View Full Version : Cheapest way to drive from NYC to DC and back?

I am getting sick of those huge tolls between DC and NYC on 95 in Maryland. It's a killer when I am coming back north from DC. $6 or something plus the tunnels, plus the bridge, plus the turnpike.

Bah.

Going south isnt as bad since you can avoid the NJ turnpike and bridge by taking 95 into PA but the return trip hurts my wallet.

Any better way besides taking 95 the whole trip that wont take me a day and a half to do?

Well there is a way to avoid the toll on 95 inbetween Delaware and Philly.

If you take exit 109B towards UD then turn right across from the large shopping center. Follow this road till you get where you are across from the UD Stadium make a right and follow the signs to 95

This cuts out not only the toll but the area where things start to back up

also take 695 around the tunnel tolls a little more time but less on the wallet

Coming from DC

You would take 695 west to towson/ny follow all the way around till you see signs for 95 north again

time. dont take 95 up. take rt 13 through delaware into jersey and take
the GSP back up north, saves ya a good hour
its going from DC to NY i believe. haven't been down there in about 2 years. i think its one of those pay one way tolls, paying go north. if it isn't one way going South get off at 1B...make a left right before the stadium...take that road down to the light (i believe its Route 279, not sure, but there will be an ACME supermarket)...make a left at the light and take it to 95.

Well going south there is the Deleware Memorial Bridge toll and the NJ turnpike toll, which I can get around, then a toll in DE right after the exit for 896, and then the tunnel toll. So it sounds like I can get around everything going that way. Get off at 896 towards UoD, make some left at some shopping place, and go on my way.

Coming north there is only one toll left I need to avoid.. it's in the middle of Maryland someplace, by the Maryland house. Its $5 or $6 and makes me angry. Anyone know how to avoid that one? It's a one way north bound only toll on 95.

know what you mean. I didn't mind the toll when I was on trips for work
as they would just reimburse me. Recreational trips I just said to hell
with it and paid it. I thought I would be a wiseass and take US40
across the Susquehanna but they get you for the toll as well. Even if I
want to pay that toll I like the US40 bridge better cause of less
crosswinds. The I95 bridge scares the hell out of me and blows my
little Hyundai all over the road. The best thing I could suggest would
be to hop on US1 North off of the White Marsh exit which is 67B off of
I95. Take US1 all the way up until you know you have crossed the river
(which is really cool bridge that takes you through the Hydro-Electric
plant. After that you should see signs that point you towards I95 and
you should be set. Coming home late from shows in Baltimore I just take
US1 all the way up into PA until I hit I476. One lane until you hit PA,
you avoid all tolls and it gets me home in about the same time just
with $9 extra dollars in my pocket that I can use at many of the Super
Wawa's along the way.

The
map below will show you my route home in green. The one below it a
suggested route home for you to I95 going through Philly in blue.
Has there ever been a thread on town names that sound dirty? Peach
Bottom, yes, funny. Intercourse, Bird In Hand and Blue Ball ALL in PA
