What helped me best was finding out the times I liked to smoke the best and replacing it with something. I wouldn't exactly suggest dip (Sorry M1), but for me, one of the worst times I had with quitting was when driving in the car. For this case I kept a can of salted peanuts in the car (Not the healthiest snack, but it worked). This way, I had something else to take my mind of it. Blow pops work to a lesser extent, but the peanuts really helped.

Second of all, and this is the trap I fell into a couple times when trying to quit and I constantly see my friend doing when he tries to quit, and it's when the quitter goes some small time, like a week, then says, "it's been a week, i'm doing good, I'm going to have one". It never works, because the same pattern happens everytime, first you bum, then you feel bad about bumming so you buy a friend a pack and take like half, then buy your own and give out, and eventually, you are buying again. I've quit for about 2 and a half years now, and I won't lie, I havent been an angel, I've cheated, and it's easy to see how I could go back. Jeff, it's not easy, but you can do it. It's one of the best thing you can do for yourself.

Also it helps if you have a blood pressure machine at your job. We have a little kiosk here, and I could actually see my blood pressure go down over the months.

I'm sure there are other people on this site with tougher addiction stories than mine, but this was my experience with quitting.

I'm going through the same thing right now and it sucks. I have a doctor's appointment in the morning to see if he can suggest a treatment for me.

I've weened myself down to 3-4 cigs a day but I can't cut it out completely.

I've even quit before, cold turkey and stopped for 3 years. Then I started again a few years ago. I've tried to quit on my own numerous times since then but it's not working. I think it's a combination of my mindset, replacing it with something (I'm a BlowPop addict when I try to quit) and maybe the patch or gum will work since I'm not a heavy, heavy smoker.

Good luck, don't give up. I'll tell you if anything works for me. Oh, and I used to work for a Compounding Pharmacist and they have nicotine lolipops that were pretty successful. You just have to convince a doctor to write the prescription.

my Uncle Bill smoked for over 50 years and went 'cold turkey' about 6 years ago when my mom passed away due to a heart attack(she smoked around 45 years) and they found a blockage in his neck 'which was cleared'...

something I didn't know but learned the hard way was that smoking builds up plack/plaque(sp?) in your arteries

hopefully you can quit before something severely affects your health for the worst

I was a big-time smoker, 2 packs a day plus sometimes. I did it for years. I hated it too. What I did was "give myself a day". What I mean is, if I can stop doing it for one day, then I have one day under my belt. I figured, if I was asleep (and notice that you dont need to keep waking up and smoking, right?) I figured if I was asleep, then thats 7 or 8 hours of non smoking. There; you got part of that day done. So, you then have to try and go the remaining time without a cigarette. I kept drinking water, imagining that the water was washing me out from the inside. I further imagined that thw withdrawal symptoms/discomfort was actually the feeling of my body ridding itself of tar and nicotine. You focus on that feeling; imagining it is a good feeling, thats its your body doing something to clean you out. It worked for me. I got over that day. Each day after that got easier and easier. Suddenly, you can taste things again, food tasted great! In a month, youll be back to 80% lung capacity. Its well worth it! Also, tell yourself, if I can look at a druggie and scorn him, and I cant get over this little addiction, what does it say about me and my willpower?
The only hard thing will be in social settings where others you know will be smoking, especially when your drinking and your inhabition is lower. Id avoid those for a while.
Challenge yourself, get angry at yourself. You can beat it!

Possibly inspire me to stop.

I only do abut 4 or 5 during the day.

One at 6 am with my coffee.

One on the drive to work.

One after lunch.

One on the drive home.

Then after I cook dinner for the boys, I grab a brew and smoke. After a bath and toothbrushing, a brew and a smoke. Get the boys to bed, Yankee game. A couple of brews, a couple of smokes. etc!

It's fairly obvious that except for the few habitual ones, the beers trigger the smokes. I'm guessing if I cut down on the evening beverages, I could cut down on the butts.

I went to the doctor today and she prescribed me the Nicotine Inhaler (which is better than the patch/gum because the actual hand to mouth action and inhaling is the hard part of quitting for me.) It looks like a cigarette and you inhale nicotine but it goes in through the mouth and not the lungs, plus cuts out all the tar/chemicals. I guess it will ween me off in a few months.

But she also presribed me Wellbutrin. I'm not really sure I want to start taking an anti-deppresant/ADHD medicine to help me quit smoking but apparently, that is one of the main uses of the drug.

I'm already on a stimulant for my ADD and it kind of scares me to think I'll be on two strong medicines on a daily basis.

Has anyone else heard of/tried this pill to quit?

My quitting story:

After smoking approx. a pack and a half a day for the last 15 years I quit just a week ago Friday. The doctor was kind enough to give me 8 weeks worth of Wellbutrin and told me to pick up the patch. Now since I was more chemically dependent on the nicotine than on the hand to mouth motion I wasn't the most pleasant person for the first couple of days but I was tolerable. The people I work with didn't even notice a change in my mood at all (they might be lying but anyway). It definitely isn't easy but you notice the difference very quickly.

I only smoke when I drink...something that makes Alcohol and Tobacco better together..

but I helped someone quit smoking, and you'll laugh but this is a true story...everytime he wanted a smoke, I punched or kicked him in the chest, when he was gasping for air on the ground, I told him "that's how your lungs feel when you smoke!!" After a week if that he hasn't touched another cigarette again

For those of you who don't have the gonads to go Cold Turkey, I strongly recommend the Nicotrol Inhaler. It looks like a cigarette and feels like a cigarette and delivers a quick and strong dose of nicotine, similar to that of smoking. It's also great for people with a strong oral fixation because you can simulate the act of smoking. I was a smoker for 7 years and couldn't last a week on the gum or the patch. The inhaler worked like a charm and I haven't smoked since. It's a prescription and it's expensive because some insurance carriers don't cover it, but it's worth it.

I only smoke when I drink also. I don't think about cigs all week but after a beer or 6 I really crave a menthol. But if I don't buy a pack beforehand and don't bum any I just forget about wanting one after a while. I don't know why I never got addicted to cigarettes since I seem to get addicted to everything else. Are some people just immune to nicotine?

While on it I never thought about smoking. I pretty much quit without even realizing it. And when I would smoke it was only when someone else was or when I was drinking. I say give it a shot.

OK, Alice and Gina convinced me to try the Wellbutrin. But how did you feel the first couple days you were on it? My doctor said I might feel funny at first but to stick it out.

Does it make you feel kind of lightheaded or will my stomach hurt?

I quit 3 weeks ago after smoking for 12 years. I used the patch for the first week and nothing but will power since. It has definately helped that my fiancee quit with me or I'm thinking that this would have been a lot tougher to accomplish and while evry once in a while I find myself wanting a cigarette, I have found that it is just a habitual want, and not something that I feel like I absolutely have to have. Good Luck Jeff!

Congrats on quitting jestah.

I was just updating everyone that I haven't had a cig since AUGUST 4th. It was hard but I did it with will power and those Wellbutrin pills. They really helped with the craving. After I started taking them I was still smoking but I slowly tapered off because it was starting to taste gross.

I'm still on it though. She said she wanted to keep me on it for about 6 months total just to make sure I don't start again.

So far so good. I'm proud of myself! Now, I have to work on quitting that other smoking I do...
