I used to work in publishing, Production to be exact. We were the ones to say we could deliver a book at a certain date regardless of editorial incompitence, author problems, etc. We smiled with confidence to deliver a book on time with shit on out faces. We were blamed for everything.

I'm tired of that. Not that I need it all the time but I want to be praised. I need a new career. Any ideas.

Note: I put this on the board for purely comical reasons. But maybe someone has an idea.

Have you considered maybe something in the exciting world of publishing, perhaps on the production side of things?

Could you, perhaps, find yourself branching out into writing? I'm looking for some fanciful, yet compelling, descriptions of my Urban Sombrero.

hey alice,

just a thought- why not go into business for yourself. there is a local company by me, i'll get you a link if needed, that does small batch, purely digital productions of books. though it would be a decent investment in equipment, i'm sure you'd be better paid and might find it more satisfying.

then again, you have a solid background in the industry, so why not dabble in sales. it will change up your scene, but then again, you'll understand what it takes to fulfill customer expectations. just a thought.

Alice, it sounds to me like you want a complete change of careers; nothing to do with publishing whatsoever.

Why not try something you're passionate about and that you'd truly enjoy? It's obvious you have a great love of animals so perhaps you could give that a whirl. I'm sure the money isn't going to compare favorably to editorial work unless you're a veterinarian, but sometimes personal fulfillment and satisfaction are more important than monetary gains.

I need a Goddam job!

"And you want to be my editor."

I know you tried the corporate world but are there any openings in academia, say editing publications and/or graduate-level theses? You might want to check the websites of local colleges and universities.

Jesus folks. I like to joke around too, but I didn't think Alice would get shit about needing a job.

I'm sorry Alice, I don't really have any advice for ya. You're going to start on the ground floor at any place so just get your resume together to show people that even if it's a different industry, you have a a work ethic and professional experience, then just apply to a place that interests you.

Good luck.

My advice is to stay at your current job until you find something. Being out of work myself its MISERABLE, looking for anything, from data entry to tech work. to really even just working at a store, its very hard.

I'd offer advice, but shit, I'm looking for some myself. =-/

all i can say is good luck

Have you ever thought about becoming a college professor. I know you are not a big fin of children, but by college they are basically adults. Also, the hours are pretty good and there is oppertunity to do other things inside the college.

Maybe you should look into being a corporate trainer. They are the people who learn the new product a software company makes, and then you travel around to client sites and train the people who bought the product.

Go back to school. I did. Just quit my job out of the blue (it was building up, really) and after a few weeks of boredom applied to a few grad programs.

It's amazing how much money you can pull in going to a state school. My tuition was reduced to $25 per semester (serious), and they pay me $4500 per semester to work 13 hours per week for my professor, which usually means reading.

It's not a lot of money in the real world, but getting an income and adding the value of the tuition credit, it's WAY BETTER than working some dumb 9-5 in DC.

Then you get two more years before you have to find a real job again.

Weren't you going to try striking out on your own a while back?

I would say look at Craigslist.org or SimplyHired.com and see if anything there strikes your fancy.

If I ever got tired, I was considering a career in travel and tourism and/or restaurant management.

Shocking. I know.

It depends on your money situation.
I would suggest going back to school and finding your calling there.

I'm in the medical field, so I always encourage people to get into it, if it's for you. There's a few medical technical schools in your regional area for med assistants, ultrasound techs, xray techs, nuc medicine techs, or surg techs.

Good luck!

If you don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career or don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed, maybe you should try kickboxing. It's the sport of the future.

How well does this fuckin' club pay?

No matter what it pays, I'm just to old and tired to join it.

I want to join Missy's cat rescue. I was going to go back to school to become a vet tech. A friend of mine did the same thing. It's a two year degree at a community college. Easy to handle you'd think but she's borderline failing. I couldn't handle the science courses.

Jon, I am on my own. I do freelance proofreading, but the work is drying up. They outsource to India now. Ironic they somehow proofread better than a native speaker.

If I can't join Missy's cat rescue I'd be a puppy wrangler. Puppies to the left of me. Puppies to the right. I'd be happy.

This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where George is trying to figure out what he's good at. "I like horses... it's probably a union job."
