where they wanted it the past few months... what was down 2% (not that

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The active-duty Army reached its recruiting target for the second straight month in July, but the summertime rebound may not be enough for the service to fulfill its annual goal, according to figures provided by a Pentagon spokesman Wednesday.The Army National Guard, meanwhile, missed its recruiting goal again, recruiting only 4,712, 80 percent of its July goal of 5,920 new Guard members, spokesman Bryan Whitman said. The Guard has hit its target only once in the last 19 months.The U.S. Army Reserve also fell short of its target, recruiting 2,131 new reservists, 82 percent of its goal of 2,585, Whitman said.The Army measures its annual goal from October 2004 to September 2005, which coincides with the federal budget year. The Army is trying to enlist 80,000 by the end of September. After 4 tours with the special ops in Iraq, and three in Afghanistan, I'm sure he'll have a pretty good perspective, especially since last summer, when he was home last, he was told he wouldn't be returning to the big sand box. will stop them from recruiting me ...i really hope the draft doesnt

Do you understand how ridiculous and uneducated you sound? Do you realize both the Air Force and Navy are overmanned, trying to get rid of people? Do you understand the Army just received an increase in end strength authorizations, which requires recruiting more people? Have you considered that any serious push for a draft on Capitol Hill is political suicide? Have you considered that maybe the Army would lower standards as to allow more people in before asking Congress to implement a draft? Do you have any idea how slow bureaucracy moves when implementing a new recruiting system, benefits packages or- pray tell a draft? Have you done any research? Do you know that every single Soldier, Sailor, Airmen and Marine in the AOR knew damn well this could happen; to include the reservist and guardsmen? Do you truly base all your conclusions on one article that is ultimately designed to sell advertising? So while I sit in the box tonight defending your right to be an ignorant ass, I can assure you, being well researched, you don’t have to pack your bags for Ottawa anytime soon.

So while I sit in the box tonight defending your right to be an ignorant ass,I thought you were defending the Iraqis' rights to be ignorant asses.  The United States was never in danger from Iraq.  We should be concentrating on Afghanistan, who was (and still is) a threat to us.And you're right that their won't be a draft.  And you're right about some branches of the armed forces being downsized.  However, the reason for this is to transfer funds to the army and marines, who are doing most of the work in Iraq.  Its the same reason why they are closing bases in Europe.  Its a logical fallacy to believe that a reduction in some branches means a general surplus of soldiers.As for a draft, it might be a good idea.  Currently the majority of recruits come from low income areas or from the middle class who aren't eligible for college loans.  There is definite socio-economic striation in the armed forces, and a draft would serve to even it out.In other words, the rich should have to fight too.

I didn’t recall discussing the budgeting process, although I’ll concede that an increase in funds would follow an increase in end strength. I also don’t recall discussing why we are in Iraq or where we should be or how the U.S. military should be strategically postured. All subjects I’m positive you are an expert on, or at least have the minimal education of the Kennedy School of Government’s Maters of Public Affairs program (look it up—if you don’t know, which I’m sure you don’t). So with that said, I also don’t recall any discussion of a draft being limited to either the Army or Marines. Consider all characteristics of a draft, for as many positives there are negatives. So continue to try and change the subject and again I’ll sit in the box, while you contemplate beer, pot and your overwhelming contribution to society.  P.S. What is rich?  Can you define rich on separate and combined socioeconomic theoretical and actual scales? Or is it more that you heard all your life the rich don’t go into the military, pay taxes, do any work or (insert clich‚ here)…try doing a little research.

Publicly my place is not to question why, how, what or whom. Privately I have my own opinions. What is obvious is we have to deal with the problem as is and figure out why later; and that's being done, you don;t see most of it (well maybe on FOX :) but the reality things are going a lot better than is portrayed. What I despise are people (especially in today’s overly political world) who fail to do their homework and base what they think on a press that is nothing more than entertainment designed to sell advertising. A press that will omit facts, exaggerate truths or manipulates information for the sake of a better story. While I’m here, the free lance journalist, I shouldn’t have snapped at you either, in my boredom I thought I was responding to the dip shit that believes there is going to be a draft, so my bad. I still want to know where that douche is…I’m here all night! I’ll have a PC all night. I guess I shouldn’t think even a douche would sit in a thread all night…shoot me!

Have you considered that maybe the Army would lower standards as to allow more people in before asking Congress to implement a draft?I think they hit the low point but around 99/00.  The ASVAB has about 10 different sections that you get a score for, with 150 being the high I think.  I had GP score of around 137 which was higher then most, but everybody seemed to be somewhere between 110 - 125.  In my later years I was hearing scores around 75 all the time from the new guys.  They were too stupid to realize how stupid they were and just said it like it was normal cause all the other guys they joined with had a similar score.Half the guys showing up could barely read or fill out a simple form.  Then youve got the non-citizens that cant speak the language.  Communication is important in the military, its not like buying a soda and not understanding the guy here.  And DarkHippie, The police in the Air Force are SP's (Special Police, i believe)

no i have never been in
the military but my brother was... I would have gladly joined up but i
have horrible knees and 2 screws in my right knee which woul have
prevented me from serving (cant run or jump because of them)

As for a draft, it might be a good idea.  Currently the majority of recruits come from low income areas or from the middle class who aren't eligible for college loans.  There is definite socio-economic striation in the armed forces, and a draft would serve to even it out.Having served in our all volunteer force I couldn't agree more. I firmly believe there should be a draft...whether its peacetime or not. The wealthy and the politicians need to have sons and daughters at risk. Its only fair that everyone serve. If they are not physically qualified for the military then some form of service should be mandatory. No exemption...no deferrments..(although after the fiasco of Vietnam those won't happen again) Serving your country whether in the military or the peace corps is an honor...one we should bestow on all citizens.

consider how good it would work to take people who dont want to be
there and stick them into that, you are basically just gonna be sending
people to die. or to have 10,000 soldiers who dont support the war
spread out on missions risking the lives of the people who do want to
serve. thats real smart
