Let me set the scene. It's 3 in the morning. I'm in Massachusetts. Unhallowed has just left one of the WORST venues it's ever played. Bob is sleeping in the backseat as Jenn is navigating with the Mapquest directions from the passenger seat. She's told me about 5 times already that she thinks I've gone too far west on the Mass. Turpike to meet up with 91. Well an hour later it finally dawns on me she was very rights. I'm about 20 miles from the NY/Mass border, not sure how the fuck I'm getting back south to Pennsylvania. Hey, I'm awake now!

So we break out the Road Atlas. Hey! There's some road called The Taconic Parkway that meets up with 84 again. Let's take that.

Dude, what the fuck is up with this road?! It is BARREN!!! I was on the road for about a half hour before I even saw another car. I felt like I had driven onto a road that wasn't in service anymore. All the exits were like 5 miles apart, and they seemed like they were for individual people's personal driveways. "Jason's House 2 Miles."

So, what the hell was this road I was on? I hardly have a memory of it because I was half asleep. Does it get any more populated further south? I was up at the beginning of it. In fact, I think I was at the very beginning.

I thinks it's a nice stretch of road. I used to travel it all the time. A word of advice...don't speed. Many, many tickets issued.

i use this parkway once a year on my way upstate. i meet my parents at a diner towards the end near Albany. it is loaded with cops and they hide everywhere. there aren't really many exits off of it either...more like crossroads. i always wonder where the supermarkets and things like that are for those people who live there.

taconic pkwy a nice stretch of curvey road. I take that to get to my house on the border of mass and NY in a town called Chatam. Its sick, there's stop signs on that road for people to pass over it. I sold my old car to someone that lived out there. The kid went to cross the toconic pkwy in the car at one of those stop signs and got T-boned by someone doing about 80mph. The kid is now paralized. Sad story.

I hate that highway... way too narrow, dark, and deer popping out of the woods all the time

The Taconic has a section on the northbound side with this humongous retaining wall where the shoulder should be (and enough room for 1.75 lanes instead of the two that one would expect) that was made famous in Die Hard 3 (I think it was 3). They staged a car chase on it and ol' Bruce Willis was hanging out of the car (or truck or something) shooting at the bad guys. The "Hey I know where that is" moment was the best part of the movie for me.

I used to take it when my friend would drive up to Poughkeepsie. It's a very lonely road. It makes no sense in this area.

The good thing about the taconic is that there are no tolls and no trucks. I wouldn't take it north of poughkeepsie though.

You most definitly don't want to do th Taconic...

in a van

tired

under the influence of ANYTHING!

I used to do it in my Pontiac 4-banger on a regular basis. (stone Sober of course)

and once I was lent a BMW Z3 for the ride. Fucking KILLER.

If you have a feel for the car, and really know how to run through the gears, the TP is really a great proving ground for your skills!

I live near the poughkeepsie exit off the Taconic and there was one
time I was driving north up to Jiminy Peak Mountain in Mass. It
was so cold and it was all uphill. I was so scared my car was
going to just die and I was going to freeze to death on the side of the
road. Very very creepy road. . at night. . . in the snow.

Despite it's breathtaking scenery, the Taconic is a fucking deathtrap. The roads are too windy and narrow. They are constantly warning you about falling rocks and stupid deer. Every five miles there are cops stationed in dense forest that are impossible to spot. And it becomes a nightmare under any sort of weather conditions. I drove back from college one year in a blizzard and almost killed myself 3 times. It's worth taking if you're looking for a nice leasurely drive through some beautiful scenery. Otherwise, stay the hell away.

it's just awful between yorktown and coldspring...so windy. and they've been doing construction on this part for the last 10 years. i was late to work almost every day one winter when i lived up in mahopac because there was always an accident. i know so many people that have gotten into accidents, and know of people who died on that road. once my aunt was driving on it and a deer jumped out from nowhere and went right through her windshield.

OMG Moe you hit the nail on the head! It fucking sucks.
Seriously, why the fuck do they take you to the center of town for
food? They just built a new shopping area right off exit 19 off
84 where they could easily have food for easy on/off access to
84. Fuckers.
