how can you build a pyramid without the callers calling in?

As best as I heard it explained, and maybe it's total BS, but someone on one of the shows said it was not the XM part of the system, it's part of the NYC phone system, so it's NYC that has to do something first before it gets fixed.

Or, maybe XM is quietly saying, as they said in Animal House...

"You fucked up; you trusted us...'

It seemed like Ron was begging if any of the listeners had expertise in phone issues and had given up on receiving help from XM.

I know nothing about the internal politics of XM Corp. and next to nothing about telecom but I'm willing to bet one of Perrynoid's kidneys that the bottleneck to the solution is (drum roll) -

Surprise! - money.

From the little I know about telecom, if volume is blowing up the system you don't have enough "pipe" (bandwidth, switches, etc.) dedicated for your use. They probably can't add marginal capacity and have to upgrade the whole system which can cost anywhere from 5 to 6 figures. Given Wall Street's spotlight on XM's "runaway" costs (the reason that Director resigned so publicly a few weeks ago) there is probably a hold on all capital projects that don't add directly to revenues (the same reason there are the old cubicles outside the studio instead of stages and stripper poles a la O&A's complaints). Are any of us going to drop XM just because the phones blow up on R&F? I don't think so and neither do Hugh Panero and whoever the CFO is. The situation is also probably not helped by the fact that NY is a branch office for XM, unlike Sirius.

On the bright side, just think how much more quickly Stern's Taj Mahal contract and studio will sink Sirius. Then maybe XM can buy up their set-up on the cheap.

Just one corporate drone's opinion. I could be all wrong so it's a good thing Perrynoid has two kidneys.

Actually it turned out that the band that played on all of ELO's records was Jeff Lynn

kind of an ealrier day trent Reznor

and thatis todays bit of usless muiscal knowledge....now back to ur regularly scheduled problem...the phones.

If the phones are part on some kind of internet hookup or somehting I read earlier, someone nailed it earlier...there is nothing $ can't fix. Whether it be equipment, or people to properly run them or even a budget for things needed for bits on the show....example.....a jar of mayo like on Cinco De Mayo and slices of ham....thae led to on of the funniest bits of Al being tied og and gagges and Rob Halford of Judas Priest Walking in and getting all gayed up over Al

all for the price of a jar of mayo and quarter pound of ham. (which a quest of hours started to eat during the break and i had to stop him...unreal)

anyway...fun reminiscing....but key to a good show...make and keep the hosts happy.....very simple

I'm guessing that the "lines" for 866-RON-0-FEZ were added to the system that already handled O&A's calls, and probably shares the same hardware in the studio.

Whatever phone service they have (Verizon/Bell/?) probably just added them from their office, and might never have altered the actual phone lines or equipment in the building. There's a real good chance it's not actual lines, but data that routes through a server which obviously can't handle the load.

The phone system, like Earl, freaks out when there is too much going on and has to be reset. I can almost picture the phones rocking back and forth mumbling like Rainman.

Actually, my business is telecom and data networks. Here's how this works with respect to Verizon or whichever company is providing dial tone to the XM studios in NYC.

Odds are that XM has the studios and at least 20-25 desks at that location. That being the case, phone service is likely delivered on DS-1 circuits. Each DS-1 is 24 phone lines (23 if its a PRI, but thats geek stuff). The telco routes incoming calls from the servicing central office down that DS-1 pipe, where the call is handed off to the XM telephone system. When a DS-1 gets full (all 24 channels in use), the call rolls to the first open channel on another DS-1. If there are no more empty channels, you get a fast busy signal.

Its that simple. The telephone network does not crash due to the volume of calls coming in to the Ron & Fez show, which represents probably 0.001 percent of all the calls handled through that telco switch at any given time.

My guess is that the XM telephone system in the NYC office is crashing.

Or, the calls might actually go to Washington DC before getting routed via IP to NYC. XM would put that kind of system in place to save on the cost of calls between DC and NYC. It is possible that the WAN link that is carrying the calls between locations is running at capacity and is bouncing. That would account for the sudden dropping of all calls until the link comes back up and calls can flow again.

Either way its an XM issue, not a phone company issue.

Then again, I could be wrong.
