View Full Version : My Cat Sid

My cat, Sid, died today. For the past couple of months he's been
back and forth from being pretty feeble, but still he had moments of
being rather lucid and as active as he could be. Pretty amazing
considering that 3 years ago 2 different vets were convinced he had a
brain tumor and would have to be put to sleep then. After some time and
medication he got better - got off the meds, and confounded them all.
His luck ran out over this last
weekend, however; things got much worse as he his seizures returned. He
went
downhill pretty fast.

In the end he was still mentally alert, but
physically weak. His 18 year old body just couldn't take care of
himself anymore.

I
was with him when he went - it was very peaceful;
he was purring as I held him.
He was the best cat - a very loyal and consistent companion and I will
miss him very, very much. I've had him since college. He never
complained about moving, or riding in the car. He's been with me
through several relationships (new "moms"!), jobs, and life
revelations. He was never the kind of cat that would bother non-cat
people - he'd wait for me when I left, and (even when he was old) would
greet me at the door like a puppy.

At
one point he was a huge cat - almost 25 pounds. One funny memory I have
was when my (then) 8 year old godson tried to pick him up and ended up
falling backwards - freaks me out, because the kid is now a almost 20
year old man.

I'm very sad. I don't think I can replace him -
not for a long time. Eventually I may, or I may hold out for my
parent's African Gray parrot, who still meows like Sid. He will always
be with us, I suppose.

I am very grateful to have had him for
almost half my life.

I'm so sorry for your loss, curtoid! He sounded like an amazing cat. He had a good, long life, a good dad. Keep thinking of the happy times.
Good for you not listening to the vets. They give up too easy sometimes I think, and Sid proved them wrong. Something similar happened to a cat I had (he died 3 years ago) who had a stroke and all the vets thought he was doomed but I nursed him back to health and he lived another 2 years!
You'll always have the memories. And though another cat can never replace him, a new cat can bring you more years of joy. Wait until the time is right--only you will know when that is. I didn't want to "replace" my cat but missed having a kitty around the house, so I volunteered at the local animal shelter and after 2 weeks found him. A fat orange tabby who was next in line to be killed! I brought him home and have never looked back.
It's very hard to lose a beloved pet. You feel like you'll never get over it. You don't, but the pain does fade eventually. I feel for you, man, and I hope one day you'll let another cat into your life. You won't regret it.
R.I.P. Sid!

Everyone - thanks so much for your words, both to those who posted here or who e-mailed or IMed me. I'm sorry it's taken a few weeks to respond, but to be honest I really didn't want to look back in here again. Sorry about that.

I'm doing better, but I do miss him still. I'm going to go catless for awhile, but thanks. I was surprised, though, that I did feel the pull to get another cat so soon after losing Sid. It's a lot of little things I'm not use to - after 18 years of caring for something, to then not have it there is very weird. I keep expecting to see him under the kitchen table asleep, or by my bed, or in the bathroom on the bath mat. When we get nasty storms and I'm not at home, I catch my self worried that the power may go out and the A/C may go off. If I were in a house, I'd love to get a dog too, but right now I am going to give myself at least until the end of the year, and then make a decision.

Duke - yeah, that's a picture of Sid from about a year and a half ago, right after he got better from being so sick, but before he really began looking old. Here are some better pics of him, going back to when I was in college (the one with his head in the fishbowl), up to about five years ago.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v64/curtoid/sid2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v64/curtoid/sid1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v64/curtoid/sid3.jpg

Thanks again, everyone. It really helped.

Curtis

Quinn, Curt, I'm sorry for your losses.

My dog passed when I was home alone with her. It was one of the first times that my parents allowed me to stay home without a baby sitter. I was about 13 at the time.

She had some health issues, but she had been with me my entire life. She had some surgery to remove a benign tumor from her hip. She limped, but she was still a good puppy.

I remember everything about that night as vividly as ever. "The Sure Thing" was playing on Channel 11, and I heard her hacking behind me. I looked and she began vomiting and laying on her side. I completely freaked and called my parents at the restaurant, losing my mind because I knew what was happening and I was powerless to stop it.

waiting for my parents to get home and watching her struggle to stay alive was one of the toughest things ever... I didn't think I would ever feel that alone again.

We buried her body in my old house's backyard the next day. It was the first time I ever had to deal with death, and I wasn't sure how to process it.

To this day, I still haven't taken on another pet as companionship. My brother has two dogs now, and for some reason, even though they are cute, I can't bring myself to have an emotional attachment to them.

I think some days that I want a new dog... maybe a beagle or something... but I'm not sure how I'd handle the responsibility.

Hey everyone - thanks again.

Quinn - really sorry about Gavin. What a cool cat name.

narc
- Sid was named right after i saw "Sid & Nancy" at the old Key
Theatre in georgetown during my Thankgiving break fron college. He was
actually an early xmas gift from friends of mine. They were dog people
and had been hinting at getting me a basset puppy. They called me over
to get the gift, an on my way over to their apartment i was trying to
think of the oddest basset name and Sid came to mind.when i got there
they had him in this tiby little box, so i knew it wasn' a basset - the
second he popped his little head out, though, i knew he was a Sid.
