<p><a href="http://www.moveon.org/publicbroadcasting/?t=1">http://www.moveon.org/publicbroadcasting/?t=1</a></p><p>From MOVEON Newsletter:</p><p><strong><em>A House panel has voted to eliminate all public funding for NPR and PBS, starting with "Sesame Street," "Reading Rainbow," and other commercial-free children's shows. If approved, this would be the most severe cut in the history of public broadcasting, threatening to pull the plug on Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Oscar the Grouch.</em></strong></p><p><strong><em>The cuts would slash 25% of the federal funding this year—$100 million—and end funding altogether within two years. The loss could kill beloved children's shows like "Clifford the Big Red Dog," "Arthur," and "Postcards from Buster." Rural stations and those serving low-income communities might not survive. Other stations would have to increase corporate sponsorships.</em></strong></p><p><strong><font size="7">Save Sesame Street!</font></strong></p>

You know the profit margin after PBS administrative costs. You then also know the youth programs and charities Sesame Street donates to after it has paid what it needs just to produce a show everyday.</p><p>Sesame Street and other children's programming makes enough to keep EVERYTHING ELSE afloat. Last time I checked, it's pretty expensive to run a television station. These people beg for your money to stay on television even after federal assistance. Give me a break. How many telethons do they have to put on to illustrate how cash-strapped they really are? Your attempt to equate Sesame Street with Microsoft and other big corporations is nothing short of ludicrous. </p><p>When's the last time you saw a "Wild America" plush toy? There ARE other shows on PBS...not to mention National Public Radio, which has little to no advertising budget. The only thing that might save Prarie Home Companion would be seeing Garrison Keillor impaled with on a midwest fence-post as dull as he is. That show is almost as bad as the endless babbling and phony laughter from the Car Guys (the Don and Mike of NPR). How a network with such brilliant programming can broadcast that shit is beyond me.

<p>I listen to NPR and WNYC more than any other station, and I have no problem with this. </p><p>For those who do have a problem with this, I suggest</p><p>1) You support your local public radio station (I do)<br />
</p><p>2) You can tell some of these stations to put on programs (WLIW
comes to mind) which are actually educational and/or informative. And
not Lawrence Welk/Ed Sullivan/Flyover Italy garbage.<br />
</p><p>3) They can add more corporate sponsors. Or God forbid, run a commercial or two. </p><p> </p><p>I've
never bought into the notion that running commercials corrupts the news
division of any major network. And the thought that it would sounds to
me like cartoonish, left wing conspiracy nonsense. </p><p>If a network
wants to be TRULY independant, they should not take a dime from any
politician. I can cite numerous examples of NYC politicians leaning on
WNYC hosts (back when it was 100% funded by the city) to put friends of
theirs on, and when they refused, the politician threatened their boss
with withholding/opposing future funding. </p><p>Also, PBS is an
anachronism. You have the History Channel, Nasa channel, Discovery
Channel, C-Span (Which doesn't recieve a dime from the feds) Science
& tech, etc etc. And PBS has all to often been a vehicle for getting
out a left leaning Upper West Side view of History, Science, and
Politics. Bill Moyer does regular shows on PBS, all attack pieces on
Republicans. Please name me the counterbalancing right winger on PBS
who does the "investigative" shows attacking the Left in a similar
fashion. Doesn't exist. <br />

</p><p>Well, I guess you didn't hear about what BP
is doing. They have decided to pull their commercials from any
newscasts that portray them in an unflattering light. This is a
horrible precedent, and unfortunately other companies are following
suit.</p><p>The more undeniable point is that when a newscast become
dependent on commercials, they become dependent on ratings, and when
that happens, ratings take precedent over newsworthiness, and that
leads to shit like round the clock Michael Jackson coverage, and then
you've lost any point for having PBS in the first
place. </p>

<p>Right. Which is why scientists NEVER argue about anything. Just get the facts, then everybody agrees on them. There's always two or more ways to look at the same set of facts. </p><p>I do agree some data lends itself open to interpretation, but you were suggesting PBS only shows left-wing interpretations of scientific data, which is silly. Maybe I misread you...</p><p>I'm still waiting for the right wing investigative reporter on PBS. Enlighten me. </p><p>Maybe there isn't one, which is fine with me. I don't turn to PBS for political commentary. NPR is fairly balanced. PBS for me is a medium for the arts...that's what I enjoy about it...music, theater, quality children's television...I grew up on Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street...as my tastes evolved I came to enjoy the orchestral and jazz specials...</p><p>I don't really want to focus on PBS so much as all federally subsidized communications...yes there are faults in the balance of PBS politics but the real substantial arguement for its defense is its quality entertainment programming. </p>

there isn't one, which is fine with me. I don't turn to PBS for
political commentary. NPR is fairly balanced. PBS for me is a medium
for the arts...that's what I enjoy about it...music, theater, quality
children's television...I grew up on Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street...as
my tastes evolved I came to enjoy the orchestral and jazz specials...</p><p>I

Sure its fine
with you, but you yourself were just complaining about Fox News. If you
were to the right of center politically, and saw one piece after
another blaming Republicans for everything thats wrong in the world,
you'd be annoyed. Then throw in they're funded with your tax dollars.
(Again, Fox isn't)<br />
<p> </p><p>NPR is fairly balanced, and makes a constant effort to be so.
PBS should do the same, if they want public funding. But they haven't
changed. This fight was started by Newt Gingrich in the mid 90's and
despite all the threats and cajoling by Congress, the product hasn't
changed. </p><p>And you know what? If they wont change, thats fine
with me. They probably shouldn't. They've built an audience who
respects and trusts them for their content. There's alot to be said for
the Liberal point of view, I dont want them silenced. Just do it
without public funding. Or volunteer to have Fox News get a 25% budget
increase from the Feds, to be fair. </p><p>Do you realize that C-Span
is a product of the Cable industry? And recieves no public money?
Congress, working with the cable industry in the 70's, had the industry
make space for public affairs programming.</p><p> And while there WAS a
need for PBS in the old, 13 channel TV world, its all changed so much
that to still prop them up with public dollars is unecessary. PBS will
survive, maybe they'll need to adapt a little to do so. <br />

True. It's obvious PBS often skews waaaaay left with their political programming, but "Frontline," in my opinion, is by far THE best news/investigation/documentary program on TV today.

<p>I stand corrected. </p><p>Plus, you can be pretty grouchy yourself, and you're no conservative.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Miss Piggy- Well, thats easy. A Communist pig. Or a Capitalist pig. But definitely a pig. OK, thats not easy at all. </p><p> </p><p>Kermit

life. I'd say a liberal fag.</p><p> </p><p>Cookie Monster- A
