As some of you know, my wife left for California this morning and won't be back until next Monday.  She's doing some performances out there with the dance company she's in.  That's great for her, but that leaves me....all alone....all week... with the kids.  I love my kids, but damn are kids a lot of work.  I'll be dealing with all meals, bedtimes, school. dance classes, gymnastics, gymboree, playdates and one birthday party.  It would be an understatement to say that I'm feeling a little overwhelmed.  I'm going to take some time off of work this week, but it still won't be easy.  The apartment already looks a little like it's been ransacked.  Oh yeah, and the oldest one has an ear infection.

Well, my advice is to blow off as much of that stuff as you can. Missing one week of Gymboree and gymnastics will not kill the kids. Try to hang at home as much as you can, or do simple things like go for a walk around the block. Designate each night as something different to shake things up, and to give them something to look forward to. Have a movie night (lay blankets down in livingroom and make popcorn or other snacks), a tea party night, a barbie night, make cookies night (1 cup peanut butter, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 egg. In 385 degree oven for about 12 minutes.) etc, etc. Then, TRY to get them to help clean up. Lie and say that you want to have a suprise for Mommy, or make a game out of it. Put up 3 boxes, and see who can fill theirs up first. Something like that. Other than that, have fun!

You have to treat this adventure the same way one kicks heroin, however small differences, instead of porn get as many Barney, Blues Clues,tapes/DVDs whatever the kids are watching these days..TV is your friend!! Don't worry about warm food...Fruit Loops, Cap'n' Crunch, PBJ...all easy food, let the kids tell you....Exorcise, don't worry..no need...Keep a bottle of Rye in the fridge..when you're about to strangle them... have a shot...Clean the place just before the Missus comes home..why do it every twenty minutes..you'll just be tired, don't worry as long as the place looks good and the kids a quiet, when she comes home, you're golden Or rent the kids to Fezzy and hit the ballet (lunchbox)

Items you should always have available:<ol><li>Dimetap (it's GRAPE!)</li><li>Duct Tape</li><li>Velcro</li></ol>I won't go into details on the proper application. It may not stop them, but it will slow them down for a while.  BTW - just watched my sister's three kids and two dogs for a week by myself, so I am speaking from experience.

I have been in your shoes my friend so I know what you're going through.  Some helpful tips:1. Call the Grandparents and see about getting them to take the kids for a few hours or days2. Schedule playdates at other people's homes3. Lots of Disney Channel, Sprout, PBS Kids, Noggin, etc.4. Order in, don't bother cooking.  5. Baths every other nightIf I can think of anything else I'll let you know.  Its the wife's birthday tonight so I'm cooking, cleaning, bathing, etc. so I'm as busy as you.I'll keep a good thought for you.

i forget which daughter it was and when she was a few months old my wife decided to go shopping with my mom and left me alone with my daughter some breastmilk she pumped(my wife that is and man that always looked like it hurt!) but any way the milk ran out and she began to cry. All i remember is clearly staing when my wife got back was" you will NEVER EVER leave me alone with the baby again "   I think Keotok had a lot of good things to suggest!

All good good solid suggestions. Try to have as much fun with the kids as you can because you will be a grandpa probably as quick as I was. Remember don't pass up the opportunity to sleep, pee or eat when you get the chance. Just try to tire them out as much as possible don't giv 'em too much sugar throughout the day

There were some good suggestions posted. I think you will be OK. And just remember when it's time for bed. Give them a nice Vapo or Lavender bath. Put them in nice warm PJ's, read them a story and off to dreamland. "Good night little ones." Then crack open a beer and Ban somebody. That helps me make it through the night.

I feel for you, Mikey. I just did this last week, with the wife down in S.C., I was left by myself to fend off the three year old and five year old. My plan of attack was to keep them busy. Luckily the five year old is in Kindergarten, which took care of every day from 8:30-3:30. A little ice skating, a little playground, some ice cream, toss in some shopping and all of the sudden it was 3 and time to pick up my daughter. After three, its an easy slide into dinner, then the night-time routine- baths, brush teeth, pajamas, reading books, then bed. Before you know it the little fuckers are out cold. 2 IMPORTANT words of advice: 1. Do not let them get bored. When my kids have nothing to do, it takes NO TIME for them to start picking on each other, which ALWAYS ends up with one kid crying, me yelling, and one kid in their room. Once you get into that mode, its really tough to get things calmed down again. 2. If you have a timetable for anything- start WAAAAAYYY early. For example, the bus comes for my daughter at 8:46. We have to be out of the house by 8:38 at the latest to catch it. My daughter is a chronic time waster, so I was all in her shit from 8:00 on. Nothing creates stress like a rabid daddy trying to rush a bunch of un co-operative kids out the door 5 minutes too late- stresses everybody out. Better to let them watch five minutes of TV with their coats and boots on and leave the house relaxed, than the alternative.   Best of luck.

But the good thing is that their screening criteria is now incredibly strict because of this.  Plus, in order to get us to sign up, they throw in free massages for the Dads.  So I got that going for me.
