Thanks to our wonderful Governor Jon Corzine, New Jersey has begun taxing the puchase of online music and videos. He claims it's to help reduce the state's 4.5 billion dollar defecit. Yeah, right. Like any of that money will go toward the defecit. He'll only increase the spending. It's just opening the door to taxing any and all internet purchases.

Here's the list of all previously untaxed items that are now being taxed here in my lovely Garden State - at the new and improved 7 % rate, of course -

• Downloaded music and video
• Shipping and handling charges
• Flooring and carpeting installation
• Storage space
• Tanning, massage and tattooing
• Data processing
• Limousines
• Health, shopping and other club membership fees
• Parking garages and lots
• Non-clothing cleaning services
• Landscaping
• Magazines and periodicals
• Investigation and security services, such as security alarms and armored cars

Internet taxing already existed. If you buy from an online retailer that has a facility in NJ the retailer was already charging sales tax. If they don't they didn't charge sales tax but you were technically responsible for paying the sales tax on your own even though nobody did and no one was coming after you.
I don't see a problem with taxing any of that stuff other than downloaded music, etc. I don't see how they could enforce a tax on that stuff. Most of that other crap already gets taxed in other states.

One of the fundamental reasons why they haven't taxed many things online is that there are a million ways to get around them. Making the taxes unenforcable, and the Gov't look powerless, which they dont like.

I give this 2 minutes before someone figures out a way around it.
