so, i started working with my dad a little over a year ago and there wasnt alot for me to do for a while. and i subscribed to a video game emulator for a year of old nintendo, super nintendo, sega, ps1, atari and gameboy games for a one time payment of $50. as the company began to expand and i took on more responsibilities, i didnt have time for games any more so i deleted the program and didnt think about it ever again.

fast forward to saturday, 2 days ago. i check my acoount and i have $17.63!! what the hell? so i thought maybe i overdrew my account during the week and forgot. so i come to work this morning and get an email saying that my account has been charged for another year subscription to this video game emulator, because it had an automatic renewal thing!!!! godddammit!! and now ive cancel the account and i dont know how to get my money back!!!!

HELP ME!!

I feel for ya man. I've been there, where $50 bucks is life and death. It wasn't so long ago for me.

The best you can do is call them up and complain, saying their policy wasn't clearly stated and whatever else you can think up. That happened to me with some shitty online credit score check thing. It said "Your card will continue to be charged if you keep our service" all over but I called and said I'd never seen that an would never have signed up if I had seen it.

Basically I one of the two months back they had charged me. It's worth a call.

That automatic renewal thing is such a scam! I've been burned, too, and there is
nothing you can do. It is something clearly stated in teeny print at the end of the
contract that no one reads. You can call and complain but they've got your money
and they're keeping it.
My condolences.

Technically they don't have to refund you but if you call up and make enough of a stink, they may give you SOMETHING back. It's worth a call.

shit that happened to me a few months ago with Audible.com. i downloaded a few O&A shows last summer before i bought XM. last month I am looking at my CC and I see 22.00 from Audible. I called and asked whats up and they told me that i "signed up" (yes I just did finger quotes as i typed) for a subscription plan. I got that charge waved but i have no clue how many other times i paid it. yes, i know i am dumb for just paying my CC without looking into, but i work long hours, go to the gym, post on here so i am too busy to do it all the time.
a fool and his money are soon parted.

I have a "visa buxx" card that I use for everything I order online. If I want to buy something, I just "load" the money onto the card and when the seller charges the card, my balance on the card goes back down to near zero. If I forget to cancel an auto-renew account, they will try to charge the card and they will get denied because there is no money on that card. It is a little bit of a pain in the ass but it makes me feel a little safer.

i have inadvertently avoided that problem so far by loosing and/or canceling my card once a year

Did use you a credit card, or a debit card with a Visa/MasterCard logo? If so, call your credit card company and dispute the charge. It may take a few weeks, but you most likely will get your money back.

They give you 30 days to dispute a charge (I've often tried to dispute charges right away, and they told me to WAIT till my next billing statement. So you'd have plenty of time to do so) And vendors wont fuck with the credit card companies, because they'll close their account if they do, and then their customers wont be able to use VISA/MC etc to pay them, and they'd lose too much business if that happened.
