I don't pray, but I wish him well.

I cannot tell you how sorry I feel for the Pope. He can't just fucking step down, so the guy has to suffer through Masses and other shit until he dies? Jesus Catholics, get SOMETHING right. Let old Popes retire!!!

Great Point Moe. He should be allowed to live his final days in peace.

For real Kevin. Why should he have to suffer with Parkinson's and general old age right in front of us all? Reagan retired from public life when he was getting sick. We still have that strong image of him in our heads, not a drooling, dying old man.

Letting the Pope retire would help retain a healthy, vibrant image of him in people's memories.

absaloutly Moe. I dont care who he is he is a human being and should be treated like one. Letting him suffer like that is very cruel. People will survive if the Pope steps down. Its not like he is doing anyone a disjustice. He is not saying im stepping down beacuse i do not belive anymore. He would step down beacuse he can't do it anymore. And there is NO shame in that. We all get to that point.

While I agree with you both, I think doing something about all the touchy feely priests should kinda come before the Pope and his health. Truth is, I'm doubting the Pope makes too many decisions, rather is more of a puppet for behind the scenes people. Much like our president's. (No, I'm not just talking about Georgie, all of em)

We are not talking about making decisions Tool. We are talking about him having to physically get up and do all the other things like conduct Mass and prayer and announcements

God lives in Garwood, NJ. I'm way closer to god than the pope.

My only hope is that the next pope has a system of morals grounded somewhat in the 21st century mold. I'd also like a billion dollars.

It is getting to the point where you will see a Pope retire. We live so much longer now that it is becoming unrealistic for a Pope to die before he retires. This Pope should retire, and many in the Church have been urging him to, but he has refused so far.

Moe raises an interesting point here.

It's important to remember that while the Pope is the head of the Roman Catholic Church, he is also the head of the world's smallest sovereign nation -- The Holy See.

Granted this nation is the size of a golf course, and is an oasis within Italy, but most nations have mechanisms in order to ensure the quick and orderly transfer of power. Or, a way for a leader who can't effectively discharge his duties a way to resign or cede power temporarily. Our own 25th Amendment is a good example of this.

Given the fact that this Pope was stricken with a slow, degenerative disease that affected his ability to effectively discharge his duties as both Head of Church and Head of State, perhaps John Paul II's example will give Vatican leaders reason to rethink or revamp their system of succession -- or at least allow imfirmed Popes a means to step down.

Not gonna happen, unfortunately. Badorties is right about this Pope being a stubborn old codger (being of Slav heritage myself, I can say that most of us do have the stubborness gene and it isn't usually recessive) but it is also a theological point in Roman Catholicism that unearned suffering is redemptive, bringing the sufferer closer to God spiritually. That may have been a fine philosophical position when you couldn't do much to help physically back in the day, but I think that now that we have a lot of tools (drugs, medical procedures) to alleviate suffering, the moral position is not to be stingy with 'em. Hell, I'll take a morphine drip... and I don't have to be dying either - I'll take one now!

Of course, I'm probably not on the short list to be Pope.

The pope does not want to step down. If he did, he would have wrote that into church law. When you're pope, you are pope till you die; that means you are the rock of the church; you are the sucessor to Saint Peter. To retire, and to allow someone else to come in, would be an instance of two popes. You can't say that the retired Holy Father is now less holy because he stepped down. He has to keep that power till the end, and pass it on through the selection by the cardinals.

When you read about how the pope requested to hear about Jesus' final days, it should make you more aware that this man hopes to understand th suffering and pain that Jesus Christ went through during his final hours on earth. He is willing to suffer, this is no mere man. He forgave the dude who shot him, for christ sake.

All that and he couldn't put fannies in the seats.

I admit the guy had charisma and he did bridge gaps, but the simple truth is the church he took over is in bad shape today. The American Church has to sell of property to pay claims from the sex scandals. In New York City alone 24 Catholic Schools will be closed permanently in June because of declining enrollment. There are not enough priests to go around and churches that used to packed on Sundays sit mostly empty. The church as a whole is an irrevelant shell of its former self and at least part of that blame needs to be placed at the door of its leader.

Right now at the time of his death I guess its okay to only look at the good, but I do think history will judge JPII more critically than we do.

I was raised catholic and was personally affected by the scandals to hit the church. I thought the Pope could have and should have done more, but he buried his head in the sand and the church will never be the same.

What, do you think that every time a new pope comes out, they re-write all the laws, and start pulling shit out of their ass?

Do you even remember what every single pope was like before this one? Shit, Pope John Paul II was more involved with the world than any previous pope. No other pope ever visited the White House; no other pope gave a fucking shit. This pope traveled more than any other pope, he spent 3 years combined out on tour. He spread the word, he kept to the message. A good pope doesn't succomb to the whims and desires of the modern era; in other words, just because a bunch of people start sucking each other's dicks doesn't mean the Pope's gonna change what has been not just Catholic, but a Judeo Christian belief that men have penises, women have vaginas, and that those two oughta go together. The pope's job is to be St. Peter, not be some fucking politician, which is what everyone who ISN'T catholic seems to think the pope is. He's not the fucking president, he's the unbroken successor to Saint Peter here on Earth. His job is to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. Don't give me this shit about how he failed in his job because the church still considers homosexuality is a sin, (omg global crisis) or because women aren't included in the church as much. Look at the history of the Catholic Church for the past 2000 years. Shit, we've only been allowed to say mass in fucking English for less than 50 years now! Give the fucking Pope a break; if you have a set of values for your religion, you don't go around changing them every time a new Pope puts on a miter.

Everyone oughta be looking at the things this pope did. This Pope went out, and spread the word of love and peace, and called for the end of every single war, and the values of every single human life. He preached the good word til the day he died, and he suffered in the end as his own way of becoming more humble and bringing himself closer to Jesus Christ.

Now, I may not be a practicing Catholic, but I find it insulting to think that this Pope failed in any possible way, when you can look at over 400 other popes who did absolutue shit compared to this one. This pope ranks next to fucking Constatine, Peter, Linus, as one of the greatest leaders the Church ever had.
