FYI - this weekend the new documentary "Grizzly Man" opens in wide release. In Washington, it's scheduled in four of the local art houses in Virginia, Maryland and in downtown DC.

quote:Grizzly activist Timothy Treadwell spends 13 summers living among his precious bears, until his passion brings about his demise. After many years getting close to grizzly bears and documenting them, Treadwell and his girlfriend are killed and eaten by a grizzly while observing the bears in Alaska. [/quote]
About a month ago Crazy Jen called into Ron and Fez and bet them that this movie would win an Oscar, sight unseen. But not the Oscar for best Documentary, but rather for Best Picture. Of course this is not something that they will even find out about until next winter, but it's in the books.

If Jen wins the bet, she will co-host the show with Fezzie, and Ron stays at home. If she loses (and the odds are stacked against her, since no documentary has ever won for best picture) she will be forced to humilate herself on the street (which, of course, now means NYC and not Fairfax City) wearing a bear costume. She also promised that her "bare" ass will somehow be involved.

The early word on the movie is really good. It is directed by the great German director Werner Herzog but based on last year, when Michael Moore tried like hell to get F911 nominated, I would be surprised.

One of Crazy Jen's dream jobs is owning a hot dog cart.I think that
someone on the boards could make her dream a reality, like the Make a
Wish foundation.NYC streets have some Hot Dog carts that Crazy Jen can
sample hot dogs from while she walks in her Bear Suit/ bare-assed ?
Furtherman, that post made my day before noon.So funny, but now I HAVE TO
SEE IT.That's funnier than Jim Norton as a lumberjack chopping giant
LOGS. I vaguely remember some either mention or clip or some news story
about the guy and his bear proof suit...it shows you how males are
whacky and driven to be inventors and surmount obstacles, whether real
or imagined(Don Quiote complex) To Dreammmm the Impossible Dreammmmm.
Troy Hurtubise is the guy's name. I have the theory that
people's names effect them in very predictable ways. HURT YOU
BEAST Hurt You Bite Hurt You Bites
Hurtubise....do you see where I'm going. The guy's name is repeated to
him all his life and he answers to that name all his life,so it becomes
his IDENTITY and in this case his LIFE's mission statement.
I must find a way to avoid getting HURT from being BITTEN by
frightening bears in my dreams and WIN in the situation, defeat the
Bear...I'm a REAL man facing fear down the throat...JUST LET THAT BEAR
BITE ME and MAUL ME ..I'll build a Bear Suit, yes because I am the ruler
on this planet, the dominant species.I WILL FEAR NO BEAR in my
protective suit.Gotta love a guy who is motivated. LOL
Now I believe I heard about this on Art Bell,George Noory or X-zone
radio in Canada.Troy Hurtubise developed the ANGEL LIGHT which
can see thru walls. It's not very portable, but apparently works. He
built it for $30,000.Maybe he's getting help from ALIENS,but he said
the device came to him in a dream. The angel light had side
effects of disrupting electronics and he stupidly aimed it at his hand
& lost feeling in his finger, though he reported it looked like a
COLOR XRAY,seeing all the inner workings in his own hand.He dismantled
it because of side effects, since he'll rely on others to perfect it and
take out the dangers.

Its wonderful and amazing and it's the circle of life and its all played out on TV and movie Docu's as such, but as Gould put it's it's all beautiful, a beautiful killing machine.

The more I study it, the more beatiful it seems, the more unlikely it seems, and what I see is a cruel but fair system. Fair in that any of the planets life can be snuffed out at any instant, no matter who or who you are, and cruel in that it is indeed a death machine, everything living off killing something, or something that was killed, or died, go on down the line.

The part of Nature that involves big, fierce creatures is one that has been a no-brainer; don't mess with them; you are something to them, but not what we envision with our brains, but the big fierce creature, my guess, sees you either as something to avoid, or something to attack; eithe to protect itself/others, or for food. Rarely do encounters with BFC's end otherwise; you don't read about them avoiding you or running away coz we never notice it; and the poor souls like these folks who were killed and eaten, well there's your headline.

Jon Krackauer, who wrote 'Into Thin Air' about the 91 Everest Disaster, a must-read that will never be made into an adequate movie coz no one who reads it can believe what actually happened, that Beck Weathers lived, oops rambling... anyway he had a book before that, wonderful tome, 'Into The Wild' about a man whose aim was to completely drop out and live it on Nature alone. Highly recommended in light of this story.

I've been wanting to read Into Thin Air. There's another book out there based on the true story of how a guy went into the woods (of a major park) and died. He lived in an abandoned bus and was a mere two miles away from a ranger station (or road, I forget which). The book is based on a diary they found. His hero was Jack London. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I saw a segment on him on Primetime. It wasn't just him who was mauled, but his girlfriend also. Apparently he got very paranoid of hikers and rangers and anyone who came into the area his bears were. He was a little nutso towards the end.

Wow that story reminds me how I once got cornered into driving a big
fat smelly BUM guy back to his "house" in an abandoned school bus in a
woods. He was a real mental case and easily 400 lbs, with nothing to live
for but eating. If I had a video camera and did a documentary on the guy
in the early 80's,I'd have the Discovery Channel knocking down my door
for where the missing link lives.I can only assume that the guy is dead
by now.I almost don't wanna know...just a depressing case.I blanked out
his name in my memory.I doubt that he lived to see 60.I try not to give
rides anymore...learned my lesson.
With Oscar nominations tomorrow, I wanted to remind everyone of Jen's crazy bet from last summer. Since it wasn't made on XM, who knows if it will even be brought up - she actually hasn't even called in since she kicked ass on the football bets last month. I'd love to see her first trip to NYC to visit them on the air be to pay off this bet, however it's not really a pay-off for the XM listeners so who knows unless they do some backstory on it.

Mike Teacher,I enjoyed that Mt Everest book,a few years back. It's funny how it grabbed my interest, like when I used to read Jack London as a kid.The survival against severe nature is mind-grabbing. I hate the cold and would never make that type of journey, and yet I was locked in to the book.I own a thousand books, but many go unread. Here's a Mars animal, where the air is very thin and cold...but LIFE goes on.http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a45/JLehane/BigLiveRedFaceCollagebcrLIVEFACE2.jpg

quote: well talk about straight to tv...
Saw an ad earlier tonight saying it would be on the Discovery Channel later this month/Early next wondering how much is gonna be cut.

I think it's actually on tomorrow night.

Not a complete shock - I imagine it was scheduled like that because someone had hoped it would be nominated, and it wasn't. Most docs never get to be played in theatres - they are lucky if they can find a place on HBO or cable. One of the ones that was nominated for the Oscar screened only in NY & LA theatres, and everywhere else it was shown on PBS.

Steven Sodderberg (the only popular filmmaker I can think of that has always resisted using the phrase "A Film By" on his films) last week released a movie called "Bubble" in theatres, on DVD and on "HDTV" all at the same time (and this time he puts "Another Steven Sodderberg Experience" on the cover). Not a doc, just an example of where things are going.

I'm a big fan of documentaries and I think it's great that each year more and more good ones are being recognized by the public. Last year was particularly strong. It use be that maybe one doc a year would be singled out and get popular, and then around the time of the Academy Awards it would be snubbed (which might happen again if "March of the Penguins" gets beat).

Other popular movies, aside from "Grizzly Man", that didn't get nominated this year: "Mad Hot Ballroom", "Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill", "The Aristrocrats", (maybe) "What The Fuck Do We Know?", and "Wallmart: The High Cost of Low Prices", but that last one really is a well done advocacy movie more than a traditional documentary.
