View Full Version : I avoid killing bugs,

when I'm walking around outside. I try my hardest not to step on any bugs. I actually feel guilty if I do kill an ant or two, like I killed some bugs mom, dad, or sibling. I feel like I'm in there territory so killing them wouldnt be justified. But if that same bug was in my house I would have no problem murdering that son of a bitch.

I remember when I was a kid there was a huge gathering of ants in front of my house. My grandfather went out there with a blow torch and roasted those poor things. It was the ant version of the holocaust. I felt terrible about it. My grandfather was smiling and laughing. The neighborhood kids gathered around to watch, yet I thought it was awful.

Does anyone share this guilt or am I just a pussy?

I avoid killing "necessary" bugs. Bugs that cause problems get intentionally squished.

I too avoid killing bugs whenever possible. It just doesn't seem "right" or necessary. They must have a reason to be here too, y'know?

Of course there are limits, but I try...

For me, it depends on the insect. If it's a moth or a spider, I pick them up on a piece of paper and let them go. If it's a fly or one of those freaky things with a thousand legs, it's crush city.

I tried desperately to find a pic of those guys in India, that sweep in front of their footsteps, to avoid stepping on bugs. No luck.

i got no problem killing hornets and wasps that are nesting near the house and yard. i also despise the "nest caterpillars". i found out last year that the wasp and hornet spray kills them and it's great because the spraycan has high compression and it can reach up into the trees

i don't mind killing flies or beetles or mosquitos, sand flies, and chiggers

like to leave spiders alone

I won't kill bugs either. Any bug I find in the house I capture a put outside. And if
I'm out after a rainstorm I'll rescue worms off the sidewalk before they start to fry.

I will kill bugs, they are just bugs but I do not go out of my way to try to kill them.

I'll shoo spiders out of my house. If I find a lady bug in one of my flower pots I will leave it alone.

The most *AMAZING* find I ever had was a Preying Mantis outside my old office bldg in NYC (38th and 3rd). A friend asked if I wanted to join her for a cigarette break. We were chatting as she smoked and we wandered toward a siamese pipe. I looked down and saw this green creature. It was a lame Preying Mantis. It was missing a leg. We left it there. I admit, I was concerned. I didn't know if I should call someone (is there a Preying Mantis authority of some kind?!?!). Yeahhh, I did nothing.

I still have no idea how a Preying Mantis found it's way onto a siamese pipe on 38th and 3rd.

But I do remember some fine summer evenings with my dad and our German Shepard after a day of walking in the woods. We'd de-tick Kelly (our dog) and my dad would set the ticks on fire. Simply GLORIOUS.

I love praying mantises! When I was a kid, I would capture them and garden spiders and put the mantises on one bush in the front yard, and the spiders on another. Though one reason I did it, was to watch how they lived, I'll admit I also got joy out of catching grasshoppers and feeding them to them.

Spiders get killed quickly along with flies , however for some reason I will go out of my way to make sure frogs get back to a park or other grassy area.
I try and avoid killing bugs, as long as they do not bite me in any way, then they are done and are gonna be squashed.

i just became a victim of a walkby stinging

Actually about 3 hours ago. i'm trimming hedges today(no shirt on) and as i walked by the large corner bush carrying a garbage barrel i feel it. My first reaction is WTF and reach for where the sting is, as i do that i turn and i see the hornet fly and disappear into the bush.

Now the area is starting to throb, he got me right behind the right shoulder, naturally i'm pissed. Well luckily i got a nice fresh can of Wasp & Hornet spray. I went out and just started dousing the bush and then noticed the large hornet nest about 2 inches inside the edge of the bush. I saw about 5 or 6 go down. I emptied the whole can on that bush.
