Ron's comments about Billy

Last night, during the last hour, after talking about an episode in which Billy Staples dropped a hot dog in a bucket of bait, but then ate it after "kissing it up to God." The following exchange took place:


Ron: My prediction - Billy will be with us before we know it, or my prediction is we'll be with Billy before we know it.
Fez: Really?
Ron. Yeah.
Fez: Radio psychic.
Ron. Well.I'm not even going to put it as a radio psychic, maybe closer to a.
Drop: "Spy Report"
Ron: And that's all I'm saying. That's all I'm saying.



Is there something in the works? Is Ron once again having fun with those of us who listen too closely? I'm not going to speculate as to what this means, because I'm almost always wrong when I speculate, but it is an interesting tidbit.

Three things it could be -

1 - It was a joke that meant nothing - Ron likes to fuck with those of us who listen too closely...

2 - It was joke to let off steam; either because he is frusrated at the company, or frustrated at what went down Thursday with the scary new FCC laws...

3 - It was more than a joke, and Infinity should really step up and show the love the next time their contracts come up to be renewed...

To add more fuel to the flame, he also made a joke earlier in the show that it was a shame Michael Hughes didn't get the Nationals, because then he and Fez could have been bought out of their contracts.

And another thing... why is Ron talking so much about the 12 steps? He did a decent job of joking about drinking the SoCo, that was given to Fez a few nights ago... He talked w/ BoBo about it tonight... He tells stupid callers about the steps a lot more, the past week... He made a point of telling Fez that his abillity to quit drinking several hours before he leaves the "Friday at Thursdays" jaunts, proves Fez doesn't have a drinking problem... The show took a major comedic stance on drunk driving tonight... There was the whole Staples thing tonight...

I'm not trying to say Ron is off the wagon. I just think this trend has something to do with the future of the show. I don't know the show as well as most of you (I've only been listening for a year and a half), but something's up for sure.

I just hope I can keep listening to R&F in the future, so I don't have to go back to NPR.

My guess is it doesn't have anything to do with the future show. Ron said that he had one of those "drunk dreams" earlier in the week in which he dreamt that he was on the air drunk and people were disappointed in him. He also said that it really rattled him. That probably has more to do with the recent focus of the show.

DCRTV was also the leader in the reports that the Nationals were going to be heard on WJFK; the day Bill O'Reilly announced he was moving back to mid-days on JFK, DCRTV broke the story that he was going to another station; and DCRTV also reported more than once that Tony Kornheiser would come over.

He's gotten it right a few times, and he more than likely does have moles* in Infinity, but you have to really be careful when looking at there at looking at the differences between the rumors, the actual stories and the sometimes out and out lies in the mailbag on that site.

* - I'd find it hysterical if Ron turned out to be the mole! i picture him Friday nights, lonely and sad that Fez is out having all the fun with all of the cool kids like Laslo, Cheeseface, KOP and Bobo, and writes these secret missives to DCRTV Dave - but using Fez's AOL account. "That'll show them! That'll show them all!

I'll take that action! I feel that the radio industry will have a vacuum created by the departure of O&A, Howard Stern, Ferrall & others. Ron & Fez can be funny working clean so an FM Morning show could totally work for them.

FWIW, O of the O&A show had a comment last week (in response to somebody who had called in to complain) along the lines of "just wait, we've got some nice surprises lined up for you people." And both of them have made complaining about getting up in the morning an ongoing theme...

Although all our speculation isn't worth the bandwidth it's written on, I really think both teams have a mutual respect for the other and O&A have to have some macking power with XM to build an HBO-like franchise of enough top quality programming to get subscribers sending their shekels in every month.

As they have said before (like after the November 2004 interview w/ Tom Shales) they are not interested in "Narrow Casting," which is what going to either XM or Sirius is at this point, without being on terestrial radio.

Bob Edwards - the NPR radio dude that XM loves - was vocal last week about not knowing if anyone is listening to his show. When he was at public radio he had millions of listeners, and now they are attracting a fraction of that.

A move for R&F to strictly satellite will happen only after a complete rejection from Infinity, which could happen, but hopefully for their careers, will not. As someone said earlier, Stern leaving creates a huge vaccume with the company, and they are a talent that they could use - a talent that doesn't rely on strippers, fart jokes or giggling at the word "cunt."

R&F a lot of friends, both in front of and behind the microphones - both Jeremy Coleman and Rory Hamptons are among some of the familiar names at Sirius. They also have proven that they are not only team players, but they can make any show better (D&M, The Hideout, O&A, Out to Lunch, Monsters) by just appearing on it, so whoever gets them and works with them will be very lucky.

I hope that IF this speculation is remotely true, that they are getting woo-ed by everybody, and that (no matter where they land) they get some real respect (ie: $$).

Actually, he said that he hoped they got the Nationals so they'd have the summer off, not that their contracts would be bought out.

I agree 100% - I really hope that's what happens. Infinity, though, needs to let their talent do both. I don't think any other shows are on Infinity/Westwood One and satellite.
