View Full Version : I am the guy who takes away AIM

Thats right, throw stones.
I feel really bad for having to do this, but I work for a small company and I am basically the only technical guy here. They have no restrictions on anything internet based. No logging, no accountability. I have even on occasion clicked on some of the NSFW links. You know why, cause over here it is safe.
Anyway my boss asked me a few weeks ago if I could block AIM because to many people were abusing it. I said I would try. I did not realize how hard it would be to do. I finally figured it out, and at lunchtime today, AIM and AOL will be blocked from all our company computers.
I feel bad because I know it can be a stress reliever, but I had to do it. Does anyone here have this blocked at their job?
I am waiting for the phone calls to start askign me why they can no longer use AIM.

As a guy who needs his workers to be on the phone working, I applaud you. That shit takes up too much of peoples day. If email isn't enough, pick up the phone and call the person. Damn, I'm getting irritated just thinking about it.
Good for you.
EDIT-- Nicky, how'd you do it? I need to hire you!.

Eh, they tried locking AIM down where I work. When it stops working, I just look for another port or proxy. I can't use it at one location where I work because I have to use someone else's machine and I won't install the program to use it, but other than that, there's always a way...

at work i'm filtered through 'websense' that blocks any questionable website and any web based e-mail ...
although, i can use AIM ... but the local techs get real pissy about it, so i dropped it ...
my chick is trying to get it purged from her office, there're little lovebirds a few desks away messaging each other all day ...
any advice ...?

I have never even heard of this AIM express, I am researching it now.
It was a PAIN IN THE ASS to block. I had the same problem as tool. these people are supposed to be either answering calls or inputting medical claims. there is no reason for them to even be on the net, let alone AIM.
Tool - I am always for hire! I did it by blocking the IP Addresses of the Login servers. There were 5 as of now, and they change all the time, so i will have to keep up with it.
I did not block ports or proxies
I was smart enough to allow myself to still use it, but no one else!

JPM Nick here is the web address for aimexpress if it helps.
http://www.aim.com/get_aim/express/aim_expr.adp?aolp=
See the advantage of AIM express is that nothing is downloaded onto your computer. Hence why no computer realizes to block it, because no offense Techs think they know all the loopholes and will either block programs being able to download onto comp or will block the Aim website. Ok enough of my rant. Hope that helps you out. Damn employees trying to talk to friends and not work at work.

Thanks for the links. I have since blocked 3 AIM Express sites also. The people I work with pretend to be stupid when it comes to computers, but they will find a way to try and get this to work. I will monitor their emails to see if they are complaing. If I come across any naked pics they send of themselves, they will promptly be posted in the NSFW thread.

Hey, from someone who doesn't work at a desk, fuck them in the ear.
They got if fucking GOOD already. They're not working outside. They're not lifting or lugging anything. So they can't AIM their fucking buddies? Deal with is assholes. Do some work for a change.
I do not type this to disparage office workers, just to piss on anyone who may complain that they can't use AIM from their climate controled office space.

They blocked AOL at Bell Labs on the LAN lines but if I really need to get on to AOL I can just plug into a POTS line and dial up. A buddy of mine uses UNIX to bypass all the firewalls too. I don't know how though. Something about dialing to his home computer?

Its kind of like a VPN. he dials into his house, which is allowed by the firewall, then uses that connection for AIM. Thats also a good way to check out porn if you are not allowed to

I keep trying to get proxy authorization just to be able to get online at work, not for any messenger, just so I can see whats going on in the news. Head on over to my building on Jay St and hook me up! I can sometimes bug this management babe to log me on, and I know there are a few people in my office that have access, but I wish I could do it on the up and up.

And every Red Sox fan is determined to pretend that this never happened, and that it didn't taint the moment even a little bit ... so it wasn't a huge deal.

yea it really depends on what you do. when i was dispatching, id have to be on the comp to look at rides, but i also worked nights, so it was usually pretty slow. i used to post on the board, use AIM, go outside for "breaks" because i could. but i would stop doin that shit when it would get busy or if it was early in the day when other people could see it and get mad.
at the same time if i was on a comp and i was supposed to be doin data entry or something, and was sitting there talkin on AIM with papers on my desk i had to type, then id be an asshole. so good for you

AIM's been successfully integrated into the workflow at my office - we send a lot of links back and forth and communicate with people off site - so it's not a problem having it on the computer. And everyone ends up having personal conversations on it as well.

Same here. I introduced AIM at my old job and it made an effective call screening tool, if I took a call and my boss was on another line. It also helps with sending inter-office links.

Just open a free account at freeshell.org, telnet to their unix server, and use "talk"
Nobody checks or blocks telnet (or even know it still exists) It's a tiny DOS app.
