I wear my belt without fail, but I HATE the fact that the government says you have to wear it. Wearing or not wearing a seatbelt does not impact your ability to drive, nor does it pose any threat to other drivers. If you are stupid enough not to wear it just be prepared for the consequences.

IMO the government is really overstepping its boundaries on this issue.

While I think you'd have to be insane to drive without a seat belt, I still don't think it's right that you could get a ticket for choosing to be foolish. You're not endangering anyone but yourself if you drive unbuckled, yet every day I see maniacs talking on their cell phones without headsets and the police are powerless to pull them over. They're putting everyone else on the road at risk with their weaving in and out of lanes and driving 35 mph on the highway.
I wear my seat belt all the time, and I understand why some people would have problems with governments forcing you to wear them. But whenever this comes up I always think of children who don't know any better and parents who are complete retards. A little kid should not be running a car moving at 60 mph. Buckle that damn kid up.
I feel naked without a seat belt. I'm not sure how I feel about laws that require their use, but I do agree with laws to make you buckle your kids. Kids don't have the wisdom and education to make a good decision on their own about seat belts. I also don't think you should be able to be pulled over specifically for not wearing a seat belt. They should only be able to ticket you if you've already been pulled over for something else.

After an accident a few years ago, in which I probably would have been ejected from the car had I not been wearing the belt, I keep it on at all times.

But the government shouldn't force you to wear it. At the same time if you refuse to wear one and expect any municipal or federal money from any injuries sustained, you should be SOL.

In Pa. they would do roadblocks to check and if you had your belt on you got a pack of lifesavers.

In NJ. I approached a toolbooth on my way to work and realised I had to dig in my pocket for change. As I pulled up tho the toll, I undid my seatbelt to pay the tol then put it back onl. Well there was a cop there and he watched me do this and made me pull over and gave me a ticket for not wearing my seatbelt...I went to court to try and fight it and got picked for another 50 bucks for "court costs" (5 min???) It is a cash cow for the Shore Towns.

In some states, the seat belt law (for the driver) gives police the opportunity to pull a vehicle over. Great way to catch some folks with open containers.

I'm with the folks who don't think the government can dictated whether an adult should wear the seatbelt. But I do think the law is a sound one in as far as it pertains to children.

I also think that insurance companies should have the right to reduce benefits to indivduals who sustained injuries as a direct result of their refusal to wear their seat belt. My share of the insurance money pool shouldn't be sucked up by someone who racks up more medical costs because they flew through their window.

The seatbelt law for adults and the helmet law for motorized bikes are equivelant in terms of the government overstepping.

you all say it doesnt hurt anyone else but it doe's

your forced on it to keep the death rates down more people are saved by seatbelts

lower death rate = better insurance

keeping a law on it forces people to learn it

why is it such a bother to you seatbelts arn't uncomfortable

it's like wearing a strap of a book bag

it's not a big deal unless some how they are hard to put on for you like if you missing a arm

you
shouln't be pulled over just for seatbelt but when you do get pulled

I went for years wearing it occaisionally, it was more of a casual thing for me, and then one day I approached a checkpoint and got a ticket for not having my belt on. I was scrambling to put it on, though by that point it was too late. In a way though it was one ticket in hindsight I'm glad I had
to pay. I rarely if ever have driven or rode in a car without a seatbelt on ever again. I'm sure I've done it once or twice though for short distances though it has to be a long time ago at that. I always wear them now.
