View Full Version : I yelled at a waiter

With my background, I'm usually very cool with servers. They always get at least a 20 percent tip, and if I like them, it'll probably be 30 percent.

On Saturday I went to a restaurant and I was really pissed off with how bad the service was, especially considering how dead the restaurant was. (There was a bunch of servers "on" and there was only four or five tables)

I let it slide because I was in a pretty good mood. It's very very rare I get a bad server, so I just rolled with it.

On Sunday, my group went to Applebee's. Now, this was a Sunday night at 9PM, and even for a Holiday Sunday night, the place was NOT that busy. We all sat down, we were having a good time, and then our server came up about 7 minutes after we were seated.

This is a HUGE no-no. You should be at the table within 2-3 minutes. He took our drink and appetizer order, and we were set to go.

(Now, we didn't order any booze, so there was no reason to go to the bar)

The appetizer was out 5 minutes later - delivered by a runner, not our server - but no drinks. We ate half the appetizer before the drinks arrived, and now I was REALLY pissed off, and a lot of anger from Saturday's meal was transferring over. A huge tell on him letting the drinks sit was that I ordered an ice tea - and the ice was melted in the tea. Which meant that the drinks were sitting somewhere.

He took our meal order, and we went from there.

Again, the food came out late - delivered AGAIN by a runner - and it was obvious it had been sitting under a food light.

Now I'm FUMING.

Strike 3 - server takes the order from the table next to us, DOESN'T CHECK ON US or the party of eight he has in his section, then goes BACK to the Hostess desk TO CHECK ON THE CUT ORDER FOR THE NIGHT. BTW, the party of 8 wanted dessert, and we needed another round of drinks.

I get up, and ask the hostess to see a manager, and I talk to her calmly and rationally about what happened. She was apologetic, but not that much. She took the app off, which was fine, but I was more annoyed by the server.

In the time I was talking to the manager, I noticed that the table next to us - who had gotten a drink order - WAS STILL WAITING FOR THEIR DRINKS.

Finally the server came up. "I'm sorry about the wait sir..."

I was like, "Sorry for the wait? How long have you been serving?"

Him: "A while..."

Me: "Then you should know better than letting people get their appetizer before their drinks, not checking on a table AT ALL, and to make matters worse, you were more concerned about going home for the night then the welfare of the tables who are paying a majority of your salary. I understand that with a party of 8 that you're getting an automatic tip, but it's still pretty messed up that you're letting ALL the tables in your section twist in the wind."

(I said this in a very even voice and smiling. I wasn't yelling at all, but I was letting him have it because bad service is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. The thing was, that really annoyed me, that he didn't check on the table at all - he took two orders. He didn't deliver any food, didn't check, didn't bother. And the restaurant wasn't that busy. Horrible.)

When all was said and done, I still gave him a 15% tip, because he had to endure me yelling at him.

BTW, when we left, the table that was next to us that put in their drink order?

They still didn't have their drinks yet.

Why did you tip him at all? Fuck that guy.

I don't care WHAT you do, have some pride in your work. If your job is putting up a sheetrock wall, take pride. If your job is answering a phone, take pride. If your job is to wait on a table, have some fucking pride. IF you don't like your jib, go get another one.

I would have yelled at the guy and left a dollar, seriously.

You should have left a $10 bill that you wiped your ass with. I hate waiters with attitude.

Reason I went to Applebee's - only restaurant that's open that late on a Sunday going home, outside of fast food.

When bar drinks are late, the kitchen is behind, ALL STUFF out of the server's control - I understand COMPLETELY. I once got dinner 30 mins late because the kitchen was understaffed. I gave the server 30 percent because she explained the situation to me and brought us chips and salsa to keep us occupied.

This guy's problems were COMPLETELY in his realm of control.

I am actually never going back to that particularly applebee's again.

And Moe - the reason why I tipped him is because in chain restaurants, a percentage of the tips go to Busboys and the bar. So I left him the tip because I didn't want other people suffering for his fuckups.

luckily ESD wasn't your waiter, you may have had extra protein added to your dessert

it's cool you spoke up and also that you gave a tip. you have to do what makes you feel alright...

last week i got a little upset with a doctor who had performed same-day surgery on my pop. we had a two hour trip to get to Christ Hospital by 8:30. here it was 6pm and my dad and i are waiting on the doctor to come to the room, give us an update on how the surgery went and answer other questions, give the okay for a bag of antibiotics which would keep us there another half hour. mind you in the previous two days i got 4 hours sleep due to being on-call with work all hours of the night.

by this time everyone else had come and gone. i had the nurse call the doctor at 5:15 and ask when he was arriving, he said "10 minutes". I knew it was a lie. 45 minutes later he shows up. Anyway the he met me in the waiting room and i looked him dead in the eye and asked him

"do you know the difference between 10 minutes and 45 minutes" and then waited for an answer. if he wasn't an older gentleman maybe mid 50's and apologetic i would have ripped into him a bit more

what are you gonna do?

i spent alot of time in my van listening to OnA and RnF which made the long day and wait more tolerable. and have to admit i love hospital coffee shops and cafeterias, getting some soup, sandwich, and a coffee. just some of life's simple pleasures...

Tenz, as a former waiter, I have to say you were 100% in the right to tell this guy how badly he worked.

You were not rude, just stating facts. He sounded really horrible and you did nothing wrong.

After the way he acted he would have been lucky to get 10% from me.

You offered to pay, and I'd be a fool not to accept, seeing as I am a poor college student.
I know it is easy to give NOTHING but you have to also take into account he is also tipping out the barstaff and the food runners with that money you give him. You would be stiffing them also, which is not fair at all. That 10% would be mostly for them and then leave him with nothing!

Well then maybe the rest of the wait staff should police their own, take this kid out behind a dumpster and teach him a lesson.

Tip nothing.

I believe that Fez's fiance in Ontario is also a waitress at Applebees. Has she move to the states yet? How long is this engagement?
