I think its hard to let go of the stars and bars just because it looks so damn cool.

That was a really good segment today...mainly because they brought both sides in on the issue...

Here's the thing. Knowing my reputation on this board as de facto Southern dandy and apologist, one would think i'd be all up in arms to defend the flag on this one....

But i'm not....I HATE HATE HATE demagouges on ANY issue...left or right...i'm not one of those wacko "the south will rise again" dopes, nor do i take the other side, and compare my beloved South with Nazi Germany....

I agree with that one caller who pointed out the battle flag portrayal is historically inaccurate. The Confederate States of America had three national flags (not at the same time), and a flag units used in battle

The First National Flag:

http://www.capitolflags.com/images/flag%20pictures/confed-first-nat-flag.gif

This is actually the "Stars and Bars"...not the St. Andrews Cross Battle Flag...this was dumped because it looked too much like the US Flag

The Second National Flag:

http://www.capitolflags.com/images/flag%20pictures/confed-second-nat-flag.gif

This was dumped because when it hung from its staff, looked too much like a flag of truce, so they added a jazzy vertical red bar on the end for the last edition

So in that sense, they probably should have had a National Flag on there instead of the battle flag...

Now as for the caller who called us "traitors" i have to rebut that by pointing out the Civil War was not actually a "civil war"...In "civil wars" one side is forcibly trying to throw out the existing government, which was not the goal of the Confederate States of America, which had its own Constitution, laws, & etc. It was an internal secession movement that sought to separate itself from the United States Government and form its own government, much like the Revolution from Britain (which is why among the 10,000 different names for the conflict is "The Second American Revolution")

I guess this raises more questions about the nature of "being offended" in our society and the power that gives to certain people. I remember O n' A used to bring up all the time when WOW got banned in Boston that it was just a bunch of people getting together and writing a letter with a fancy letterhead that spooked Dave Dickless into making them stop...

How far should we/do we have to go as a society to avoid offending people? Is it even something we should actively seek? Should a few people upset over something have the power to force people to change things that they personally don't like?

What I do know is that the citizens of the State of Mississippi voted to keep the flag, and being the staunch defender of States Rights that I am, whatever choice the citizens of that state make is the choice they make...they have to live there, not me (unfortunately....i hear they have really really really hot chicks at Ole Miss)...If the people of Mississippi wake up tomorrow and decide they want to change their flag, God Bless 'em...and if they want to make the battle flag more prominent, good for them...its their choice....

But I think it was Fezzie who did make a really good point about all the federal monies tied up in states now adays....yeesh....

Usually we do 'Ask the Teacher' so we can free form the good stuff, but me trying to explian the biochemical basis of love was weak. As to the 'What the Bleep Do we Know?!' movie, I agree, its almost all psuedoscience crap, but it has a good segment on emotions as being similar to addictions that I was taking about.

For better or worse, Ron loves to run w/ a bit, so when CJ called I had no problem letting the call go as long as it did. Ron does what he does, and I'll defer to him as to what best at any given moment for the R+F show. He saw I was getting into it; the fake Wiki had us all laughing like hell. Earl books Michel Gondry (director of Human Nature, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and many music videos) to be on the show, and then says at the beginning of the show he'll definitely be on, and then at the time he was supposed to be there Earl says he's on the way. Ron said at the beginning of the show there's no way Gondry will show up. A couple of minutes after Earl said Gondry is on is way he says he cancelled. Ron gets pissed and extends Earl's double secret probation and then starts giving everyone on the show, including Fez, double secret probation, and then starts giving the callers probation. Funny bit.
