View Full Version : Making a Mental Leap

I work with this guy who for the most part, strikes me as intelligent. But lately I have been discovering that he is incapable of making a "mental leap". What I mean is, for job functions, he works within the scope of his job and its definitions as to do only what is expected of him. But if he encounters a problem that requires a "mental leap" to find a solution, he is absolutely lost and becomes very angry and adamant that it is 'not his job' to make suppositions. It is maddening to me, because I am the complete opposite. I have to work with him and it is very stressfull to me because I am new and when I find a problem, I need to go to him for guidence because he knows more than me, but I have been reluctant to approach him on certian things because of his limitation.
How would you deal with it? Obviously I am trying to learn the job without asking him anything because he gets very loud (and he is very effiminate) and I dont want to make a scene. Pretty much every day he has a fit over something he encounters on his own, so I avoid him and his inabilities whenever I can.

maybe he doesn't take the mental leap because he has yet to set right what once went wrong.

Why is it so quiet in here all of the sudden?

He is someone who thinks everything is not 'his job'.

I have a problem with people who cant see beyond what they are presented with. I can look at things and see different possibilities, where as he does not have the ability to see beyond the thing he is looking at. When I work on something, I am anticipating what will be the result of what Im doing. I like to be able to discuss what ramifications certian changes will make if I implement them, but he will not allow it, because he is incapable of seeing beyond anything other than what he knows. I can think about things I dont know! I want to be able to bring it to the table, but he flips out. He is blocking my creativity.

Distance yourself from him, he's going to get fired with a piss poor work ethic like that.

Does he just not care or is he afraid of making mistakes? If
he just doesn't care about anything other than the day-to-day, then
maybe it's better to get what knowledge you can from him and keep your
distance otherwise. What does your manager think about the
situation? How long has he been with the company?
Sorry, it isn't my job to help you with your problems...
kidding!
I think you should tell the guy that right now, it's part of his job to help you out, seeing that you're new. If he can't do that, it's not going to make yours OR his job easier. If he refuses to cooperate, you should probably tell your boss of his unwillingness to help you out so he can take care of the guy for you. You don't need to be confused or uncomfortable working because this guy is inept and a dick.

dude, I work for the government. people here can not think "outside of the box". Nor can they perform any job function not described in their job title. both because they can't and because they won't.
