I don't know what to do
anymore. The people that live above are so f'ing noisy. Usually its
till 1 in the morning and I just deal with it since I go to bed close
to then. Noisy meaning they stomp around and sometimes vaccuum right
above my bedroom. Lately its been at 7:30 in the morning which I think
is kinda early to be doing that stuff but not early enough to really
complain about. Well now I've been up since 4:30 because they have
been stomping around for a half hour and they vaccuumed or did
something that made a really loud sound like that. I don't know what
the f they are up to and honestly I'm a little scared to go up there
and say something. Who the hell does this? I don't know if I can fall
back asleep and they are still making tons of noise. Something can't
be right w/ these people if they make this much noise constantly over
my bedroom, which is probably where theres is too. I'm afraid I'll go
up there and get stabbed or something. Any suggestions? What should I
do? I was
thinking about banging my ceiling or something but I'm worried the
crazies will come and kick my door in.

*Note: this has been posted by request of someone I know, he got in contact with me this morning about it and wanted to know what other people would do in this situation. I figured this would be a good place to get him some sometimes serious advice.

I've got the same problem with my place. I'm pretty sure the place above me isn't carpeted and if it is, the carpeting is as thin as matzah bread. Condo regs require units to have 80% carpeting in order to reduce noice. As it is, I can hear every step the guy above me makes. When something drops on the floor, it's louder than if it happened in my place. I can hear when he opens drawers and I can even hear when he takes a piss. I've been gutless to say anything about it but my patience is about at an end.

I have been the noisy neighbor upstairs before. The guy came up and explained that he had to get up at 4am (baker) and went to bed at around 7pm. He was a big dick about it, but we did our best to keep it down during those times.
We were an apartment full of teenagers. It was a bit abnoxious.

have a buddy who went through the same thing. the couple upstairs had a newborn and there was activity all the time. he eventually mentioned it to them in a nice way but not much changed so he took the first chance to move to an upstairs apt.

i've been dealing with this same thing for about a year, i live on the 2nd floor of a three story apt building and the new tenants above who moved in about a year ago are the noiseiest mf ers i have ever had to deal with

they blast their radio at obscene levels, i can feel the walls vibrating, and they either have a little kid or a dog that runs around but it sounds like a 500lb bull,

they're constantly arguing at each other and slamming doors, especially the front door which is a heavy metal door that sounds like an atom bomb just went off in the complex when slammed

i complained to the mgmt but they said that there's nothing they can do, i could talk to them about it, or if they're making noise at inappropriate times i could call the cops and make a complaint otherwise im screwed

so at the next available time i will move up one floor to the 3rd so no one is above me anymore, i dont seem to have any problem with the people below, so maybe they're just quiet or the noise doesnt travel up as loud as it does down, so maybe they think they're being quite up there

I could swear the people above me have a large wooden ball that they roll around for some unknown reason on Sunday mornings around 7 am

I had a situation in which I was the upstairs guy, though it wasn't my fault. Apparently, while I was away for a few weeks, someone moved into one of the first floor apartments, and had left numerous notes on my door complaining about noise. The management company had also left some notices and had sent me some certified letters as well. Since it was a Saturday, I immediately went downstairs and talked to the tenant. He claimed he talked to my neighbors, but they blamed me. I showed him my plane tickets and invited him upstairs to show him that my place was carpeted. The other problem with his complaint was that the apartments on his floor were perpendicular to the apartments above (think Jenga) so that his bedroom was underneath my neighbor, not me.

Unfortunately, he never called the management company to explain his confusion over which tenant was causing the noise, and even though I talked to them and faxed them a copy of my plane ticket, they used it against me, refusing to renew my lease a couple of months later. They were trying to force me out anyway because rents in the area had increased far more than the amount they could bump my new lease. They probably got at least another $500/month over what I had been paying.
