comes up in a pressure spot, especially with the bases loaded. he tries to hit a 5 run homerun everytime.

Nice win, but dam is it tight in that race!  Long fucking way to go with that many teams alive and right on the door step.  The Mets have a pretty tough upcoming schedule too.  I hope they pull it off.  I hear Steve T. might be gone before the waiver trade deadline is up Wednesday night.  Boston is interested in him and is thinking of moving a first base prospect.  Just rumors so far, but worth mentioning.

unfortunately the last few times pedro has pitched he has pitched great but the mets always find a way to lose it and it looks like the mets are probably out of the wild card race but we still have a chance since we have 6 games left against the nats, 3 against the phillies, 3 against the marlins,3 aginst the braves which we will prob lose,and  2 against the rockies to end the season.so there's hope but I just don't have faith right now.

One word sums it all up.  ACK!!!!!!!The amazing thing is they are going to have almost the same record as last year. Two weeks ago I thought that was impossible. Hey, nobody tanks like the Mets. At least they are good at something.

i know blooper is our closer but at this point i would rather have tug mcgraws corpse savinggames for the metsyet another blown save for blooper.. please just dont use him anymore at least benetiez onlyblew saves against the braves and yanks this guy just plain sucks now
