I've been working up at Antietam National Battlefield as an intern for the last year and a half, (hopefully to make working there a career)

Anyway, the Klan wants to come and hold a rally on the field, and as much as I hate it, I guess NPS can't really deny them the right to hold a rally on the field

But its still a GODDAMN SHAME these jackoffs are going to come and defile such a sacred place as Antietam...the National Cemetary there is filled with brave men that DIED on that field putting others above themselves...above hate...against EVERYTHING these scumbags stand for...

And these clowns will probably be outnumbered 3-to-1 by the Media...which is really all they're after....

It just sickens me to see such a beautiful spot that means so much to me personally used in such a manner....

And the fact that these MOTHERFUCKERS are doing this in the name of the Confederate soldier makes me even MORE angry....its a DISGRACE to the memory of my ancestors that these bastards would include them in their evil doctrine....

I actually don't think we landed on the moon, but that's apples to Klan oranges.What can you say to people who were raised in hatred?  Not much, to go against their upbringing is so scary to them they wouldn't even try.  I just look forward to these people getting old and having to go in nursing homes.  There are nothing but Black, Latino and other folks they hate running them.  They're usually very nice as I learned visiting my grandfather during his time in a home, but these old assholes will probably be screaming about their bullshit until the can't talk anymore.  There's just something about an old man sitting in a corner for hours in his own filth that makes me sad, but not when he spent his hole life spreading hate.

I just can't FATHOM the motivation these people have to be so full of hate...

Is it really such a bad thing that someone looks different than they do? Is it really making the world a better place to advocate hatred?

And then compounding it by holding this at Antietam of all places...it just completely boggles my mind....

Actually Sheepie, it was more like three battles in one...there were separate actions on the left, right, and center, all completely independent of the others

If you've never been to the battlefield, I HIGHLY suggest you go...not only is it beautiful out there, but its one of the few battlefields that has not been encroached upon by development at all...if you somehow were able to bring back someone that fought there, it would look exactly the same as it did when the soldiers were there, with only a few minor changes

As much as I disagree with the Klan, the men who fought and died at Antietam were defending a country and a constitution that allowed freedom of expression.  That goes for the South as well as the North.You're absolutely right about the media, but they're free to cover what they want too.

Moe's right...I kinda brushed by it in my original post, I know they have the right to be there, but it still just really galls me nonetheless....

The best I can do is just vent on how much I hate them for doing this...

I'm a huge Civil War buff, and I've been out to Antietam, and I'm slightly inebriated, so I had to just echo what a goddamn shame this is. I know freedom of speech and all that, but the KKK will definitely be desecrating hallowed ground. And even though I support their right to do that, I don't agree with their decision to march there, and I would definitely counterprotest. 
Also to echo what El Mudo said, Antietam is really unique because it's almost completely unspoiled, which is really rare for the Civil War. I was horrified by Franklin (I didn't know it was like that) but I do know that all the battlefields from the siege of Atlanta are completely gone. Gettysburg gets encroached upon by General Pickett's Buffet. Not much is left of the first Bull Run battlefield. 
By the way El Mudo, I need a job, and I'd love to work at Antietam.

People see that, though the Klan still exists, their actual "presence" ends up being a dozen or two morons.The bad thing (as mentioned earlier) is the amount of press coverage it will probably receive. I've been getting more and more fed up with local news teams, in general. I'm sure they won't change the current trend of my opinion of them, when it comes to this particular "event".

This is something that reduces the men who died there to nothing but a background story, and that's the real unspoken crime here

To paraphrase President Lincoln, these men deserve to be remembered, but not as a "oh yeah there was a battle here, but here's a bunch of dopes in white robes who are looking for attention so let's film them"

I would like to go up there and do an assault on the media, but that makes me no better than the people i'm railing about

About 30 people, some in white robes and others in the military-style clothing and swastika armbands of the National Socialist Movement of America, stood next to a farmhouse on the battlefield. Some delivered speeches attacking immigrants, blacks and other minority groups.

About 200 federal, state and local officers watched to ensure peace and to act as a buffer between the Klan and about 30 counter-demonstrators.
