For starters my boss is a complete tool and a half. Dont get em wrong I like the guy as a person, but as a boss he's a complete retard. From what others have said who have worked with him in another store, he's been demoted more than 5 times in his career with best Buy. Not only that really, the stupid things that come out of his mouth at times about how we should be doing things is just a joke. Now like I said he's a nice guy and you can joke with him alot.
So today Im up at the front of the store covering one of the employees who works in Lost prevention. There were instructions up there from the previous night left by my freind who also happens to work in lost prevention, to the new guy on closing duites. Well my boss just happened to see this little list of instrusctions and commented how happy he was on how everyone in the deparment is communicating. he said at first "It brings a tear to my eye" I laugh slightly and say something like "ok thats nice." Then my boss says "actually it gives me wood" At that point as funny as it was I got sick to my stomach and told him that he's got issues. He's like yea I know. Now honestly it made me sick after a minute and it took me a minute to relize that really wasnt that funny, it was more inapproprate and not something you should ever say in front of anyone of your employees. Then again why am I making a big deal about this, it was a simple bad joke thats all.
Later on that evening I was talking to my good freind who works with me and told her confidentially what he said. She made a face and said "thats fucked up" She then told me about when she flips off that manager jokingly he responds by saying "no not now but maybe later" At that point Im like I really think theres an issue here as far as what is comming out of this guys mouth.
The only thing is I dont feel like being a snitch. As much as I hate the things the guy says everyday and as much a it sounds like nails on a chalk board everytime he talks I dont want the guy to get in trouble. I mean why should I call up HR and tell them that he's saying this stuff. I know he's joking and all. I know its wrong to say but I can take a joke. What do you think?

A manager isn't there to make sure everything goes happy go lucky like. He or she is there to make sure the store makes a profit and that the employees are working together to acheive industry goals. It's impersonal, but work was never meant to be personal. When it gets that way, that's when trouble happens.

yeah seriously - I work for a mostly all male sales team, along with another girl, and they say shit like that all the time. It's funny. They say the same shit my male friends would. It makes it fun to work here, and I know if I told them to shut up because I felt uncomfortable, they would.

I guarantee if someone really felt uncomfortable and talked to this guy he would stop. No reason to report him to HR and ruin his career unless he's fucking grabbing some girls ass.

Unless its out and out nasty harassment (ass grabbing, cornering you and asking for a date, etc.), this can usually be solved by TALKING TO THE PERSON rather than running to HR.

I recently had a similar problem with a lady who works in the office at my job. Jokes of all types fly around that place all day, but for some reason one I made in the wrong context one day offended her. It made me feel really bad because I had no intention of hurting her feelings. I was never really in danger of getting fired, it was more about how I felt bad that she was upset. So I apologized, and we've slowly been talking again like we used to.

I think the problem was the atmosphere of the place. Now I just don't really get too into the jokes there. I was just swept up in the "anything goes" kind of joking that sometimes takes place there. Race, Sex, Life, Death, The boss, anything goes. But if there's a chance I could hurt someone's feelings like that again, I'll just stay out.

I think, ag, that if the atmosphere there isn't to your liking, just opt out of the joking. I mean you're all adults there and I don't want to sound like I'm on the side of people who can't take jokes, but I do understand your thinking that you just want to work in a comfortable environment. But if joking is comfortable to them, you should't stop them either.
