Put it this way,if you get a feel for the scale of who gets paid.Jim
Norton constantly makes reference to him being the guy on the show who
ISN'T a MILLIONAIRE because of HIS deal with XM/O&A
show. On the other side,Sirius Sat radio,Howard Stern
was signed for half a BILLION. Robin's deal ??? unknown,but she's been
a MILLIONAIRE since the 1990's. Jackie Martling may be a
Millionaire, but nowhere near as rich as Robin.Artie has made a few
million, but gambles a lot,and still gets movies and shows...so he may
be lured away from Stern show.Stuttering John got signed to Leno
reportedly for half a Million. Can
we take a survey or pot luck bet on how much R&F signed for? I'll
wait for more info before making my best guess.
Here's a very wild guess on how well-paid R&F are from WJFK vs XM
radio.I have nothing to base this guess on,but later someone can see if
I have a grip on reality.WNEW days I'm guessing 60-80k each per
year.WJFK I'm guessing 80-100k per year. My best guess aug 12,having no
inside info whatsoever for their XM deal, neighborhood of
300k-500k per year.I don't think they'd be started off as highly paid
as O&A,yet if their numbers pull well,my bet is that their raises
will be very impressive. You have to realize that as the population ages
right into the R&F age brackets very comfortably, the big spenders
will sign right up for R&F when it's considered not as caustic as
O&A...like you can turn it on with the kids in the car.I'm no
expert in that business.Who can straighten me out?
this is a topic that I have actually been thinking about for a while. Whomever sad 60-80 k in NY and 80-110 in DC is nuts. Ron has two kids and has made reference to the fact that his wife doesn't work. And he has mentioned that his building in NYC had a doorman. There is no way in hell that they were making that little and living in Manhattan. My girlfriend and I make about a buck twenty and we are in the process of buying a third floor walk up and it is in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn (can't affordManhattan)and it is a one bedroom. No chance Ron had a three bedroom in Manhattan with a door man on $70K a year, absolutely impossible. If he owned it, minimum of a $1.3 million and if he rented $6000/month, at least.....I think that their salary in the .com days was about $250 a piece, when they went to middays I am betting $400k each and that stayed through this last July....I would think that at XM they are on a base of $500k and get an annual bonus based on how many listeners sign up specifically for their show.

Why do we need to know? Whatever they're getting they should get more. They make me laugh and that should be all there is to it.

The bigger question is why in the hell does XM's goddawful marketing department still exist?

XM signs Ron and Fez back on 8/1 and there is barely a mention on their website and certainly nothing under the 202 section. There is no mention on the home page of either O&A's show or Ron and Fez. Yet if you go to the Sirius website they are plugging every show they're adding. They just signed Richard Simmons (for some reason) and there's already a graphic for it. They advertise everything on Sirius's website yet XM has nothing. That's the bigger question. In my opinion anyway.

Terry, you have the advantage on me that I never heard R&F until 2
years ago.I'm in Delaware, and I have no concept of rents in NY area.I
don't know if he had any other income from say, the sale of his old
club in Fla or some side business that allowed him to live beyond what
his radio income would allow. That's interesting how you came to your
figures.I was hoping to get some more informed knowledge than
mine.Thanks.
not worried about SKW....just trying to get a handle on how the business side of the radio industry works, because it is interesting. How ratings and time slots correlate to the prices of spots and revenue stream for the radio station and how that in turn correlates to the "peronalities" salary. Whether it's Mike and the Mad Dog, Sid and Joe, or R&F. I guess what I would really like to know about radio is what their profit margins are for a given show after the hosts and everyone associated with the show is paid. Most retail industries are around 8 - 12% profit margins....does anyone know if their is a standard for radio shows?

It just seemed odd that when I went on the XM website I saw nothing about R&F being there.

On
this site I saw a fair amount of people NOT interested in paying to
hear R&F. (which is amazing to me since they could have easily
dropped out of WNEW and never came back. I think many would have paid
back then)

So I wanted to understand why a company
would pay money and give them a home when they don't advertise it and
some of their hardcore listeners seem reluctant to pay.

I think meaty breasted Jim Norton addressed your question before it was
asked, days ago.He said that, since SPORTS are very big on XM's marketing
agenda and PULL for the mainstream market...there are more people who
HATE O&A or HATE Stern(type of radio) than LIKE
(paraphrasing>>Bawdy talk/comedy/dirty potty mouth radio). It's
all about bringing in big numbers of subscribers, and the R&F niche
is just a small part of XM's " universe".
Conversely, just because you hear a lot about Stern bringing BIG numbers
of new customers...that's hype in essence when you consider other big
draws hjaving nothing to do with Stern. So if Stern claims a MILLION new
subscribers in the last 6 months to a year in Sirius...take that with a
grain of salt because they are offered as extras or standard in some
new cars, but ALL those subscribers aren't for Stern, since sports and
music programs also draw, especially for truckers.Let's say that mostly
it's MALES spending the big bucks first on SAT radio, since they have
the disposable income, and assume that MALES make up about 90 % of the
market now(my guess).
I'm pretty sure they are able to live comfortably off the small fortune that WJFK paid them for their 5 years. It was a king's ransom, I tells ya.

Consequently they are doing XM purely for shits and giggles.

It's the 3 year anniv of O& A firing from Sex with Sam episode,so
R&F have only been at WJFK for what 2 1/2 years. They lasted at WNEW
for at least until the end of 2002 in NY,RIGHT? Were they paid for a
full 5 years? I just don't see penny-pinching radio stations as that
generous when they shaft the shows on equipment and promotion, and
support.OK they play faves like The Don&Mike show, which win them
drive time ratings....other than that...fickle as a dildo.
quote:Here's a very wild guess on how well-paid R&F are from WJFK vs XM
radio.I have nothing to base this guess on,but later someone can see if
I have a grip on reality.WNEW days I'm guessing 60-80k each per
year.WJFK I'm guessing 80-100k per year.

They definitely got
paid a much more than 120k. For comparison, in the mid-90's when
Don G. got busted with pot, the Washington Post listed his salary at
800+ k...that was nearly ten years ago. Radio pays crap in
comparison to TV and movies, but these guys are all rich by
conventional standards.
Ok ,admittedly I was lowballing in my estimates to get a response.I was
totally unaware that R&F did overnights on WJFK.Since I'm in
Delaware ,unfortunately I am out of WJFK range.Mikey that's good that
you corrected me..because I just had no clue, being stuck smack between
NY and DC.I mostly listened to Philly stations up until 2003 when I
heard D&M ,R&F on Balt stations while
housepainting, originally just because some days Balt signal for Stern
came in stronger.Oddly, the North side of my house gets Philly better
and the south west gets Balt better.
Ron and Fez don't get paid, they are actually using this job to help Fez's brother corky by laundering money from his moonshine business.
