View Full Version : I suck at driving lately

Well, my actual driving is fine-- never been in an accident or gotten a ticket. I've just been really nervous when I drive lately. I'm fine when I go to the store or drive around Jersey City and Hoboken but I get really nervous and have been on the verge of a few panic attacks lately when I drive major roads. Rt. 3 is the worst or wherever there is major construction, like the Tpk.

My hands ache from gripping the steering wheel so tight. My best friend says she's the same way. Maybe it's just that other people around here drive like maniacs. I had a woman on my tail on Rt 3 Sunday. I prayed to God the car in front of me wouldn't make a short stop.

I hope I get over this soon. I'm supposed to drive 3 hours to see some friends soon.

Perhaps if you play some music that you really enjoy, can sing along to, it will help calm your nerves. And stay in the right lane and go at a reasonable speed, flipping off anyone who beeps their horn at you.

Just a thought.

Maybe if you go to Hoboken to see the "Opened" eye Jesus, it'll help. You never know.

3 hours isn't bad if you got tunes playing in the car and some caffeine.

How can you suck at driving if you live in Jersey City? Don't you have to have quick reflexes to avoid those potholes?

I hope I get over this soon

me too... nobody needs that extra stress

maybe try not to look in the rearview mirror as much and just use the side mirrors. there isn't too much you can do about something that's happening right behind you. ride the middle or right lanes. another thing i find is that if i'm holding the steering wheel at the top i'm grabbing it real tight and if i just rest my hands on the bottom of the wheel then i'm more relaxed...

good luck!

I've never really been like that, luckily. I'll usually grip the steering wheel really tightly right after I'm almost in an accident. But a few miles down the road I'm calm again.

Hope you get over it soon. Were 46 and 23 more kind to you? I know 287 wasn't. ::inside jokes-always funny::

Your car is too small for Jersey City. You're gonna get bullied around by bigger cars and get knocked around by potholes. In my SUV I glide over Jersey City potholes and NOBODY comes near me since my truck is dirty and looks like it has nothing to lose.

But I like my Hyundai Elantra wagon. I can't afford an SUV!

I've actually had panic issues myself, the past 4 years. It's mostly with one road (I-81 in VA). I had a death dream about it, pluss I've known several people who have been killed on that interstate in the past several years. It's so bad that I can no longer drive there at all. I'm ok on most highways, but I have had problems elsewhere from time to time.

Also, like Aunt Fezzy, I have bridge issues. If it's a particularly long bridge, or one with an arch or a curve I just can't handle it. I once drove over the Chesapeke Bay Bridge, to get to Ocean City, and damn near had a heart attack. Let me be the driver, though... I can panic like crazy, if anyone else does the driving.

Thanks PapaBear. I feel less alone.

I HATE bridges. I have major issues with the Raritan Bridge. I had a major panic attack going over the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

I'm taking Tall James' advice and bringing a CD player with me from now on.

I know its not related to driving, but maybe my recent procedure can help shed some light. I was so scared at what might happen, that I allowed that fright to drive me to a sheep panic attack, right in the waiting room. Once in the Dr's office, and I explained my fears to the nurse, she calmed me down a bit by describing what was going to happen. I had the Dr tell me what he was doing as he was doing it. In my case, the fear of the unknown is what drives my panic. Perhaps your fear of the unknown also drives your panic, and if it is the case, I suggest if you can lean whatever it is that scares you : fear of a falling bridge, a sudden accident, a bad driver, a car in the oppisite side, etc., whatever it is.. Study it. What hold the bridge up? How hard would it be to fall? What would happen if it did? What are the ODDS of it happenong when I am on it?
How about taking a defensive driving class? I have Geico and they give me a break on my insurance when I take a class every 3 years, and I have to take one in October. They teach you how to look for things to keep you safe. How to avoid an accident. Tricks that can get you out of a skid or whatever.

Just think things through. Use the beginnings of the feeling of a panic attack as your warning to "change gears" and as your indicator to focus your attention on something different. In this case, focus on what your fear really is and try to imagine if it is rational.

I hope I helped!
