A Decade Of Underrated Movies
Some good picks on this list. I enjoyed Dark Blue. Dead Man is a great, creepy movie.
Office Space? I don't think that is underrated, in fact, it's dangerously close to becoming overrated because everyone has seen it 17 times.
American Psycho... ehhh...
I'm curious to check out The Brown Bunny, Mr. Jealousy and The Underneath.
I'll pass on Josie and The Pussycats.

My pick from the last decade: Primer

Red Rock West with Nicholas Cage and Dennis Hopper. Nobody has ever heard of it and anybody I ever get to watch it loves it.Maybe Cage's best performance.

when i saw the thread title. first movie that came to mind was American Psycho. No one thinks of this movie when christian bale is mentioned, but i think he was terrific in it.

Now I may be way off on this next one, but I feel liek I NEVER hear any one talk about, even though there are great actors in it.

Heat. never gets the respect it deserves.

I love Heat. The only gripe I've heard occasionally it that is it too long, but I think overall, among movie buffs, Heat holds its own.

That kind of reminds me Michael Mann's Collateral.

I felt I was lucky enough to see it in the theater right before it left for DVD. Great movie. Very well written, acted and directed. Beautifully shot.

I know it did pretty well at the box office, but I think it should have generated a little more heat.

For all those knocking Josie and the Pussycats, have you
actually seen it. It's on the list for a reason. It really
is suprisingly good. It was not done like Scooby-Doo, The
Flintstones, or any of the other cartoon to Live Action Full Length
Movies. See it. You'll enjoy it. Also see Drop Dead
Gorgeous. I'll stake my reputation on them.

Starship Troopers is on UPN (movie edit) as I type this. Definitely has some of that comic undertone that Robocop had. Plus it has Doogie Howser.

I never considered American Psycho underrated -- too many people I know have seen it and like it. Before Batman Begins came out and Christian Bale came up, it was always "the guy from American Psycho" and everyone knew who you were talking about.

Oddly, I have three movies for the list featuring the same actor: October Sky (inspirational), Bubble Boy (laugh like an tard), Donnie Darko (mind f**k) - all with Jake Gyllenhal (sp?). I will watch any of them whenever I catch them on TV.

Maybe it was the age i was at and I was just not paying much attention

=

Again, like with so much of Carpenter's horror work, Michael Mann missed it by *that* much with Heat.

For me, it's fucking brilliant from first shot to last, but that's just me; I'm into the all location, no soundstage approach Mann took, and the locations he found were fantastic. Add in a soundtrack ranging from those Kronos Quartet strings that begin it [the group that does the strings peeps mentioned before in Requiem for a Dream...] to Moby's 'God Moving Across the face of the Waters' thats ends the flick; I dont know much of Moby's stuff but this instrumntal piece just floors me.

Also, there's what many say is, and here's one youd think youd never hear from critics, but too many characters, and too much development of each, or that Mann tries to develop all of these ancillary characters outside of the Crew: Judd, Azaria, Amy Brenneran, the Bond Trader I cant remember his name, the last minute get away driver, Natalie Portman; makes for a shitload of scenes that are dialouge heavy with not much action, which is the movies best stuff.

And it's sorts two movies, in which Deniro and Pacino rarely overlap onscreen.

Fantastic set pieces, the beginning job, 'making' the cops, , the blown metals job stakeout, and of course, the Far East bank scene, which I could watch a zillion times and not tire of.

And Collaterol for me seemed an attempt to re-do much of it, somewhere else I posted pics of DeNiro's Neil McCauley and Cruises character. Cruise is made up as DeNiro down to the last detail.

=

I'd call the original Gojira aka Godzilla 1954 [?] is under-rated here in the US. Maybe seen as a throw away, the addition of Raymond Burr I can see as perhaps necesary for a US audience, but somewhere way back I got a copy of the original uncut Japanese version subtitled, and watching it you can see this wonderful, dark, brooding, hopeless, flick. Sure its guys in rubber suits but fuck it, I love the damn thing.

I celebrate the entire Gamera catalog.
I know Mickey Rourke is kinda back in the spotlight thanks to Sin City, but the guy is easily one of the most underused and underappreciated actors since the 80's, and he starred in two MASSIVELY underrated films before he went nuts and quit acting for boxing in the early 90's...the first:

GodDAMN, I love this movie. Basically Se7en way before Se7en, but with a bizarre supernatural twist. Yeah, those FX in the last few scenes are pretty bad, but the movie itself is a perfect piece of noir. Watch for the "egg scene" with Rourke and DeNiro and see two great actors working their craft in a movie that's still criminally ignored. Rourke also ruled the school in...

I know Ron has mentioned both of these flicks on the show before, and has summed up Pope... better than I ever could, but damn, I never get tired of this flick. Eric Roberts is phenomenal here, just as good as he was in the ALSO sadly forgotten...

It's a fucking shame that Roberts' great early work is overshadowed by all the crappy B-movies he's done since, and by his horsefaced sister, but you won't find better turns by an actor than what he did in the two films above. Guy deserves another shot at the big roles...

Some of the not-so-well-known movies i have always enjoyed would be:

Marooned I can never recall the name of the actor who stars in this baby, but it's about a space ship adrift in space. The thing is carrying the last remaining plants from Earth, which got it's ass blowed up. So this dude is basically the gardener being made fun of by others in the crew and he kills them and gradually goes nuts! nuts! nuts!

Repo Man Always dug this lil' number, not a great movie or anything, but there's some cheap thrills init and some good lines.

Mystery Train My first Jim Jarmulch film, besides really enjoying the city of Memphis anyways, this one is just plain cool.
I finally saw Boondock Saints not too long ago, and I'm sorry to say, I found it very OVERrated. Not that it's a bad film, it's not, but it rather underwhelmed me. I suppose I had heard too many things about it and set my expectations too high. Still, Willem DaFoe is terrific in that.

And Brown Bunny IS a piece of shit. It's only good for one scene, and we all know what that is.

Yes, I've seen a lot of comparisons between Saints and Tarantino, but I don't see it. Tarantino's films are superior, though I'm not really a big fan of the guy.

Speaking of Tarantino and overrated, I'd go with the Kill Bill films. It's not that I didn't like them, I like them fine as an homage to a lot of the cult films of yesteryear that obviously influenced Tarantino when he was younger, but a lot of people (on the net at least) think those films are cool as shit, and I just don't see it.

But there I've gone and temporarily hijacked the thread by talking about overrated movies instead of underrated ones.

Maybe I'll go with "City of God" as underrated. Not underrated by critics, but a lot of ordinary people may not have seen it or be that knowledgeable of it, particularly because it's a foreign film. But holy fuck, that's one terrific movie. I rented it a few weeks back, and it's one of the best films I've seen in a long time.
