NYC is turning into fucking Disneyworld! Landlord raises rent from 24grand to 33grand a month. Owner closes up shop after 50 years. Ther is no better Pastrami on rye in NY. Carnegie Deli is a poor 2nd choice. Here comes dunkin donuts and starbucks.
I say sweeping the pockets of the Dutchman was not Mob business!

<p>All the landlords hear what other places in the neighborhood are getting, so then they want the same. But I work all around the city, including the East Villiage, and there are so many empty stores its not funny. At some point, they'll realize even if they can GET someone to pay more, they wont be able to stay in business long paying those kind of rates, and the market will come back down to earth. THis is NYC real estate, shit like this has been going on forever. <br /></p><p>Dont worry Mendy, I'm sure the Leberwohls will reopen again somewhere soon. I've heard he's planning on doing so, and they have such an excellent reputation. And thats too valuable to just throw away. <br />The owner was also saying the current site needed lots of $$ in repairs, and he may just want to rent (or buy) elsewhere. <br /></p>

<p>you're fucking crazy. the landlord didn't raise the rent at all.</p><p>the rent increase was built into the the lease signed by 2nd ave deli and the previous owner 15 years ago.</p><p>the current ownership group which closed on the deal last year had every right to expect that the lease would be honored. after all martin newman said in the new york times recently "they get 17.50 for a tongue sandwich!!"</p>

And people wonder why we stay out of NYC. Dirty, crowded and way too expensive.

"they get 17.50 for a tongue sandwich!!"
<p></p>
yeah well they'd need to sell nearly 2,000 tongue sandwichs just to cover the rent.

I'm sure it is just a matter of time before the Empire State building becomes a Wal-Mart.
