correct.

sadly it's mostly gone now. mostly an industrial park used by cablevision. northrop/grumman has a small presence there.

I've always been more of a A10 Warthog fan. Those suckers RULE! They've been trying to mothball them for years, but the pilots won't let them.

No that I know much about this stuff, but I heard the reason they want to get rid of the warthog is because a plane like the F16 can do the job better.
The pilots like them, because you can shoot the crap out of them, lose an engine, and still land the thing. Plus... I've seen the Warthog maneuver. Nothing comes close to doing what they can do.

I saw the F 14 fly at an airshow once in New Jersey. That thing is a monster. It was so loud the sound actually distorted.

ADF wrote:
No that I know much about this stuff, but I heard the reason they want to get rid of the warthog is because a plane like the F16 can do the job better.

Two utterly different planes. The A-10 is made to fly slow and low for ground support, made with simple yet rugged technologies, while the F-16 is a speed machine, flying low and slow will stall it real quick, many of the F-series [the F-104 the most extreme example] were as much rocket as plane, made for high speed/high altitude use.

The warthog is so bad ass, essentially a plane designed around a gun, the pilot sitting in a titanium 'bathtub' it can carry ordinance up the ass, take a shitload of fire and hits and still fly, and that insane gattling gun just sends out a buzzsaw of depleted uranium rounds that just annihilate anything and everything they hit.

This is the F-14 s replacement. The F/A18 Super Hornet. The F/A18 Hornet has been around for some time , I believe since the early 80's. This jet can be a fighter and an attack jet.

It's obviously no fighter but I was at a race once, when a B-1 made a low pass with afterburners, wings swept back and it was extremely extreme. Think almost knocked down by sound. There have been questions about the plane's capabilities. One can debate the value or necessity of the B-1. But for impressive fly-bys? That thing goes to 11.

As for fighters...I was very impressed with the Harrier...for the VTOL and the accompanying wow loud factor. If I'm not mistaken there's to be a version of the Raptor that's VTOL as well. Or at least STOL. Or maybe it's another plane altogether.

For the record, the Warthog made the coolest GI Joe Toy EVER. I always thought the F-16 was big and bulky and not as fun to play around with.
the f16 itself is close to 20 years old. that's to be replaced by the F-22
