Today at work, I was at an avent promoting my station. Usually this consists of me smiling, taking to people about the station, etc. Hand out some prizes, etc. etc.

While I'm doing this, a woman in her late 30's, early 40's from another company comes up and starts talking to me. I'm just thinking she's going to hit me up with the usual questions, like, "I hate that host!" or "I love that host!"

Out of nowhere: "Didn't you guys used to have Ron and Fez on? I loved them so much."

Immediately, my interest was piqued.

Me: "Um. Ron and Fez? No. Not us."

Her: "Where are they now? Do you know? They were so funny!"

Me: (wincing) There are down in DC, on WJFK. I used to do some stuff with them back in the day.

(meanwhile, I can feel my boss staring daggers at me, because it's REALLY bad business to be talking about other radio stations and other hosts while representing another station)

Her: "Oh."

Me: "Um... there are ways you can still listen to them."

Her: "What? How?"

I explained to her the concepts of the Big Ass Antenna, meanwhile my boss is losing his mind.

Her: "THat's great! Thanks for the info. Do you have XM? How is O&A? My husband is getting it for me for my birthday!"

At this point, my boss is now preparing to stab me repeatedly with a pen becuase he knows I'm an XM encyclopedia.

We part ways, but I feel special that I did my part to help out a New York buddy. Then my boss throttles me in a chokehold.

If I were you, I'd have reminded my boss that keeping people happy is key, even if it's talking about another station breifly. Since you were out in public, being nice and chatting with people sounds important to me. Now if that lady is scanning the channels, she may remember that someone at your station was nice to her, and listen. Sure there's no guarantee she will, but there's a damn good chance she'd hate your station and tell her friends not to listen if you had told her to get lost and stop talking about other radio stations.

Long story short, imagine going into a Hyundai dealer and asking about a certain car, and then the sales rep telling you that you should check out a used Mustang down the road. That's what the situation was akin to.

In my career, I've seen part-timers fired for being caught listening to other radio stations while in the station van. That's how territorial radio is.

Hell I would have the gun cocked and loaded at that point yelling I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!
