I'm an Executive Assistant to the field sales force of a huge pharmaceutical company. I support the head of National Sales and the entire East Coast Sales Team (5 Executives and 45 Sales Reps). It's a little overwhelming at times, because I support over 50 people, and when you have all of them asking for something at once, it gets a little crazy. Anyway, I get along great with all of my managers, and with (I thought) all of the sales reps (they all work from home and I only see them occasionally.
I took last Thursday and Friday off and when I came back in on Monday I had 80 emails to go through. One of the first requests was to send out a projector to a sales rep on Wednesday. Since I have to prioritize - that went to the bottom of my to-do list, since I had other projects to do for the Sales Executives. Well, I clicked past it, never responded, and went on to do other things. My bad, I was overwhelmed with email, and they can rent a projector locally.
Now, the rep that requested the projector is under one of my managers that I get along really great with. So he called me today and said, “We get along great so I think I can ask you this, you don’t have a personal problem with XXXXXX sales rep do you?”. I was totally shocked and said no. He said he knew I wouldn’t, and that the rep took it personally that I didn’t send her the projector and thinks I have it out for her. I’m not in trouble for this, because my manager told her that she should have called me for it if I never responded to her email.

Now it’s all awkward and I don’t know how to handle this. It’s a little weird that this rep would think I have it out for her, because at a meeting back in February, I went out drinking with her, and sat talking with her for like 2 hours. So far all I’ve done is send an email apologizing and saying I forgot and it won’t happen again. Should I be calling this rep up and clearing the air? Or let it drop? I really wouldn’t care but I’m going to be in training with this rep in a month, and would like to avoid akwardness.

Let it drop, you already sent one email about it (although in my opinion you should have called, email is impersonal and a cowards way out of handling the situation [not calling you a coward]) if the person can't get over it then oh well for them.

People often forget that business is never personal and they don't know when to differentiate the two, just because you are angry at someone during work does not carry over into the personal world so there shouldn't be a problem. I think the problem is that society as a whole is sissified and that people take the slightest slight, so to speak, and blow it out of proportion. As a whole people need to be more professional - i also work in the health industry (a CRO) and know the diva like behavior of the people in this industry it is really something to behold

Keep your head up you handled it fine

yeah, I emailed her just saying that I'm sorry it didn't go out, I was overwhelmed and it won't happen again. I figure my manager will squash it if it comes up again.

We communicate mostly through email here, because the reps are out selling at hospitals all day and can't use their cell phones there.

i also work in the health industry (a CRO) and know the diva like behavior of the people in this industry it is really something to behold

Most of the reps I work with are cool, but the higher ups in this industry do have crazy egos.

i would have emailed her to let her know what your situation is, but that's done and over with. you should probably give her a call and leave her a message if you get her voice mail.

As far as the situation is concerned about you apologized for the deletion. It happens. If that person thinks you are out for them, fuck them that is their own ego working against themselves. I wouldnt call the person personally but rather do all ya can to fix what ya did wrong. As the old saying goes "words are nothing, actions speak a thousand words"
