Story (http://www.boycott-riaa.com/article/17600)

Since Spitzer's investigation began, the three other record companies
have circulated internal memos outlining unacceptable promotion
practices company insiders said.

Radio airplay is considered the most powerful promotional tool for
record companies. In the past, labels blatantly traded cash, drugs and
prostitutes for airplay.

Today, record companies pay independent promoters to persuade radio programmers to spin particular songs.

The independent promoters pay radio stations annual fees, sometimes in
excess of $100,000, in exchange for advance copies of the stations'
playlists. Promoters say these fees do not influence a radio station's
choice of songs. However, critics suggest that the payments are a way
to skirt the law.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of his. On most of his cases, I cant find
the smoking gun. Where's the corruption here? They pay a company to
promote thier artists. And. . . . ?

I actually think he's a shake down artist, 10 mil is nothing to
Sony, and he goes away. Like Jesse Jackson, but he was actually elected
to something. And he gets his handsome face in the newspapers alot, so
he's probably the next Governor. This act has been done a thousand
times. Crusading prosecutor locks up bad guys and gets elected to major
office. Guiliani, Dewey, even way back to LaGuardia. Which is fine, as
long as there some ACTUAL bad stuff going on here. I get the impression
he thinks ALL business is corrupt on some level, like alot of his left
wing liberal friends.
I think there was a lot of shady shit going on in
the mutual fund business. I didn't mind him going after
them.
Like what? And I'm not trying to be a prick, I'm asking. Every time
he's done one of these settlements, I look into the wrongdoing, and I
cant find any that makes any sense to me.
In the mutual fund scandal of late 2003 Traders were involved in a timing scandal. Mutual funds stop trading at 4pm and traders were making money after the 4pm close

Ok, thats something. But its the kind of thing you hand out some fines for, not hold a major press conference.
You don't have to
take my word about it, but I read a bunch of articles outlining what was going on with
the mutual fund scandals. I'd have zero chance finding them now. But
what I remember was what Wrestlingfan said, and also something like
skimming off the top, something similar to the plot in Office Space. That's as best as I can explain it from my memory. It
was very complicated and I have zero chance of explaining it without
the articles, but they were making some serious money.
