 I was actually
thinking about writing the mother that Beck's opponent were using in
their attack ads, mocking the fact that she sold out her son's memory
for NOTHING.  I'm evil like that, but goddamn, that ad pissed me

 Considering
the state is home to some major pharmaceutical companies, I'm guessing
that the state can subsidize meds at a lot cheaper of a pricetag than
200 million dollars.I know meds are expensive, but the flipside
is that there really aren't that many people with mental problems
WITHOUT INSURANCE in the state to justify that kind of money, WHEN
THERE ARE MUCH MORE PRESSING MATTERS.  I'm sorry.  There's no
way you can justify that kind of money.Plus - HE WHORED OUT HIS
WIFE.  Meanwhile, he was a state worker at the time of all of her
problems, so it's not like she would have gotten help from this bill
anyway; state workers have some of the best benefits of all employees. Sorry.  It doesn't wash.

incredibly corrupt cities in Newark and Camden,  and this goof
wants 200 mill for a cause that affects him and a small minority? 
Sorry.  Again, it just doesn't work. Don't forget, one
of the main reasons that Codey's approval got up so high is because he
had a Newark Star Ledger reporter shadow him when he confronted one of
the most polarizing people in the state over comments made about his
wife.  Quite Machievellian.

problem, all of a sudden they're being taken advantage of. NO, YOU ARE
BEING CONFRONTED WITH REALITY.She
may have not been helped by the bill but it was an example of what

few of these people there are, ignoring them is absolutely
unconscionable to some of us.

I actually met Codey a few times of late as he worked to get these mental health issues taken care.  His work was really well reeceived in an area which has historically been underfunded, even in New Jersey.  I work in the mental health field and he's a hero right now to the many clinics and patient advocate groups who were promised help nationally from Bush and never got it.  Codey made some bold, if not most of the time unpopular moves that gained my respect.  He was a really down to earth guy and even gave us his fucking cell number in case we ever needed his ear in his few remaining days.  This guy really impressed me, even if we don't agree on all the issues.  I'm with H in that as of now he'd have my vote if he ran.

 Oh,
that is a load of garbage.  The hot-button topics are property
taxes and corruption.  Considering that was the platform that BOTH
candidates ran on.  NOT meds for mentally imbalanced people. 
Health care in NJ wasn't even a major issue that either candidate
stumped for.

costs were MORE THAN MY CAR PAYMENT. Yet the Arkhams of New

OK, let's say he tried to get this bill passed without Mary Jo going
on WNBC and saying that she wanted to put her kid into a
microwave. Do you think he would have gotten the public support
needed? No. He sold out his wife for a political gain, just
like the mother of the kid who died in the DUI accident sold out the
memory of her son for a political machine.

Since when isn't mental health a major part of the health care picture.  It's the least funded area of health care bc it isn't as profitable for private business (clinics) and or hospitals.  In fact, most area hospitals care so little about the public and only profits that countless hospitals have tried to close down their psych wings/floors despite glaring needs and legal ramifications.  Valley Hospital's floor is down, Englewood was close but the state had to jump in and deny it due to very sparse coverage, HUMC is trying everything they can to reduce its floor while still keeping the "comprehensive" hospital coverage claim so it can be Presbyterian on the west side of the Hudson.  This has left huge coverage gaps for the mentally ill in Bergen County alone, and it's happening all throughout the state.  Drug costs account for only 10-15% of the overall health care cost landscape (all areas of health care) with hospitalization being the biggest percentage and testing close thereafter.  Factor in that these pharmaceuticals usually keep hospitalizations down, the drugs usually pay for themselves (eg. BP meds, Statins for cholestrol levels and of course drugs for mental health such as depression, bipolar and schizophrenia).  Let's then add in the secondary factors of the criminal costs that many times come in to play with untreated mental health patients (most times bc these pats are neglected and swept aside by these under performing/funded systems) and the overall cost is compounded.  I guess it just happens and we need not deal with the physical issues in the brain that lead to these conditions.  Don't be so ignorant as to think this wasn't a step in the right direction or at least an issue worth addressing bc you think you pay too much in property taxes.  No shit.  We all know that.  Yet just by reading the way you wrote what you did, with your bolded words and verbiage, shows you're condescending nature to those with mental health issues.  Since when did heart disease trump neuropsychiatric syndromes?  Psychopharm is as real and physically a problem as narrowed arteries.  There just isn't the stigma attached to the later that you seem to suscribe to.

If Codey put together a
comprehensive health care package, I'd be applauding him.  He
didn't.  If you take a look at some of Codey's bills, (the
aforementioned removal of "acting" from his title for his time in
office) you know that he's a BIT self-centered. We've got too many problems in the state. And
as for your accusation that my tone and verbiage is condescending and I
don't understand the problem and I look down upon the mental health
field and the stigma it carries... Considering you know, um, about zero
about my personal life, and what I share on this board about my
personal life is about the extent you know, that's an incredibly BALLSY
fucking statement to make - and unfortunately, big shock - completely
and total crap. 
My bile in this thread has been saved pretty much exclusively
for the Democratic machine of New Jersey.  Not once did I mock
mentally disturbed people in this thread.  The closest I came was
using the term "Arkham".My grandmother died from complications
of colon cancer.  Her cancer was misdiagnosed and because her
colon cancer became advanced, she needed to get a colonostomy. 
(insert King of Comedy picture here) Now, does that
mean when I become governor of New Jersey, I can personally earmark 200
million dollars of tax payers money to be funnelled into making sure
that we have the best colon cancer care in the United State so
something that happened to my grandmother doesn't happen to
others?  Sure, I could, but at what cost?  How selfish does
that make me look?  Shouldn't I try to expand on that program and
make sure the 200 million is used in the best ways possible to avoid
wasteful spending and that as many people in the state get some sort of
use out of the money I spent? That's the point I'm getting at.

 Because in the
game of politics, the best ones serve the entire public need, not just
their own interests.  Codey's plan was using public money to serve
one minority that affected him, while denying the potential use of
those funds to other people in a majority who needed it.

I've heard Brits, Germans, Swiss, Belgians, Australians, etc complain about their medical systems. But when they're done, they look at me and say: "but at least we don't have your system." diabetes reserch, these things help EVERYONE in a pretty direct way. In
the case of meds for the deranged, maybe you feel that doesn't affect
you, until some deranged nutbag who's off his meds because he can't
afford it robs, rapes or kills someone you care about, but because you
appear to lack empathy, and the ability to put yourself in someone
else's shoes, you simply can't grasp that.as a society, we are
like a chain that is only as strong as it's weakest link. People like
me want to make every link as strong as possible, people like you want
to thow the weak ones away. Sooner or later, you'll be down to one
link, and that's not much of a chain, is it?plus, you're going
on about $200 million like that is a big number to state politicians.
You know when $200 million is a big number to them? When it's election
season and they want to scare you with numbers.

administration costs are far less tha the average private insurance
company. I don't know the exact number, but I believe it is something
like 5% of Medicare's costs are administrative and on average,
administration is 17% of private insurance companies
costs.
