<p>Why do sales people ask "Do you need help <strong>ma'am?"</strong>
when i'm walking around a store? I guess i'm passed the "miss" stage
but there should be something inbetween. It annoys me especially when
they're obviously older than me, "ma'am" just makes me feel tired and
useless, which i'm not.<br />

I actually like it when people call me sir...makes me feel distinguished. "Can I help you with that sock, sir?" and whatnot...things of that nature. I also like it when little kids call me "man" as in "Mom, what is that man doing to that dog?" and whatnot...things of that nature....

<p>People in Law Enforcement, The Military, and Customer Service are trained to use Ma'am and Sir. They always have been. It was considered to be respectful many decases ago and...at some point it became "offensive" to women.</p><p>Slightly off topic but, what the HELL is the big f'cking deal with women not wanting to reveal their age and weight?!! I mean really....we all KNOW you ain't 25 years old anymore. What's the shame in admitting you're 37 years old IF YOU ARE 37 YEARS OLD?! </p><p>Same goes for your weight. You're not 105 pounds. We all know it. You're not a perfect size 6. That's obvious too. So, if there is a situation wherein you're asked to reveal your height or weight, why the hell do women act indignant??</p><p>It's vain. And ridiculous. </p>

<p>Ah, I say any woman that is truly offended by the use of "Ma'am" needs SERIOUSLY rethink their values.</p><p>It all boils down to intent and context. There is NOTHING inherently offensive about the word "Ma'am". It's not at all derogatory (sp?). In fact...it's the exact opposite. It's actually quite formal and is meant as a sign of respect. There is ZERO malice or disrespect or negative intent attached to it.</p><p>Now "Babe" or "Honey" or "Darlin'" or any of those...I guess I could understand. They are too familiar to be used when referring to strangers. </p><p>But Ma'am is such an innocent word. I mean...if you are out in the world and you are trying to get a womans attention, I would think that Ma'am would be less offensive than "Hey Lady...is this seat taken?" or "Yo, you forgot your change."</p><p>This is all, of course, an effort to avoid accidentally calling some women "Mrs" when they are single or "Ms" if they are married. Which is an honest mistake that also seems to offend women.</p><p>Jeesh!</p>

Oh whatever, grlnin can have her opinion, but so can the others; for the record I'm with Mike - I get called Ma'am all the time but hey, I also get carded all the time (tonight I got carded TWICE - and I'm in NZ where the drinking age is EIGHTEEN!) so it all works out, right? whatever - there are far more annoying things in life than being called Ma'am...

Obviously. But this thread is about THAT annoyance. It isn't somehow blocking people from posting their other grievances...I mean, honestly...what thread on this board ISN'T about the most trivial and insignificant shit in our dull, dull lives?

<p>Where in NZ? My Mom lived in NZ for 3 years and my bro lived in
Palmerstone North (something like that) for about a year (they had a
nice flat from the pictures I've seen). I coulda lived there for a year
too but I found a job at about the same time over here stateside.
My bro came back pale white (I almost didn't recognize him picking him
up at the airport) but he got his color back and all the weight he lost
down there too. I plan to go there someday to check it out.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>
