So, I live right in the smack of the NYC Metro market.

I have a four year college degree, and a decent job.

I always used to put what my music choices were, "Anything but country and rap".

The
funny part about it is, I never LISTENED to country or rap to give it a
fair shake. I always couldn't see past the ethnic and cultural
stereotypes that penetrated the fans of the music.

So
tonight, I'm loading my brand new Ipod, and I'm seeing the usual
songs... your ACDC, your Audioslave, your Toby Keith, your Kenny
Chesney, your Trace Adk...

Uh-oh.

Somehow, I've turned into a massive country fan and never even realized it.

I blame XM's Highway 16.

All we get over here are two AFN satellite radio stations. One plays the same 20 Top 40 songs on a loop. The other is a contemporary country station. And, of course, everybody wants the country station. Every time it is on, I envy Beethoven his deafness.

I suppose there's good modern country music to be found, but I do agree with whoever it was (Sorry I don't remember) who said country generally hasn't been any good since the early 90's. That, to me was country's last hoorah before it mostly turned right to shit, not that half the songs were listenable then, either.

Now Tenbats, all you've got to do is break the color barrier and enjoy some rap music with your country. If you've never tried any, good luck! If you get sick of today's radio, rap (and especially rap stations)isn't any better today than any other broadcast drivel, but some of the older stuff is phenomenal, say circa 1992-1998. After that it's VERY hit and miss--to me only. Good luck in your own music search!

I find the hip-hop from France is pretty damn good believe it or not. But you'll be setting yourself up for a lot of criticism. Sniper being the best group, but also contreversial. They've taken some heat for being a bad influence for the disenchanted rioting youth of France.
They're really good, because they dont do it as a goof. They do it as straight Bluegrass, which actually makes it even funnier.

On a similar note, Paul Anka recently did a CD "Rock Swings" where he did songs like Black Hole Sun, Jump and Smells Like Teen Spirit. And its great, because he didn't do it as a goof album (like Pat Boone did). He treated them like any other standard and arranged them with a big band. And the album is a blast. Read the reviews on Amazon.

As far as a bluegrass/country meld goes, I've been singing the praises of Alison Krauss and Union Station for years....

I've had their live album for close to three years now and still listen to it at least once a month...
