Love, love, love, LOVE the movie...but both "new" editions are complete wastes of money. The box set comes with extra items like a towel for your bowling ball, but meh, who gives a shit? The movie only edition has only ONE new feature...a short "behind the scenes" doc that wasn't on the first version. And that's it. What a rip! I wanted a Coen Borthers commentary! Or one by Bridges! Or ANY of the cast! If you're gonna call it a "special edition," make it special, jerkstores!

Nope. Besides, is there really anything to remaster? It came out less than a decade ago and the Coens have stunning production values in the first place. It's really just a blatant attempt by the studio to ring up some dollars on a cult classic.

Trust me, I was thrilled when I first read this was getting re-released, but we got both editions in my store yesterday and looking them over, NOTHING new of actual content outside of the one short special I mentioned above.

The re-issues are getting out of hand. There should be two labels

1. "This DVD contains shitloads of deleted scenes, commentaries, making of docus, a looking back docu, all the trailers, a couple of videos, and the kitchen sink, none of which were available on DVD ever before"

which is the case with some re-issues. Or...

2. "This DVD contains shitloads of stuff. But it was all on the DVD before it. The only thing we did was make the 'making of' docu a bit longer, and slapped an Anniversary Edition on instead of the original art, to make it look different, but its not. Enjoy buying this movie for the 14th time."

I bought the 30th anniversary Jaws DVD. The difference betwee it and the old one? The making of docu was longer.

The re-issue of 'The Deer Hunter' that looks so bad ass. Bought it, and the extras are some deleted footage of the russian roulette scene, but thats it. And were not talking more then, if memory serves, more then 15-20 mins footage, tops.

Sorely disappointed with both.

=

Back to the movies of Ethan and Joel, if you havent seen Fargo, do so now. Closest to Lebowski, IMO

If you havent seen Barton Fink, please please do so now. Anyone remotely involved with the creative process knows why this movie is a stunning look inward into the process, while doing the process.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? Masterpiece. Run at a high rate of speed and see this yesterday. The Coen zenith, for moi.

You hated it? I understand, and disagree.

Don't leave out Miller's Crossing, Blood Simple and The Man Who Wasn't There. There's not a person alive who can make better crime noir flicks.

I just can't miss any chance to prop up the Coens. Easily my favorite filmmakers working today, and quite possibly the best, too. The remake of The Ladykillers was a big misstep, but hey, when you've made as many impossibly great films as they have, they're allowed to finally have an off day. I have no doubt they'll be back on their game in no time.

And yes, Intolerable Cruelty was good. Not one of their greats, but I'll be damned if I see it slammed as being terrible like many want to do just because of the shitty trailers that advertised it. It had a very different feel and voice, mainly because it wasn't their own story, but overall I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. They've got two films lined up back to back for 2006 and 2007 (they usually pair up their films back to back)...the first is Hail Ceaser, a comedy about a theater troupe in the 20's performing Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, and then a crime noir drama called No Country For Old Men, about a WW2 vet getting tangled up in a plot involving murder, heroin and a ton of cash.

Dancing with the women at the bar... << He knows his Claret from his Beaujolais >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

There seems to be a real flood of re-re-released "special edition" DVDs. Even more than previous years at Xmas time.

Every DVD is being promoted as "extreme version" or "unrated" but with little or no noticeable difference in content. Even the Directors themselves don't really appreciate that these movies are being repackaged. In a few cases, they seem to be doing the commentary tracks against their will! "Yeah...I don't really know why we're doing this 10 years after the movie is released" or "there really is no difference between this version and the theatrical cut". etc etc.

Everything from Tommy Boy to Shawshank Redemption is getting the ol' "let's milk it for all it's worth" treatment from the studios. I mean, that movie SAW just got re-released on special edition DVD!!

And yes, Star Wars is also getting re-re-rereleased again and FOX actually has the balls to advertise "new collectible packaging!"

had a movie only version until the 10th Anniversary version. So
their Special Edition is truly an upgrade.

On the other hand, the

being backwards on some tracks) with the excpetion of the 4th dvd,

Yeah was alittle disspointed when i read reviews for this set online and saw all the really added was some photos jeff bridges took, and 3 minute intro speech kinda like they had for Blood Simple. Nothing but a case of double dipping.
If you love the big lebowski do yourself a favor and rent Robert Altman's version of The Long Goodbye. think of it as a precursor to the The Big Lebowski, and make sure to look for a very early apperance by the governor of California. Elliot Gould was such the man back in the 70's.
